California is dead last in quality of life in the US.
    #25031252 - 03/01/18 11:19 AM (2 years, 5 months ago)

Here are the rankings as of 2018.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings

https://media.beam.usnews.com/72/92/aae484e24a139c33fd2658193683/171206-best-states-overall-rankings-2018.pdf

Now I know I'm focusing on one aspect and that in other aspcts other states are worse. But it's the most populous and economically important state in the US.

Dead last in quality of life and close to the bottom in several other aspects such as infrastructure, fiscality, affordability...

I've always said that California is a unicorn state filed with contradicting statistics (most millionaires, yet poorest state)

How do you fix this shit???

Now even a lot of minimum wage jobs are being lost due to automation. A McDonalds in my city has tablets you order on now instead of speaking to a person. Grocery stores half the time don't have checkers or baggers and you scan and bag yourself. Once they really perfect driverless cars a whole lot of other people will be out of a job as well.

It's not about liberals. California is goegraphically split in half with liberals or conservatives.

It's a management issue

California is pretty dope. Theres actually a fucking shit ton of jobs, at least where I'm at. Being unemployed in my area means you don't want to be employed. Any level of experience you have and almost any career, a position is available. Definitely an expensive place, but the well paying jobs tend to balance that out. My place is $1800 a month rent and between me and girlfriend we have never had trouble paying the bills, and neither of us have particularly well-paying careers in proportion to the area.

The people I know here who are struggling heavily and/or homeless are all lazy akira_akuma types who don't work just cuz they don't want to. California gets a bad rap. Almost a shining utopia if you know what you're doing. Most people here just don't lol. Califonia is so poverty stricken because no other state is filled with more lazy, socialist, millennial "artist" types who contribute nothing to society and get fucked. Not out of brutality of the living conditions of the state, but because of their own incompetence.

They need to get on Australia's level:
Quote:

Who wants to be a millionaire? Forget the game show and the song titles – the average Australian household now has more than a million dollars in net wealth. The trouble is we are becoming increasingly cash poor.

While the value of our homes has risen to the point where the average household can boast millionaire status – on paper at least – Deloitte Access Economists has found 37 per cent of households are concerned about their ability to pay their bills and household costs. It expects this number to increase to 40 per cent within two years.

Quote:

Despite the fact that consumers are looking for cheaper or better-value groceries, supermarkets are experiencing a new form of competition from an increase in eating out or takeaway food – ordered via a plethora of new apps.

This has become the new luxury, particularly for younger consumers. It has become the trade-off between saving money and saving time – one that has been enabled by technology and the rise of the smartphone.

The smartphone has moved from the luxury to the necessity column – 84 per cent of Australians have one.

Meanwhile, catered food rose 3.3 per cent in 2017 – faster than supermarket growth.

Quote:

Entertainment subscription services is another area that is moving from luxury to essential.

Deloitte found that of the people who subscribe to services such as Netflix and Spotify, if faced with budgetary pressure, more people would first cut back on a car, clothing, holiday or groceries than these subscription services.

California is like near_dylan said; the massive amount of migrants and people coming in out of state in tandem with the succesful people leaving the state - i can see this, but still - that puts us around in the lower 2/3rds, not last by any means.

finally, i have lived in Colorado, Washington, Idaho, and California - and California is the best, easily.  As in it’s sunny in Feburary, and warm out - you can smoke joints walking down the street, most people are chill, lots of amazing music.  Sure, there are tons of downsides that most people overlook and shouldn’t, but thats just kinda life here.  I dont overlook it, actually Ive been thinking about trying to spend more time volunteering at a community education center lately or social support centers in SF to help out.

Hey now, just because is the most boring city of the Northern hemisphere isn't the reason I hate California.

I don't hate California, I've never been. It's just that I feel as if it could be doing so much better. I has a lot of potential, it's just not living up to it.

I lived in California for a few years and it is great, especially NorCal. The traffic situation finally got to me though, there's too many people and too many cars. If you're trying to drive anywhere remotely close to a city be ready to sit in traffic jams. A lot of people do it everyday to and from work. I can't  and won't do it. The sprawl and traffic of California make me sad about the world. The Sierra Nevada has inspired me like no other place. It's a mind fuck.

Much less due to the state itself and how it's governed and more so due to the overwhelming population of dumbfucks that live here. Never have I been to a place with stupider people. Never have I seen heads wedged so far up their own asses.

California is a fantastic place to live due to the weather (and in my case family/friends).

The costs are pretty insane. I have a degree and make right about poverty level income. My wife and I plan to live here our entire lives due to our family/friend network, but we have emptied our retirement accounts to make that happen. Furthermore, I work hand and hand with County/State employees and can tell you without a doubt that the waste is MONUMENTAL. They throw millions and billions of dollars at absolutely worthless projects, and pay idiots way too much money to oversee those failing projects + pensions.

The state spends money like fucking fools and I absolutely blame Libtards for that problem. Jerry Browns Train to Nowhere, all the taxpayer money that they guise as 'Gas Taxes' 'Registration Taxes' - they just spend this money on whatever they want but its sure not going to fixing the roads or improving any kind of usable infrastructure. It is for sure a systemic problem.. Nope lets just add another 10,000 county jobs that pay $150k per year, I dunno have those people make posters and force businesses to put those posters up.

Seriously, Iowa? :lolsy:

Just the simple fact there's topographical variance, trees, and ocean makes California vastly better - all other variables aside.

I watched a episode of game shakers, she called uber or the fictional version of it, and a driverless car shows up, and she gets in the car and the car floors it and is driving out of control and it has no driver and shes sitting in the back with a out of control car. I bet millions of people will die if people are actually brave enough to try and actually trust a driverless cars.

thats one of the reasons why cops will never switch to these new guns that you have to have a electronic bracelet on before the gun will fire, because the cop wont trust that the gun will work when he needs it too, just like how people shouldnt trust a driverless car. yeah, no, but a driverless car is a death trap, and is just asking for trouble.

I guarantee automated cars will be so much safer than human operated cars that it will eventually become illegal for people to drive cars on public roadways.

Caused by other drivers tho, no?

Quote:

A driverless shuttle bus being tested in Las Vegas was involved in a crash an hour into its first day on the job - although it wasn't the vehicle's fault.

The eight-seater vehicle, started as a pilot of Las Vegas' smart city infrastructure, experienced a minor collision after a delivery lorry reversed into it. While the vehicle stopped when it noticed the lorry reversing, it also failed to avoid it.

Several people were inside the vehicle when it was hit.

The incident is the latest in a series of crashes involving driverless vehicles, the vast majority of which have been caused by the other vehicle's driver.

Quote:

Almost all the incidents recorded by Waymo, Google's autonomous vehicle arm, have been down to human drivers hitting the vehicles, and a major crash involving Uber's driverless cars in March was down to the driver of the other car.

While driverless vehicles are seen as safer than humans, at least in fair conditions, they have also been seen as over-cautious and can move in a robotic fashion, meaning human drivers fail to anticipate their movements.

Quote:

A spokesman for the City of Las Vegas said: "The shuttle did what it was supposed to do, in that it’s sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped to avoid the accident.

"Unfortunately the delivery truck did not stop and grazed the front fender of the shuttle. Had the truck had the same sensing equipment that the shuttle has the accident would have been avoided."

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/11/09/driverless-car-involved-crash-first-hour-first-day/
crash in the first hour of the first day in operation

Driverless cars suck because drivers on the road suck
if you have a network of driverless cars that know each other's positions on the road at all times
then the cars can adjust speed and turning simultaneously

human drivers may not be able to read each other's minds
but computerized drivers can :cookiemonster:
:havesomescience:

koods are u kidding bud car companies cant even make regular human driven cars with out all kinds of major fuck ups and recalls. I mean they've been making cars for like a century or something now and we still have cars being produced that are so fucked up ppl die. the first driverless cars surely have to be death traps.

Iowa is has some of the most beautiful places in the country. Minnesota is a post-apocalyptic frozen rust jungle.

It is also extremely competitive to get a job in the urban areas, not to mention low-semi skilled jobs pay shit wages.

I would agree because my quality of life is the same as a fellow Californian, but economically speaking, that just simply isn't how it is for a large portion of people. Low wages in highly dense urban areas, middle class jobs are extremely competitive. Good luck affording a house in southern California unless you are upper middle class or higher.

Everything is money in California.  The only thing that matters.  Silicon Valley buying everything and gentrification of San Fran.  Their is no fix.  Just enjoy the wildfires and massive droughts on the news year after year before this state sinks into the ocean and the earthquakes hit it.

Not a bright future for it.  Enjoy it while you can.

Calling Minnesota and Iowa drastic differences, though Minnesota has many more lakes and amount of forest IIRC. It's the mentality of much of the Midwest, generally "quiet" way of life, that is why the quality of life is so good. Cities/metro areas are easily more accurate. The constantly complaining, discontent with others and life (they have no control over), and young overentitled adults she scores down.

I don't know where the majority of people have a negative view on California

California is pretty broken, but it's probably not broken in the ways you think.

The core problem is just the sheer number of people. That's what causes all the other problems, all down the line.

There are so many people that no one can afford a house, which drives up rent, which puts poor people on the street, and we have so many people that instead of just having a couple of bums here and there, we have populations of literally tens of thousands of homeless in every major city. And we have a bunch of major cities. How do you solve a homelessness problem that numbers potentially in the hundreds of thousands of people? There isn't even enough money to make a dent, even if we devoted the entire state budget to it. Everything is like that.

There are so many people that all of our systems are perpetually underfunded and broken simply due to sheer demand. Everything from education to roads to hospitals, there are simply too many people. We have so many drivers that even freeways with up to 10 lanes each way get clogged bumper to bumper during rush hour. How do you solve such a thing? Build more lanes? Then you'll have to bulldoze a ton of houses to do it, and you'll have to buy so much land at such a high price that even putting a fucking lane in on the freeway becomes unthinkably expensive.

And then you put rich high rollers into neighborhoods with multigenerational abject poverty and low and behold you have a problem with crime and inequality and all sorts of other shit.

My point is, any state with this kind of population would face similar problems.

Also there's a shitton of corruption and inefficiency throughout the state government, because big government. But even if there wasn't, all these other problems would still be around. If california went 100% conservative republican tomorrow, it wouldn't even make a dent in the issues we're facing.

lol can you imagine what a shjthole California would be if conservative republicans ran it. It would be Kansas or Alabama times 100. The only thing keeping us from turning into a third world country is that the rich populated states are run by democrats.

That's a fair prognosis - I feel like a bit of 'chopping up' of the borders of Western States could be highly beneficial in reducing bureaucratic load, waste, and focus.

Southern Oregon and Northern California would make a good union, (Jefferson)

Not sure what do with the rest of Cali though as I'm not as familiar with the southern portions.

It wouldn't even necessarily have to be a 'new state' as so much as subdividing into further semi-autonomous regions would allow for more appropriate appropriations :awesome:
The sheer diversity is what makes it so difficult on top of things.

Iowa and minni soda might have nice scenery but the winters are brutal. No thanks to driving on ice and snow, freezing all the time, having to bundle up like an eskimo when you go out.

Arizona, nevada, texas or florida are much better both in terms of climate and also cost of living. Fewer high paying jobs but rent, food, etc are all much cheaper. No sitting in traffic all day commuting, no freezing in winter plus you have the beach in fl and mountains in nv and az. Also much less pollution and lower taxes

have lived in California for 12 years now. only places i would ever consider would be Oregon or Washington. i find even the liberal leaning of California is too conservative for my tastes.

the largest issues are traffic and crime and every large population has those. i moved out of the "city" to save overhead and have less neighbors, still less then 30 min drive to work and better quality of life (lots of imbred trumpers up here but can't win them all and besides im white so they assume i am one of them)

I was born and raised in Ventura County, Ca. When I was 18 I joined the U.S. Army and traveled a lot of the USA and to Europe. When I came back to Los Angeles, California from Kentucky it was as if I came from a shit hole to paradise. Quality of life over a good portion of America sucks from what I've seen, especially in red states. I'd rather live in a small room in Southern California than a large house in North Dakota or more of this nation. My quality of life here is good. People who don't say weather matters that much aren't saying that as they flee the hurricane or tornado.

Also, one of the only reasons for California being hated is because right wingers got scared during the last election when those 50+ electoral votes came in for Hillary Clinton. Why don't we constantly hear about how people think liberal Connecticut or Rhode Island suck? It's not because those states aren't as or more liberal than California, it's because California is used for propaganda purposes for partisan politics.

After visiting New York for the 2nd time and probably planning a 3rd trip in two months to live for a temporary transitional job (long story) my assessments are this of the 4 major metropolitan states

California - i dont know. Never been to La or San Fran for more then a few days. I must admit i have never been anywhere with higher price combinations though. Seems ridiculous. What all do you get out of that?

Texas - i spent quite some time in Texas over the last few years and it is hands down the best place to land a job if you have just finished an education. Most people who finished school there have no issue landing a high quality job right away. Texas has a very advanced highway system but LOL being such a big state who wants to drive that all the time anyway.

Historically to me Texas has a dark industrial history and the capital town there seems to be a living symbol of rebellion against the rest of the state. Austin is awesome filled with parks and happy people walking their dogs and tons of musicians but the affordability in the rest of Texas is not found there. Otherwise in Houston gasoline is so cheap its still like $1.80 a gallon or maybe not anymore but when I was there last definitely. Food is really cheap at the store. State has a huge past of racism and it has come a long long long ways since then. I still am careful to observe a very ancient mind state of farmers who never wanted anyone on their farms but family. Farms there are beautiful and so huge one farm is like an entire city. Lol still I would stick to the cities.

Florida - well what can I say I have lived here over half my life. Really spread out state. Super fucking tropical filled with beaches and palm trees and lots and lots of drugs. Lots of culture, tons of south Americans. Good place to retire. Kind of a bad place to start out. Always has been. You can find really cheap as fuck property here but it will be hours away from anything you consider useful. Otherwise expect the land to go up in considerate dollar value. Dammit though its beautiful i will probably be here the rest of my life. If you come here come with your entire family and all your friends i wouldnt just show up here by myself. Its a magnetic state. Which has benefits. And downsides.

New York - well damn. I just went the first time a month ago. Been twice now. So yeah its another state like Florida just magnetic its best to come with everyone you know. Lots of culture. I went by myself. I took a train upstate from grand central and passed mount vernon and new rochelle and larchmont and even visited new england in connecticut. Upstate is very rural. The city of New York its like you cant breath without someones lungs in your lungs. Nowhere to park in Manhattan. I wouldn't want to be in most of queens at night based on the ancient midevil housing projects i have seen. So expensive i mean god damn you get the price then you get the tax. So what kind of moron would waste his money coming here to the previous mafia capitol of the world and waste time on education and paying $2500 for a one bedroom less then 500 sf by central park?

Lol someone like me if I had the money. New York seems to have some kind of parent son relationship with Miami. While Miami is the much more tropical beautiful house filled version of that city its almost like New York said "we are putting you here Miami and making you internation as shit just like your dad Ny"

Many Miami people may disagree but clearly Miami is not southern like Atlanta its a much more Cuban influenced city but more of a northeast city in the south. Is New York full of shit like "no fucking way" all the time? Yeah so what are you paying for right?.....

Why live in a huge city that is just buildings on top of buildings? What do you pay for? Real estate. Not worth it. Food? Its great but so what? Parking? Fuck is there any on the island? Cars only drop off or pick up. This to me is what you pay for. You pay for a place where you could practically get fired 3 times and rehired 3 times in the same day. Its fast. Damn its fast.

Also all the rumors that people dont talk to you there? Bullshit. Everyone talks to you. You have to get in their face. You really have to get in their face. Hard. Once you do they dont shut up. Once you get someones attention there and start meeting people you find yourself in a cement world of enlightened people. There are fuck ups there of course but the locals hate those people. The locals want the tourists they spend money and enroll in schools and fill up the parks and streets and people there trade lives like text messages.

Its intense as fuck but a smart New Yorker knows what they want. The women there even live in some level where they walk around in groups and people get the fuck out of their way. Is feminism even an issue there? It doesn't seem like it. Once you start respecting people they start respecting you. Knowing people there is almost like joining a cult. "One of us one of us one of us"

So why not fucking join it? Once you gain the city as a friend everyone is like "good morning good night" all that shit. This is what you are paying for. A social experience. Now that many people in your face does give you kind of an adrenaline rush so obviously don't take my advice go see for yourself I am not saying its an easy undangerous place to be.

Just for the record though the whole "people won't talk to you thing" isn't real. Damn there are a lot of people there i mean a day there takes the intensity of a week in most places. So much will have happened in one day its exhausting. I talked to so many people though it was like meet a person go somewhere else meet a person go somewhere else meet a person go somewhere else. Your directness and integrity will be your best friend there.

Well, thats the best I have.

Now compare mine to yours stories and experience that is.

The point to meditating is to feel the same when you are meditation as when you aren't. To be balanced inside and out. Difficult to do when being aware of breath and sensation. However, not impossible. Feeling ok about yourself at all times seems to be a great difficult skill to master. The concept so simple a snail could understand it. To practice it some of the greatest Albert Einstein type minds couldn't master it.

It's like the trick to human problems is to be even more human. Not less human but as human as possible, only understanding human nature.

Understanding subtleties is hard. What is subtle? Subtle is powerful. Atoms are subtle. Atoms make up everything we are. Understanding subtleties is one of the hardest parts of life.

Lol you listed the cons but what are the pros?

That's a fair prognosis - I feel like a bit of 'chopping up' of the borders of Western States could be highly beneficial in reducing bureaucratic load, waste, and focus.

Southern Oregon and Northern California would make a good union, (Jefferson)

Not sure what do with the rest of Cali though as I'm not as familiar with the southern portions.

It wouldn't even necessarily have to be a 'new state' as so much as subdividing into further semi-autonomous regions would allow for more appropriate appropriations :awesome:
The sheer diversity is what makes it so difficult on top of things.

But still keep the 50 stars? Imagine how many flags will have to junked and new ones made. Actually that could help stimulate the economy in some minor way I suppose.

People in the Northwest have been talking about Cascadia for years now. I think I would have to move farther inland if something like that ever happened (which it won't, thank God).

SF Bay Area. It's not really all bad. But the things I don't like (sprawl, housing prices, traffic, crowding) are exacerbated by a growing population.

So might as well tell everybody it's a shithole!

Truth be told there are areas to the north that I would rather live in, but familial obligations have me stuck here for now. So I try to make the best of it.

Wow, you didn't even mention smog.  Tell it to the earlier poster that looks at it like Disneyland and a fairytale.  A lot like many foreign people think Hollywood is this amazing place then they see it for what it is.

Really? I just went to the beach today for an hour. I had a great time. Where do you live? Why would I rather live where you are right now than having gone to the beach today? Also I went to UCSB for 4 years. Does this look like a complete shithole to you? -

If so what is better a place in your opinion?

Not all of California has a smog problem. I live just north of Los Angeles and the air quality if fine. I just went to the beach today. Here's a photo I posted on facebook -

A lot of the hate for California stems from right wing politics because they freaked out when those 50+ electoral votes came in for Hillary Clinton during the Presidential Election. Then to top it off the Russians have been doing a blitz on California with their propaganda bots. Here's some articles on it -

I laugh to myself often when I'm outside walking and it's the most beautiful night you ever seen in your life. What I laugh to myself is all those people who think this places sucks. They're to ignorant it's just funny to me. They're sitting somewhere in a room on the internet where it's covered in snow outside or extremely hot and uncomfortable, and they're telling me where I live sucks. It's so funny.

California contains beautiful landscapes containing therein little splotches of insufferable peoplescapes. And the riff raff element of the cityscapes has been festering at an ungodly clip under democrat commie-leaning governance over decades. #NotAllCalifornians #NotEveryPlaceInEveryCity #NoShitSherlock

Most places are like that in the USA. You have the parts of town that are either good or bad depending on your socioeconomic status.

California is the best place I have ever lived in the US and I've lived in over 14 different states.
There's lots of problems for sure.. cost of living is crazy, dumbass people fucking everywhere, traffic is insane.. lots of homeless.. laws are restrictive, libtards running the state, but it's still fucking awesome.
Been here 9 or 10 years now and we don't want to move, we love where we live so much. I've never had better opportunities and my career and life took off from here and I moved here homeless. Standard of living is high.
The main problem is the sheer amount of people. There's just too goddamn many people. Most are dumb.

There is no major smog problem in LA area anymore, it's not the 90s. California has the strictest emissions regulations in the US.
While there's still air pollution, it's a massive fucking metro city area and it's waay better than it used to be. I live just south of LA and the air quality is great here. And Mediterranean climate
Clear skies every day, the most beautiful beaches in the US (imo) and the most diversity of geography and climate of any state. Lots of cool people. And a whole lot of idiots.

I love this state. Dad and Mom grew up in New Jersey. I love NJ.

I grew up on the central coast of california, near monterey bay.  Had a nice childhood, its a beautiful state.  Fuck southern california, that place is shit.    However at 18 I moved to arizona because there was no way I was ever ever ever going to be able to afford to start a career in I.T. in the silicon valley, even only living an hour away from it.  California is a shit show with their state management, taxes, infrastructure and a fuck ton of other shit.

I do miss the natural beauty it has, and now that my parents left there and moved to Oregon near the cali border I do want to move closer to them as they are getting older, but the places I'd like to live are not so good for technical people like me to have a career.  The only affordable places are out in the sticks, which would be fine with me if I can score a stable work from home position with good pay.

The costs are just too high in that state over all.  The places that are even remotely affordable by your average middle income person are a lot worse then people think.  If you go to a place like Fresno or bakerfield you will see what a meth addled gang land that mixes in just enough white trailer trash to be diverse looks like.

That made me laugh.  My brother got into bitcoins when those in the know before corporate greed and banks took over he lost a hell of a lot of money.  So now he is pissed.  Working that much and losing it like placing a large wager on a bet.

Everything evolves and he was one step behind instead of forward.

I really don't get the elitism people in the north have against southern California. It's not like that the other way around. NoCal people just LOVE to shit on SoCal for some reason.
That attitude is especially prevalent in the Bay area. I never really heard a single bad thing about the bay area the whole time I lived in LA (~4 years)..
I spent a couple days in San Fran and heard MAD shit talked on SoCal.. even just in passing or people on the street.

He's in Arizona.. the land of melting dashboards and shoes, and people that drive 25MPH across all 5 lanes of highway when the speed limit is 55.
And bikers who ride in the middle of the street when they have an entire dedicated bike lane that a truck could drive through.

Most people in socal aren’t the liberal types. I wouldn’t call them conservatives either. People here just don’t have the time to be worried about other people. It’s really a small group who are advocating for shit. The city I live in you can be who ever you’d like nobody gives a shit. maybe California is dead last on the list cause most people in California are lower middle class if not poor. That doesn’t mean people are living a bad quality of life.

Obviously I'm generalizing.  A lot of SoCal, especially around LA, is a shit hole.  Its been spreading farther and farther up north too.  The peoples attitude in general down there is different.  Like how New York is different.  Part of why the area I grew up in is now trash is because its become a lot like L.A.  A lot of northern California used to be laid back and friendly.  Of course this doesn't apply everywhere.  Oakland has been a gang ridden shit hole for a long long time.  Also the silicon valley and bay area doesn't have room to really talk.  They are a shithole in a different sort of way.  So very true they are elitist as fuck there.

It used to be california was a laid back kind of state and people were a lot friendlier.  Seems the more and more people move to an area, the less friendly they become and it turns into some sort of standard to be an asshole.  There are definitely some cultural issues going on in california as well, add that to the insane cost of living and mismanagement of the state and it creates a ton of socio-economic situations that fucks things up even more.

I think you have the speed limit thing backwards, unless you are talking about Sun City, the land of retireeeeeees and scooters.

Our insurance rates are the second highest in the nation because people here drive too fast (and also because of all the stolen cars getting chop shopped) and get into deadly accidents.

Our shoes and dashboards do melt.  Like memes and steel beams.

I think California used to be friendly because of the older generation. The younger generations are being more rude in general. The amount of disrespect I've been shown at work places by them is unimaginable. I rented a room next to a garage in a neighborhood where the homes are $700,000+. It's middle class but some days I feel it might as well be a trailer park. Most of the homes were built around the 1950s too.

My neighbors have been complete assholes. I was working from 4PM to 12AM and couldn't go to sleep until 3AM. So I asked my landlord to be do their laundry in the afternoon because the washer made a loud screaming noise and it's right next to the wall near my bed. Their garage door opener was an old system and it was loud. So I would be awaken by it. They kept driving their car in and out the garage while I tried to sleep. Then they would use the garage door instead of their side gate to go in and out the house.

Her husband is a divorce lawyer. He's a BMW car owner. His BMW was quiet, thankfully. After a few years they upgraded the garage door opener and the new one was quiet enough to where it wouldn't disturb me as much. Then right after they replaced the garage door opener her husband buys a brand new BMW M5 which has the muffler wired to the stereo system to make it sound like a V8 engine. I complained to the landlord and she said I can move out if I don't like.

Then right next to my room next door a high school teacher lives there. She allowed a friend to move in and her friend brought a dog with her. This is one of the most annoying dogs I've ever seen in my life. It will bark at air planes and any little thing. I complained to her and she didn't do anything about it. I had the county send her a letter telling her she's violating the barking dog noise ordinance. She still refuses to do anything and if I want to make it stop I have to take her to court.

It's ridiculous the way these so called "upper middle class" people behave. If anything what happened is most of them weren't upper class at all. They bought houses cheap back before the 1980s and the prices kept going up. Now they're all living in expensive and acting all snobby. The level of narcissism around where I live in California is through the roof.

Here's the neighbors dog that's 15ft away from my room barking for 8 hrs straight some days while the owner is at school teaching classes.

I think you have the speed limit thing backwards, unless you are talking about Sun City, the land of retireeeeeees and scooters.

Our insurance rates are the second highest in the nation because people here drive too fast (and also because of all the stolen cars getting chop shopped) and get into deadly accidents.

Can you explain to me jackets in Arizona?

Few decades ago, was in Phoenix and Mesa area for the winter
people were wearing hats, mitts, and winter hockey jackets
was personally wearing t-shirts and shorts because of the heat
the hockey jackets locals were wearing were the same sort we wore in Canada to keep warm in the winter

the actual temperature was that of a warm spring day (in the 20s -- 72ish in American measure)

is it something to do with body temperature getting used to a particular climate
or are hockey fans in Arizona just completely crazy and bake themselves all winter?

I didn't read this thread, but I always get a chuckle from the California haters.  Maybe one of these days they'll hate us enough to kick us out into the briar patch.

Hahah the desert gets colder then people seem to think elsewhere.  Deserts tend to be extreme both directions on the temp scale.  Our summers are usually 115F and winters can drop below freezing at night, we just don't have any moisture in the air to make snow, though it HAS snowed in phoenix before.

Definitely people adjust to it.  Not everyone, as I surely haven't.  A lot of people keep their places air conditioned @ 80 to 85 in the summer to save on electric costs. That to me is miserable.  I'll gladly pay extra to have my place at 70 or below.  68 if I'm sleeping.  Every girlfriend I've ever had since moving here and most every woman I've ever met complains if its under 75 or 80 it seems about being cold.  So you're probably seeing that.

Wearing that stuff you mentioned at 70 definitely seems extreme to me and I don't commonly see people doing that.  Usually if its 70+ people are wearing shirts and jeans or at most a sweater or something.

Well, we definitely have our fair share of crazy people here as well.  I have met a few who I swear would wear a deep winter coat in the middle of summer if they thought they could get away with it without the rest of us calling them nutbags. haha

haha.. I was mostly joking :tongue2:
But last 3 times I was in PHX... everyone was driving slow as fuckballs. Shit, as soon as you hit Arizona.
The 2 lane road in.. you can cruise at like 90. All passing cars on the left, slow cars on the right. Street signs say that all throughout California. SLOW MOTHERFUCKERS TO THE RIGHT LANE
And it works. Fast cars go on the left, slow MFers move to the right side. Traffic flows freely
Second you hit Arizona, those signs disappear. Then the retard fucks with AZ plates camp the left lane doing 45 MPH while pacing the car next to them for 50 miles so no one can get by.

I swear it's happened every single time I drive there. I'm free cruising and as soon as I hit AZ, there's always some retard who thinks it's funny to go 25MPH under the speed limit in the left lane and pace the car next to them and refuse to move over. Doesn't matter what time of day, it was 2AM-3AM. They can not have a single car in front of them for 5 miles, but they will still do that. I've been stuck behind someone like that for over 50 miles.

Then when you actually get in AZ, everyone was doing the same thing. Driving the main highway and I'm used to doing 80-90 on the highway to "cruise".. these guys idea of cruising is doing 45MPH and forming a chain of cars evenly going the same speed across all 6 lanes of traffic so no one can get by. I should have saved my dashcam footage of it. Coming in there was a line of 6 cars all PERFECTLY across all 6 lanes of traffic, going the exact same speed.. like that for miles and miles... they were all going slow as fuck and had no one in front of them for miles.
That's an Arizona thing from my experience. Assholes who want to drive super slow and camp  the left lanes for no fucking reason and refuse to move over.  And people that like to block all lanes of a road when there is no one in front of them. I mean it happens here too sometimes, but down there it's like clockwork. Most people here know when you are camping the left lane and a car comes flying up behind you and you have room to move, you move the fuck over. Not in AZ. They get some kind of sick satisfaction out it.

Perhaps we are driving different roads. But almost all my driving experiences in PHX area and coming to it are infuriating as hell because of all these slow ass fucks that block the free flow of traffic, even when there is zero traffic.

California also has some of the most draconian enforcement BS on this side of the Mississippi. Illegal DUI checkpoints, EPA goons harassing land owners, State park rangers shaking visitors down, the list is endless.

NYC has it's share of overzealous enforcement as well. Same shit different way.

Smoke indoors? Get fined for smoking indoors.
Smoke outside? Get fined for loitering.
While the fat cats collect big time tax revenue on the cigarettes you're not supposed to smoke. They get you coming and going. Cha-ching.

This thread reminds me of that South Park episode, where cartmen is driving in a car and singing a song on a loud speaker singing, “California, is real nice to the homeless, oh Cali—eeeee—-fornia a a a , real nice to the homeless” and homeless people were following him as he was leading them to California. He was doing it because he wanted homeless people out of his state, which is Colorado is where South Park is in.

Relative to population..? Parts of MO, OK, KS, and most of the Plains as a whole seem way more likely to run into  Draconian / illegal "enforcement" particularly for out of state drivers. Down to cops cruising >90mph on the 75mph interstates in the fast lane on slow days, especially turnpikes , speeding up to park and  pull over people in the right lane cruising at 90. A quick $375/>15mph over speeding ticket. Unwarranted sobriety tests on nervous drivers, leading to a blood test. No front license plates when driving through a state  which requires them (and from/to a state that doesn't).

I've never been stopped/frisked in CA or OR - in nearly a decade. Idaho, on the other hand, it's happened like 15+ times.... just driving around past midnight or 3mph above speed limit is probable cause there... and they'll attempt to intimidate you with lies about 'calling the dogs' until you let them search your car, some stops will last over an hour as they relentlessly try to get you to give up your rights.

I've never consented to a search.  My car has been searched many times.  I've been dragged out of the house at the address listed on my driver's license at gunpoint, handcuffed and threatened with arrest.  When I was a teenager, it was a foregone conclusion that if a cop got in behind a car full of kids on Fri night, we would be getting pulled over.  I've never had the cops put me in handcuffs without hurting me in some way, at least a little, to show me that they can.
Bear in mind, that I'm very friendly with police.  When I got my DUI years ago, I asked the arresting officer out for dinner.(she politely declined)  I never argue or talk shit.  I would hate to see what would happen if I did.

tl;dr
I haven't dealt with a lot of out of state cops, but the local sheriff and PD are dicks around this part of Ca.  I can't imagine that Idaho cops could be that much worse.  Our PD had to operate for a decade under a federal consent decree.

All the same, I would never move to some parking lot state as long as I can live in California.  That would be absurd.

I think it's safe to say that horrible people work at most if not all departments. Bigger cities in my experience means seemingly more are better/worried about bigger/real problems. I think it's also safe to say that the relative amount of members here who've suffered unjust law enforcement, is exponentially higher than the norm. I've been slammed against a wall by a jail guard over twice my weight for saying "What?" in my own town. The jail is considered far more humane than most in the area. I  genuinely couldn't hear well enough or understand anything, as my ears were ringing so loud and brain "zapping" profusely from delirium tremens setting in. I had at least one seizure within 24hrs of it. I couldn't find or afford a lawyer to do anything afterwards.

Ventura County has been pretty good in regards to the police. I've never had any trouble with them pulling me over or anything. When I was living in Isla Vista in Santa Barbara County is when I got got in trouble. I was a designated driver and a cop hiding in an alley pulled me over for rolling a stop sign around midnight. They asked to search my car and I said no, then they gave me a ticket and left. Isla Vista had a lot of outside police contracted to do the police work for the city. They didn't care about community policing as much. If you get contract agency or sheriff you'll probably have more problems.

The overall happiness is not necessarily material accessability;the happiest people (and companies) I've ever met live or are from "the middle of nowhere" A big part of it is the general way of life/moral, and plenty of people love the lakes and forests of Minnesota. So many in the PNW that love to hike seem to overlook and forget that much of the U.S. has places just like it; Yellowstone is not the only gem. Hell, look at Montana for a "hidden" (overlooked) one, all of the different landscapes are favored by someone. From barrenness,  like "the wave" in Arizona, to the lushest forest. The seemingly genuinely, happiest people I've ever met live in a town of ~500. It was where the peak totality of last year's eclipse was. A shop at the local "Rainmaker Art Studio" (1) downtown, with other stores like "Makanda Trading Co" (2,3, 4)-

(Just one section of inside)

Most houses have a lot of acreage-

It is in and adjacent to beautiful areas like The Garden of the Gods (1,2), and Giant City State Park (3,4). There are many undocumented lakes among different houses/properties, and the oldest wildlife in the country-

I do think a genuine connection to nature is key to happiness. That's why even though I made very little money before I was still happy. I go for a walk every day and connect with nature. California has a lot of nature to connect with.
