Video Tek DVD

Alright, I think I've gathered a little support for my idea in the RR DVD thread.  My idea's basically as follows.

Get a group of experienced, knowledgable members--preferably the majority will be trusted cultivators--who are willing to record in whatever quality they wish (studio cameras, digital cameras or web-cams, whatever you have) a variety of the most popular, tried and true, tested and approved teks they use for the various stages of growth.  I would take these Teks and assort them, edit, shorten if necessary, etc. the clips, throw some menus in and all that and come out with a cheap (yes, low-quality, but efficient) "How to..."/"documentary" collaboration for all the stages of mushroom cultivation.

For a QUICK example, the main menu might be:

Terminology      //This would give a visual of the term and a quick, basic audio description of what the term/object/etc. is used for.
The PF Tek (For beginners)
Grain Teks
Bulk Substrate Teks
Casing Teks
Fruiting Chamber Teks

You get the idea...

Then, on some, there would be various chapters (or even one sub menu.)  For example, the Fruiting Chamber Teks could go to a sub-menu.)

|_Shotgun Terrariums
|_Monotubs
|_Martha Closets
|_Greenhouses


And, again, you get the idea.  Right now, the following people are on board:
1) PsychOfMSE
2) ScavengerType
3) 13shrooms
4) ShadowSpore

Yes, I'm aware none of these people are trusted cultivators, but they've got the desire to help and have a decent amount of experience.  Is anyone else (again, preferably a few of you TCs) interested in helping with this project?

Note:  I'll take care of the editting.  And, the profits (with the exception of maybe the cost of CD/DVDs to burn on, if we go that route) will go to RR to 1) Help the family of one of the biggest influences on this site and 2) Attempt to make up for some of the pirating of his video.

I can't get a video camera for a while. I do know how to use some video editing software though and I also have a decent mic with an effects pedal that can make my or anyone's voice sound like a demon. Until I get my video camera in March-May all I could make is videos based on pictures with a (satanic?) voice over. Sorry if I gave you the impression that I had a video camera right now I believe I explicitly mentioned that I don't in the thread.

then ask if he wants to add his videos
to everyone elses
if not,
im sure theres TONS of members here that can make a video and put it on u-tube
but if we ALL do that and put it in one thread,I dont see why it wouldnt work
that way noobs will have a place to look.
with all the updated info and teks that are working NOW
not years ago,most of those teks are outdated
so lets keep the working teks going

theres posts up top for noobs and they still ask the questions. theres the similar threads that are given when they are tring to post a question and they don't read em. would be nice when everythings cleaned up and updated for current. maybe a basic test u have to pass before u can post in the forums like the info is provided and then a lil test if u miss so many u hae to read it again. hell I'd take the test just to see what I'm ill informed of ya know...

I agree totally. However, this forum isn't for the experienced growers, because they already know the ropes.  It's for the new growers who are just starting out.  Sometimes the hardest part about learning something new is un-learning bad info.  That's why I tend to correct people for calling a substrate tray a 'casing', etc.

if you think that making a video would have been appropriate pre-RR thread, then you may as well i guess.

in terms of presentation of knowledge, i think that this board is far beyond sufficient in its comprehensiveness to assist anyone interested in cultivating mushrooms to reaching whatever goals they set.  i think that the essentials of a video like RRs are perfect for getting starting and acquainted with procedures and concepts, but its the dialogue and constant innovation/critique/perpetual enthusiasm that makes this board perhaps more valuable than any video could be, even in like, virtual reality and shit.

the point is, no video is going to make anyone a badass.  we all know that its the energy created by the community that perpetuates utter badassitude.

if you want to give RR some money, i'm sure paypal fees are lower than operating costs on producing a video that might be awesome, but still won't recreate the functioning community that you know made you supreme shroom shaman, or bring anyone closer to it than the already awesome dvd that exists, and would be even more diminished in 'market value' once your version got on piratebay too.

This isn't a "I am for it" or "I am against it" post, just my general thoughts on the matter.

I don't see why it would be disrespectful. What you say is like saying "There's already a book out on the subject of physics. How dare anyone write another one?!". You see, this is not to be confused with RR's DVDs, which are a professional product. What's suggested here is a community project by a few enthusiasts. I am quite certain that there still might be additional information on the subject of growing mushrooms that members of this board might be interested in, but which are not sufficiently covered (or approached differently) on RR's DVDs. IMHO, the ones that are buying RR's videos now would still do so even if this community project ever comes out and the ones who are downloading RR's videos illegally are a lost cause anyways.

My point is, I bought "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Stametz. Why would I? All the information is available at this community project called The Shroomery, no? I still did, though. I've read it. But I have never used it as a source of information for growing mushrooms so far. It all comes from here.
And without wanting to be disrespectful towards RR in any way, there are also others who have a wealth of knowledge and something to say on the subject of cultivating mushrooms.

As soon as it becomes accepted that there's only one person who speaks the irrevocable truth then it starts to become a cult and I don't do cults. RR is an icon of mushroom cultivation, we all know that. But that doesn't mean anyone needs to ask his approval if they want to make a DVD themselves as long as it doesn't compete with RR's, which I don't think it ever will.
There are more crafty teks out there than one single person can ever fit on a few DVDs in a lifetime and RR doesn't hold a copyright on all of them. Personally, I'd like to see more about the supporting teks, like Shroomzey's construction of a grow room, greenhouse automation, materials and their alternatives, etc., etc. with a mention of the sources to buy various equipment, not just another "PF-Tek howto".

See, that's exactly what I mean. A DVD to compliment RR's, not one to compete with it. Like I said, one part of it could be FC building teks, complete with costs for the materials and their sources.

1)  Yea, you're right.  The board is sufficient with info.  It's also suffiecient with every person who managed to grow a single mushroom tryin to give advice on every situation they come across, even ones they have no knowledge (firsthand or otherwise) of as if they were a seasoned mycologist and schooled RR in the first place.  That's what the video's about.  Getting the experienced cultivators together to show what can be done.
2)  Yes, his video is perfect for getting started.  His video is also just *one* *way* of starting.  What about the people who want to do agar work, but don't have an already perfectly working flowhood?  Where in his video does he BRF Agar tek (whatever it's real name is ^_^).  Where does he mention Marthas, monotubs, how many substrate/spawn/casing mixtures does he mention?  Like I said in another post, his video is amazing, but shows only one avenue to reach a final destination.  It's just like if you and I and the rest of the shroomery members decided to take a trip to Mexico.  Believe it or not, you all wouldn't have to follow my EXACT path to reach it.  There are 101 routes to get their, and some that are acceptable for you may be out of the realm of possibilities for me.
3)  This video isn't intended to turn you into the prodigal son of Roger Rabbit and Roadkill.  It's intended to be a visual and audible aid that gathers the best information from this community, takes it out of the bullshit, misinforming and outdated information and puts it in a single location.

4)  Yea, if we do it, they'll pirate it.  I could make a web-cam video of myself tryin to bend myself in half and suck myself off and you're guaranteed that someone, SOMEWHERE would try to pirate that, too.  The thing I'm doing is this.
  a) The above points.
  b) Making up for a portion of the funds RR lost through pirating.
  c) Helping interested people in learning the hows and whys.
  d) Even if they pirate it, we'll be making new videos constantly (new teks, methods, additions, fixes, etc.).  This'll mean they have to pirate each time to get the whole shabang.
  e) Even if they pirate it, it's a *very* low-cost operation, meaning we're not out of much money at all.  lol, seriously, the people who agree to this know what's gonna happen.  That's why we're not gonna spend much, if any money on it.

To the person who mentioned RR bein on board for this...  Why?  To be honest, why should it be required that he be on board for a little movie that's not produced by him, not showing him (unless he, by his own initiative, specifically says he's interested) and that's not competing with his video, whatsoever?  The only way he'll be remotely involved unless he chooses to do more is receiving the profits from the videos, which all of the people in the project are completely aware and okay with.

If people feel better, we'll see what RR things about it, I just don't see how it's disrespectful or invasive to do this without his preapproval.

I agree. Some people don't want donations and like to leave private matters...well private. I know some find that hard to believe, but its true. I'd say just ask him if he wants donations or if he wants any sort of his private life exposed. He hasn't asked for any sort of donations making me think he might not want it. If he says no, well then just continue on with your project if you'd like. You could also raise money for another charitable cause. I'd say if you went that route you  might want to only grow edibles if you get my drift (or just donate the money anonymously). I post on another Message board where people donate and raise 20,000-25,000 to a child's terminally ill foundation each christmas (people get other message boards to help), but considering the nature of this board you might not want to leak this out too far into the internet. It could bring unwanted attention.

If you really wanted to get the ball rolling you might want to PM a mod and see if they'll grant this thread a sticky.

To the Original OP
you should go ask RR if he wants you to make a video growing illegals and selling it in his name.
Unless he has given you his permission to keep using his name as the cause of this project, you might want to stop trying to associate him with it.
BTW, I think its a great idea to do video teks posted for free on this site.

Sure. I'll have to think of a subject. But I've built pretty much everything I use from incubator to automated greenhouse myself (minus the timers and fogger, obviously) and since it's working well I am sure I have something I could contribute. I do have a digital camcorder, too.
