there were tons of these in a bermuda lawn were I found only like 2 weilii.I kept reaching down grabbing these because they somewhat resemble weilii from top. These dont have the smooth slimey top like weilii theyre more like a felt texture on the cap and the gills are usually darker. These things are everywhere ive found them lots before.Anyone know what these are? Thanks.

Good question!
I found hundreds of those babies, and one weilii... or so i hope.
wonder what they are... have kind of a hairy, heavy, thick cap? A few of them i found werent showing gills yet, but were covered with a tough veil.. tough enough to not rip with my handling.
good picts

Jahfeelirie, those arent the same ones you found mainly cause they dont have a veil, and well they dont appear to be hairy on the cap.
Smooth420: unless someone on the boards here is familiar with this species (which is very possible), it will be very hard to ID without any other information. Whast he spore print? Any bruising?
They appear to be some sort of Panaeolus species. If the spore print is dark brown/black this could be a possibility.

The ones I found looked like the smallest one in the first picture. They had tough veils and stayed around that sized. They had dark gills and... perhaps not HAIRY caps, but rough textured.
If this is some sort of Pan species, is it a possibility that they could be active?

Definitely velvety Psathrellas (Psathrella velutina) they are out in full force right now. They are the most common mushroom I have seen people mistake weilii for, my friends bring me bags full of these all the time for ID. I always tell them if they see these mushrooms weilii are probably near, its been my observation that velveties and weilii commonly grow side by side, they also grow with the new species I found. Velvets won't grow in too new of neighborshoods, they have the same fruiting pattern of weilii preferring 3yr and older neighborhoods which makes them great indicators telling you if a neighborhood is old enough. Velvets will also grow in older subdivisions as well though, so they can only be used to tell if a neighborhood is old enough, not if its too old, but older neighborhoods are generally obvious in appearance anyways.
BTW: weilii is still up and fruitng fairly strong, I found 4 new patches today full of fresh mushrooms with some caps still closed and still colored rather than faded. Found about 200 total, but only spent 20 minutes driving in a few neighborhoods on my way back from deer hunting this morning. I have plenty of mushrooms and really don;t need to be picking anymore, I just love getitng out there and finding them, its so much fun I can;t resist just checking one or two neighborhoods on my spare time

I found these in my weilii patch. I noticed they where mainly growing in the portion of the yard that had been recently mowed, were as the weiliis where growing in the untended portion of the yard. I have noticed that rain washes of the velvety powder, and the waterlooged mushrooms can easily be mistaken by an untrained eye.

Psyathrella velutina are largely cincidered to be edible but do not warent consumption. i must say that i'm not yet sold on the id, though it may just be due to the fact that the specimens are old.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Trsut me, I promise you, I gurantee you, I put my life on it, those are Psathrella velutinas, I have picked many a thousands of them. These mushrooms are actually a pet pieve of mine. I always have people bringing me these mushrooms asking if they are weilii, ontop of that someone here at the shroomery posts pictures of them atleast once a week asking for ID, and no one seems to know what they are. Learn your velvets people!!!
