Weilii - Habitat North GA - Various hunting info * 4
    #10985579 - 09/02/09 10:18 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:

Open area of forest where pine trees were damaged by pine beetles. Look for areas that have mature dead, but still standing trees. My experience so far is that there will be several downed trees with lots of debris in the area also. There should be areas of that are decomposing and soft when stepped on.

Once you find this type of area you will find this type of shroom in huge numbers. Once you train your eye, they are easily spotted.

My advice look for these areas when driving around, it is much easier to spot them from a distant then when you get into the woods. Find a discreet and safe parking area that will not draw attention.

Gills:
off white to brownish

Stem:
strong, some are the circumference of a nickel but most are about 1/4"

Cap:
varies, from yellowish to brown, some blackish. sizes were from 1 1/4" to 6" around

Spore print color:
Dark Brown

Bruising:
greenish/blue to blackish

Other information:
smell pleasant, between a cabbage and a cucumber.

If these are, then I need to get back to the spot. There are literally hundreds of these growing, some are huge. I can easily fill a garbage bag within a couple hours. My fingers are turning bluish black just from handling. Anyone know how to cure and store these for the future.

Just dry them at room temperature under a fan. But make sure that they are cracker dry (stipes should snap, not bend) before you store them, or they will rot. That may take a while, depending on your relative humidity and room tempreture. Spread them out on newspaper to dry them, so they aren't piled over each other, but separated as single specimen.

Those are, without a shadow of a doubt, Weilii. Beautiful Woodland Weilii at that. What town did you find them in?

Thanks...do you think I should go pick a few more and store them? I still am amazed at the quantity growing, I picked about a hundred of them in a 15' diameter. There could be over a thousand left. I just dont want to damage the area for future. Also, any ideas on qty and consumption?

I found these near gainesville, ga.

The smell you can't place is probably that of an old cucumber or peach, which is what weilii smell like. Youre looking for a dark brown spore print.

These do very well appear to be weilii, and you have found a spot that will more than likely give you weilii for the next few years.

Weilii indeed, and beautiful specimens they are. Dry 'em out (I usually set them out in the open on paper or something) and enjoy! 2g dry is a good trip (morphing, body, etc.) I really enjoy the experience around 3.5g gives me. If I'm at a music festival or something I REALLY like those 5-6g trips! Nothing else like Weilii.... going to find more today!

You MUST go out and pick all the mature specimen or you will leave them to rot, which would be a crying shame! They have already fulfilled their purpose in life and dropped spores, so you aren't doing any damage. Just make sure you aren't tearing them out of the ground along with chunks of mycelium (some of the ones in your pics looked a little violated). Cut them off or twist them off above the ground clipping them off with your fingernails.
BTW, please send me a spore print. :hehehe:

When you say "open area" of mulch and pine trees..  what exactly do you mean?  In a neighborhood?

I just went back out, picked a box full and two lunch baggies stuffed to the rim. I am really overwhelmed and may just have to leave them to rot. My first calculations were off, there are several thousand still out there. I can't even go a few feet without finding more. There are clusters that look to have 40-50 shrooms in each. Call in the cavalry! How many days will these last? Do I have to go back and get them today? Will post more pics later.

This is were the pine forest have bald or open areas. Many of them grow around the dead pine limbs also. I found them in direct sun with nothing around but red clay and I found them under dead branches, but all within a few feet of the areas I described above. Trees look to be about 12-15yrs old. At least this is what I am finding, and this is my first time finding them so I may not know crap!

that's too awesome.  lol

i went "house hunting" today in some newer neighborhoods and saw little piles of mixed throwaways here and there in cul-de-sacs.  i have a feeling everyone is out and about.

pine forest, eh?

yeah, i'm curious as to how long maturity takes from first sprout.  how long before they start to rot out there?
