Mormonism
    #9607583 -

There have been a lot of topics abotu this in the Shroomery's history, and a lot of nasty things have been said. I am a mormon, and I have not taken offense. Frankly.... we deserve it.

Here's the thing. A lot of traditions in the mormon church are very silly. I never have, and never intend to, owned a pair of the mormon underpants. I have never been to the temple - partially because I am a relatively new member, but also because I don't buy 100% of their crap.

There are a lot of traditions and stupidity in the church, and a lot of things that frankly, deserve to get us teased and tormented. I just wanted to take a moment to point out the good done by us as well.

Regardless of what you believe, you can't honestly think we have not done more bad than good. The service projects every church plans - at least once a month - for their area alone is of great help to the communities. I personally, have been the head of multiple such projects, and can tell you all that we ultimately are positive roles on society. People have had lives turned around by us - the same as can be said for most if not all religions - and even if eternal souls have not been saved, peoples lives have.

Now, I'm not trying to paint us as saints, or people who have the right of it. I'm nto trying to convert anybody, or preach or anything. Frankly, I'd be one of the first people out there to make fun of mormons, and quite frankly, I do. A lot.

But while I am not offended by anything said here, I dofeel tha we hve not been looked at fairly. While most among the mormon community - myself, for the most part, happily excluded - do have some crazy, stupid, ignorant believes, we are - in the majority - good people, and while many of us do have a tendency to be fanatics, we are always there to help, constantly happy to do what is right, simply because it's the right thing to do. MOST of us are open-minded to other's believes, even if we keep our own, and ask only that if we are to be teased, our believes are examined and studied fairly beforehand.

And no, somebody saying "My friend told me that priests who marry couples in the temple get to use their "holy fingers" to "consecrate" the women's genitals" (which is not in the least true, but a silly rumor I have heard, on this very site, none the less) does not count as fair examination.

With that having been said, I think we can all get at least one more good chuckle at the magical mormon underwear.

Why the need for such institution when you're after all a good and complete person inside ? You wouldn't have been dragged into it by family and friend indoctrination would you ? I feel the fear of peer rejection, and the need to view the world through a tiny, compact and comfortable pin-hole of beliefs, is burning strong in all of us. Good luck.

I dig the Mormons' strong interest in genealogy.

I don't know if you've seen the excellent South Park episode about Mormons, but it ends the same way.  "We've never done anything buy try and help people, and you just shit all over us."  So while I don't believe your religion at all, it's great that you're doing good things for the community.  God speed.

Dammit, I was going to leave it, but I had to reply because you wrote this bit.

I would say you don't stay open-minded to other's beliefs, because you only have to go as far as Wikipedia to get a great insight into the inconsistencies and outright falsehoods in the book of Mormon, and the religion as a whole.

I was a very intense Christian for 25 years, and then I finally took a critical look at my religion.  It became fairly evident to me that I was following a sham, and I think if you actually took a critical look at what your Church teaches, you'll find it's all a load of rubbish too.

Helping your fellow man and doing good works are admirable attributes, but you don't have to go to a church or even follow a religion to do those things.  I encourage you to step back and take a good hard look at what the evidence really says.

They certainly are efficacious in slaughtering innocent pioneers. As least they had the balls to blame it on the Indians.

Indigenous: From what I have heard, though I dunno for sure, the magical underpants are supposed to ward off evil spirits, and protect those with strong faith from physical harm. They represent something, but I dunno what...

Humbolt: Again, I'm not here to say "my religion is right, join up, you're wrong", etc. I'm only here to say that while many of the standard mormon traditions and stereotypes ARE, agreeably, more than a little laughable, we have not been given a fair examination in that we have been persecuted as a people, when our only difference is the religion we have. And again, I have not taken personal offense to this - frankly, I laugh along with it, and agree that many of the traditions have been changed, for whatever reason, and that this church, like all others, has changed too much to truly be what Christ would have wanted (though, IMO, it's the closest out there). My main point, however, is that when people hear one is mormon, that person is generally cast out for being different (sometimes, admittedly, by their own choice).

EDIT: Your first post made that point quite well, I see. While I disagree with you in the second post, I like how you stated it. =>

OrgoneConclusion: You mean the story of the Saint's jouney to Utah? It wasn't the indians, man. In the state of Missouri, a law was passed (and thankfully, has since been repealed) that said if you happened to see a mormon on the street, you could kill him without fear of consequence. It was the American people as a whole that persecuted the Saints than, and though the severity has dwindled quite a bit, that much has remained mostly unchanged.

Decypher: Yeah, genealogy is the shit. I'm actually going to be starting my own family history soon. Who knows? Maybe I'll post a topic elsewhere, telling about mine and asking about others.

No, I meant what I said. The Mormons slaughtered almost 200 pioneers to send a message to Washington and then blamed the local Indians for the massacre. Look it up. Hmmm, I wonder why I detest most religions...

Because you judge entire belief systems by the actions of a visible minority?

Puh-lease! The killings were sanctioned by Brigham Young, the founder of Mormonism.

I'm not sure where you heard that, Orgone, but I assure you that it i not true. During the time in which the Saints were making ther journey, they numbered only a few hundred, MAYBE a thousand or so. No man of a religion that needs to grow would kill such a high percentage of the members.

That aside, why on Earth would he blame Native Americans when there were so many others lining up to end their lives?

This is not accurate.  An Executive Order was issued during the Morman War of 1838 allowing for the extermination or removal of Mormons from the state.  It was never made into law, and technically became void at the end of the war.  While it may have contributed to forced removal of Mormons after the war was over, it does not appear to have resulted in any murders post-conflict.

Also, in re the massacre of pioneers:

Your 'assurance' is supposed to hold more credence than historical records? Umm - OK. Naturally, you did not do any research like I requested - typical.

Not to mention the fact that the Mormons started the whole thing:

Quote:
Sidney Rigdon, the leader of the Mormons, said it is the duty of the Mormons to trample them into the earth, and if the county cannot be freed from them any other way I [Sidney] will assist to trample them down or to erect a gallows on the Square of Far West and hang them up as they did the gamblers at Vicksburg and it would be an act at which the angels would smile with approbation.

Doesn't sound like a peaceful loving religion to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extermination_order#Speeches_by_Sidney_Rigdon

But really, can you trust a religion that has re-written its history and its Bible so many times?  Also there are these small problems.
