San Pedro
    #9599866 -

Hola.

So, i've decided to put my last 5 seeds into the ground.  This will be my third attempt.  I've only limited information on how to really take care of these guys, and i'm a relatively novice gardener.  The first time, I got germination of 3 SanPedro + 3 Peyote.  The peyote were demolished by turkeys, and the Pedro i believe were over-exposed to sunlight too fast, too early (went pink, took them out of sun, went green, then went soft, maybe too much water?).  The second time i got no germinations, but i think this is because the soil was of the wrong consistency, caked, and they could not break through.

So i've come here just to get some real advice from people who have succeeded in this foray, that seems to take a generous amount of attention and care.  I have the time, i have the drive, i just don't think that i'm going about it correctly :frown:

I filled up one large (~150-200mm diam) black plastic pot with 1/3 fine sand and the rest store bought 'premium grade succulent mix', as I've read that San Pedro likes a more fertile environment, than say Peyote.  The contents were thoroughly soaked and left to stand.  After about an hour, i placed the seeds on the surface, and then covered them in a minimal amount of soil.  I've then covered the pot in cellophane, poked in a few holes, and misted the air-space.

Now, i've got these guys on as Southern facing a position as i can, so shouldn't get sunburnt this time.  As i'm not sure if my previous foray was killed due to sunburn or over watering, when should i water the guys?  I'm currently using a spray bottle with a mist setting.

When should i start to fertilise, if at all? ie: is it nesescary?
I've read i'm supposed to 'acclimatise' them to a harsher environment, what does this mean?  starting with 1 hour in a direct sun position and working my way up?
Finally, have i made any critical errors so far? :S

I'd really like to be able to say i grew these from seed, and not just ordered them from the store.  Any help will be hungrily absorbed, thank you

don't bury the seeds at all, they need light to trigger germination.

south facing window in the aussie summer is probably too much light, depends on how much diffusion you are getting from the glass and the plastic over the top though... could be ok but keep a very close eye on them.

don't let the soil dry out until they are a few months old and no longer require high humidity.
once they are adjusted to normal indoor conditions you can start letting the soil dry out a bit more.

ferts are not neccessary at this stage.

"acclimatise" refers to all aspects of growing conditions, humidity levels, light, temps, etc etc...
basically if you are changing any of the growing conditions do it slowly in stages.

Thats the best information I ever got about germinating cacti seeds.  I got a much higher germ rate because of it. Goodluck man!

Ok, so when you plant you usually just leave them to sit on the surface?
They're not buried too deep, only pushed them down the tiniest bit with a stick, and covered them a little.
*sigh* i'll have no chance of finding a tiny black seed in a mass of black earth, so here's hoping that they do germinate.

Thanks for your input!

yea, you push them in the dirt but don't cover them.  I covered them when I first started growing and I still got sprouts. So it does work, just not as well.

Yeah those seeds are damn small, when I got some in the mail I couldn't believe how small they were.

yes, sow on the surface of the soil.
i usually just sprinkle a thin layer of sand over the seed trays after the seeds have been sown...
but it's not even enough to bury them, just to surround them really.

you could still get a few to pop, but don't hold your breath.
