Although it's hard to tell from the photo (;)), it looks like your heimia are about the same size as mine. I keep their soil nicely damp by occaisional bottom watering, so as not to disturb them, and keep them in a plastic bag. This keeps humidity high, so they don't need watering very often at all. Mine are under flouros, I don't think I'm going to risk stronger light until they're about an inch tall, because they look a bit fragile to me.
I'm not saying that is the best way to do it, though... I would also like to know what their natural habitat is like!

It's native from Mexico to Argentina. Well drained soil with a good supply of water is good.

Keep the soil wet by misting or bottom watering until all the seeds have germinated. Once the first true leaves appear expose the pot to more and more sun and let the surface dry between waterings.

If anyone can tell me what specie the seedling is I will give the person the rest of the seeds I have to this plant in reward  unless I am breaking a rule or something now of course.

Keep your seeds, but it's either Rivea Corymbrosa, HBWR, or morning glory.

probably rivea. MG doesn't fit that seed description, and HBWR fits that description minus being too big. Rivea fits perfectly.

If you still wanna give your seeds away, give them to the next person that posts in this thread. Or give them away in the Free Ethno seed thread.

I'd say the top one is rivea for sure or an extremely close relative. The reason I say that is because I sprouted some rivea recently and they all have the horseshoe shaped cotyledens (seed leaves) and then they have heart shaped leaves from then on out. It's a vine and seems to like sun but perhaps not all day.

As was said by neuro, do not keep the soil constantly wet on any plant. The only exception to that would be something like lotus that always grows in a pond.

I would give those rivea seedlings full sun. They like a decent amount of water too. You'll notice a build up of leaves(beautiful, heartshaped and dark green) before it starts to tendril. Very easy to grow. Now if I can only get my vines to flower.

the Sinicuichi have startet to grow alot faster now. I started to give it bottom watering and let it dry more out between each watering and have put it in sunlight. They have grown at least 200% since that picture. I have some new seedlings now also , Nicotiana glauca, Nicotinia rustica and Nicotinia tabacum have all started to grow. Thorn apples have also popped up. Will update with pics soon

Wow, your heimia is doing well now! I've just moved mine outside, and it seems to have speeded up too.
I can't wait until my mutant heimia gets bigger so I can get some better pics! It has three leaves at each node instead of two .

Good growing!

yeah, i have mine in the window but only because the summer this year have been cold and rainy.

I have some troubles with my salvia cutting,. i cant upload more pics today but it is hangin down, it looks overwatered.  , i have it under a drinking glass in a pot in the window with indirect sunlight.
Q: Do salvia use long time to recover from a gel transport (the cutting is from the shroomery vendor mushmush.nl)
maybe una can answer me this: can it be that the gel is still on the roots ? will this be a problem- im pretty sure most of it got washed away but im starting to wonder

ps! the digital camera used is a free one I got for subscribing to time magazine. the quality of the photos are there after, when i get a job one day i will get a better one

failed attempts: Chicalote and Californian Poppies [Re: Mystiq_Shaman]
    #2973073 - 08/06/04 05:56 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Chicalote (Argemone munita)

These died off, i have one left (right pic) but this doesnt seem like a plant that yuo want to grow indoors. I will not try to do later attempt on tis plant either.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Californian Poppies (Eschscholzia californica)

06.08

These seedlings died off pretty fast. This was never a serious attempt to grow californian poppies, more a "throw some seeds in a spare pot and see what comes up" try. I will saw californian poppies outdoors next year. I knew from the start that these would probably die.

Heimia seeds are really small...
I had very good germination rates though. I sprinkled them on the surface of the soil quite liberally, and had to thin them out a lot! I probably threw away 100 seedlings, just because I wasn't expecting that many to germinate....
I kept the soil moist, and put cling-film over the top to keep their atmosphere at around full humidity.
I still have a load of seeds if you want some good ones.

I hardened off quite a few Salvia's without problems. Since the medium contains sugars it may give problems with infection if it isn't washed of completely.Although your pic is a bit blurry it still seems pretty ok to me. Just give it a little time, and when you see new growth give it a little more air (don't take of the jar completely!)

Heimia seedlings really slow each other down. I would definatly reccomend that you repot them as soon as possible.

Mine shot up really quickly once they where moved outside.

salvia update, salvia has been transfered to self watering pot and it seems to do fine there. the plant seems to get healthier and healthier for every day.

Sinicuichi update. Ok they did not transfer well, only one survived (left pic) but is very weak,  i left the others in the pot alone . I will plant more seeds of this plant under better conditions soon and concider these to be "test plants"

I have bundle flower seedlings coming up now, and the tobacco is doing well also. Californinan poppies is a sad story indoors, i threw them out because i could see really soon no chance. These will wait to next year. I tried to transplant chicalote also, i have one thats still alive.  will not try to grow this plant again, I will see how long the one I have will live and thats it.

Yeah heimia sure are fragile. You'd be surprised how quickly they can recover though given enough direct sunlight.

I found that the root system grows very quickly. Mine started becoming root bound only 1 month after transferring.

updatet last post with the pics i couldnt upload last time

Una: it goes very well. I was wondering about one thing. as you can see on the pics i use a pretty big glas jar over it. Should I just let it grow inside it until there is no mare space or should I try to adopt it early to a lower humidity. i measured the room humidity to be 44% today. This varies from 25 to 50%. I tried to lift off the glass and the leaves fall down after not very long time. ??
will update more pics of it in a day or two

also i have lots of san pedros coming up now. every day is christmas in my grow room  but there will be no more species for now, I will wait until the winter\spring next year.
stay tuned

Seeds just started to germinate. are being kept moist under plastic wrap. they seems to do ok. as soon as the winter is over im gonna plant way more san pedro and also peyote and peruvian torch and some other cactuses as well. I am worried how these seedlings will take the winter, im not sure if late summer is the best time to start up cactuses. any opinions on this?

They'll be OK inside, in a fairly bright position. They don't like too much light anyway when young. My young seedlings spend winter under a little flourescent lightbulb, and they keep growing just fine.

Good luck with them!

updated 31.aug: upd pics: salvia, tobacco, san pedro posts.

Now the salvia has outgrown its jar. is it time to stop using jars or should I build a little greenhouse or something for it?

everything else is doing ok

here are some other seedlings, what you see is rock dagga, tomatoes, anis, wormwood and wild strawberries.

Thanks openmindet

Well I took the jar off the salvia seedling and it growing fast  I have had some heat issues with my cannabis plants but working on it.

But something concerns me, my san pedro seedlings is growing fine and all but the surface the perlitte looks like it has turned green. is this normal?

Of course my free camera from time magazine is now broken so I cant take any pics for a while but I have orderet a celluar phone with camera so I will update this thread soon enough.

The green stuff are algae, and it is a common problem in starting cactus seedlings.
I believe it's caused by standing water.

What I usually do when I have algae is to flush the soil with clean water, here's how:

take the pot with seedlings to the sink or someplace where the water can drain off, then carefully pour some lukewarm water on top, and let the soil drain. the water coming out of a pot with algae usually is brown and smells bad. :argh: Repeat until the draining water turns clear and stops smelling.

This will not get rid of the algae, but it will make it harder for them to take over the pot, and as long as they don't take over and start choking the seedlings, they are fairly harmless.
Besides, I feel better knowing that my seedlings are standing in clean water.

thanks for clearing that up ,  I will try this method out

well I finnaly gotmyself a camera, 2 megapixels and everything so now im gonna take budshots tomorrow and other pics as well

I found out that what I thought to be a Rock Dagga (since i planted rock dagga seeds in the pot) actually was a cannabis plant. I have no idea how that seed got into that pot. strange thing.

you got a bitchin garden.  so many wicked plants, although i really dont liek tomato plants.  think its the smell.

as for you algea.  thats what you get for using perlite.  i HATE that crap, its everywhere it seems.  cant hardly buy a dirt without it.  perlite is the enemy, yar it sucks nuts.

anyway i find it grows much better wehn i have potting/topsoil and perlite in it.  now for cacti i only use a clay type soil thats in the yard and crushed rock.  it is amazingly similar to the type of dirt peyote is in wild (texture, water absorbtion wise).  it works great and my cacti have never been so happy.

perlite= algea starter in my experience.  especially the commercial dirts that oten already have it growing in it.

i think this should almost be in the garden faq.  it has very good descritions of you plants growing conditions.  that would sure help a lot of people out if jsut starting theres out...im looking at this thread when i get seeds of soem of the species.
