As a child I never thought about death. Playing was all that mattered and seemed eternal. Then it slowly dawned on me that playing wasn't eternal. Bummer. That certainly was worrisome.

It seems eternal because we haven't yet developed the adult's dumb habit of obsessing about the past and future.  When you are really in the moment it might as well be eternal; no fear, no death anxiety.  Soooo hard to stay there, only because the mind starts to think again.  Fucking mind.  Ruining my fun.

:suicide:

 This is why the idea of being in the moment is so popular.

I certainly have a fear of growing old, though.

Minor fear = beckers death anxiety. Sublimation.

Icelander said:The problem was I could not lie to myself and realized that what everyone was selling had no basis in fact as far as I could tell. It became easy to see everyone blowing smoke and I also saw myself doing it.

Maybe you just haven't found a convincing enough smoke yet?

It's not a fear of myself dying though; I'm fine with the thought of my eventual non-existence.  It's just that I don't want to live and slowly see my tissues decay into disease; watch my once-agile mind grow slow and forgetful; or see my muscles atrophy and my slouch become more pronounced.  I don't want to be rotting away in a nursing home and be unable to take care of myself while I still have life pumping through my veins.

Death is preferable to old age, IMO.  Hunter S. Thompson style for the win.

Are you saying I won't be thinking the same thing if my death was an immediate, tangible thing?

This is indeed possible.  It's just that I see no point in battling or worrying over something so inevitable--kind of like trying to cling to the fading remnants of a dream instead of resigning one's self to waking up.

It doesn't matter what is said, it will be twisted into death anxiety....
And everything that is said, will further prove that....    Somehow....

No?  Sometimes when I'm depressed I can notice my mood palpably suck the energy from other people during conversations.  A very flat affect, no expressed emotion, lack of verbal motivation--all of these are somewhat amusing to see infect others.  Mania can also do the same (but with an opposite effect) that I've noticed, although this is harder to spontaneously control.

  It's pretty common IMO.  You've never noticed that talking to certain people just drains your energy and motivation?

I discovered the concept of death anxiety quite by accident. I was looking for some Spiritual truth to set me free.

I see, I did misunderstand.
It's odd that it was so circular.

Because I won't get to sit at your feet and meditate for all eternity.

Consciously I don't dwell on it. At least not when I'm fishing and in a flow state. (Hey there's a river pun in there somewhere)

Look at everything you love, every amazing experience you have had. When you die there is the possibility none of this will ever "be" again. That is a horrible thing to dwell on if you choose to do so. While you're mind may not dwell, it neverthereless is in despair about the fact it could lose it all.

People often assume that just because they don't dwell on something because there is no point, then it isn't there. The bit that hold's everything long term but does not include in the moment thought, is what most people call the unconscious. In my opinion it is only unconscious if you choose not to give your attention to it but it is still there when your attention is directed. Give your attention to death/nothingness and i believe you will see you are afraid of the inevitabilty of the lack of experience it entails. You may be able to consciously reason that it is inevitable but in the same way that inevitability and acceptance would make the idea of torture no less scary in itself, death is no less frightening as a concept.
