Thinking about going to the looney bin
    #9257533 -

I really think I might have the crazies and that maybe I should check myself in to the looney bin for a few months, get my chemicals balanced out, etc. Has anyone ever done this? How did it go over?

It's not that bad. You get marginally insane people. Usually it's just people who have lost it, not the criminally insane.

You can usually get cigarettes and sometimes there are drugs... depends on who's there when you get in. Usually shwag you get to smoke out of regular paper, or heroin from the blacks.

If you're already on medication they decide when you take it, so forget that "take as needed" prescription you had. Don't get belligerent -- they'll give you seroquel or other antipsychotics to just shut you the fuck up. It sucks when it happens to you, but it's a reprieve when someone won't fucking shut the fuck up.

Just go. It's not that bad. It's not jail or anything.

I've also been considering it lately, but I don't want to stay longer than I feel the need to, and I'm scared they might want to keep me.

Don't you guys think that simply cutting back on the mind altering intoxication for a while to set your heads straight is a better idea to begin with? Not saying that you shouldn't go if you feel like you need some professional help, but maybe you are the first to start helping yourself by changing stuff in your life that is the possible cause for the way you feel.
The main thing I'd be worried about is not properly being taken care of, as in trying to cure whatever the mental issue is, but being sedated and set in a rocking chair by the window like gramps, so you are just one less problem on the medical staff's already tight schedule.
But I don't know. Maybe the looney bins are good where you are. I couldn't see myself checking into one by my own choice.

I'm pretty sure if you check yourself in, you're allowed to check yourself out whenever you want if you're over 18.

That's not always true.  If they decide you are a risk, they'll hold you.

And that's exactly the point. Would I trust others to judge whether my humble - possibly medicated - self is ok to be released from the funny farm? I don't think so. Once they say that you are crazy as fuck and need to be locked up, try and prove that you aren't when you are drooling, because of the tranquilizers or whatever other sedating meds they give you. I am not saying that it's like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but you can't say it's impossible either.
Why's it that Americans (I am just assuming you are) are so overly obsessed with turning themselves in at some kind of rehab?
"What are you doing this weekend, Bob?"
"Oh, I'll be going to stay at the Betty Ford Clinic for a week or two."
"What's it this time?"
"Alcohol."
"Wasn't it because of your cocaine habit last month?"
"Yeah..."

i thought i could leave anytime but they made me stay and forced me to take a large regimen of risperdal, which if you look up the side effects, one of them is death.  i still get muscle spasms and other nasty side effects even though i havent taken risperdal in 2 years.

i would not want a trip to a mental institution on any kind of record that any kind of employers could find. i'm already fucked as far as getting any kind of position with the government because i took antidepressants for a few months my junior year in high school (parents made me). not that i would want to work for the government...i'm just pointing out how things like this can screw you over in ways you would never anticipate.

The main thing that worries about me is my psychotic tendencies. Sometimes Im afraid that I am a real danger to both myself and others. I can go a week completely lucid sometimes, but when it hits it hits bad.

apparently nobody here has EVER tried actually admitting themselves before

so lemme just clear somethin up for yas real quick here:
unless yera danger to either yourself or others - they WON'T take you...period!
(or in the very least: not for more then the first initial 24 hours anyway)

people who aren't a danger - get therapy / and people who are - don't get let back out again

psych wards are upscale 'prisons' for people who were born different then others and who are not capable of functioning in society as is expected of em  :yesnod:

the mental hospital was the closest i've been to hell on earth.  thats just my experience though.

to fix your problems you have to do positive things, not negative.  if you go to a mental hospital you will most likely be surrounded by people who hate you (negative energy) and that isn't going to help you.  try singing or mantra or meditation or spinning around in circles just anything to get rid of the mind baggage.

You sound like you're in a lucid state now.  At least you are asking for advice.  That's a good sign.  Why don't you talk about your psychosis in here and maybe some good will come of it.  Most of us have some kind of social anxiety.  Hell, we're in here or on the boards, aren't we?

It's hard to give any useful advice until we know a bit more about what the symptoms are like what kind of behaviors you are exhibiting.

For now, I'd say drop all drugs, eat healthy and get plenty of exercise/sleep.
