Question: Fully Colonized Mycelium
    #9036291 -

Quick question. Im was just wondering if there is a sure fire way to know if a substrate has been fully colonized. Ive heard people say that once the entire outside is covered in mycelium, then it should be fully colonized, but i was wondering if there is another way. Should I wait a certain amount of time after i see the outside totally covered? Are there any other techniques I should know about??

Any response would be greatly appreciated! thanks guys!

give it a week after the outside is done. There's no guaranteed way to know, but that's a good rule of thumb. If you take it out of the jar before the inside is fully colonized, it will sit in your FC doing nothing until it is anyway and open to contam for that much longer.

Agree with Nenl, that way you can make sure.

usually if it starts to pin its fully colonized

In this case, remove it as soon and carefully as you can to the FC. Ideally you get it out just before pinning. If pins are damaged I'd say pick them off so they don't abort or suck up nutrients only to become contaminated later. Then case / dunk and roll. Might be unnecessary, but that's just what I would do...

Alot of people crumble which gives you an idea how colonized what you can't see is. If its almost 100% crumbling is probably not a good idea.

you can usually tell once the outside is fully colonized but you must worry about the center. waiting around a week as stated above will ensure that the center is colonized and you should be good to go. If pinning is ever initiated you can only be certain that the spawn is fully colonized.

Waiting the extra week after full colonization has nothing to do with the center.  If the outside of the brf is colonized, the inside is too.  The reason is that the largest distance is around the outside of the jar, therefore there is no way the outside would be colonized before the middle.

The reason to wait a week is to allow the mycelium to consolidate its hold on the substrate.  It won't pin until then anyway, so leaving it in the jar during that time prevents shocking or otherwise slowing down the mycelium during that critical phase.

thanx RR, i swear i learn something new from you everyday. i knew waiting also gave it time to get a "hold" of the substrate but thought that the main reason was to ensure full colonization.

so listen to RR  lol, wait so that it has a hold of your jars and then your free to birth
