Is my incubator too hot?
    #7086810 - 06/24/07 10:55 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

The water heater is set to 80, but the temperature where I keep the jars is 86. I read somewhere that the temperature in the jars is 5 degrees warmer which would be too hot. Should I turn it down? I'm growing mazatapec.

I have never noticed a five degree difference. I actually did an experiment on this and found that the difference is only two degrees on average. I would suggest turning it down about a degree or two if you are worried about it.

I believe that RogerRabbit recommends not incubating at all. That being said, yes, 86 is too hot. Turn it down to like 80.

Edit: I didn't notice that you have the heater set at 80 already. Just turn it off.

i just had this same problem. RR suggested to reduce to 78 degrees or lower and my ambient temp is 74 degrees. after reducing temp to 78 and waiting for the water temp to stabilize i noticed a DRASTIC increase in colonization speed. since youre ambient temp is higher id say set it to 75 or lower for the next few days. if you still have no change set it to 72. worst case scenario if your house is too warm and you turn the incubator off completely the water in the exterior tub will be a temperature buffer to the outside, somewhat cooling the inside tub. good luck!

also in line with what sultan said i added a bath towel to act as a heat sink on the bottom of my tub. i agree make sure you have a 1 1/2 to 2 inch buffer between your jars and the bottom.

Oh yeah, that looks a little hot to me. Try getting your incubation temp closer to 80F where the jars are as they do produce a little heat of their own. I use an incubator, but only because the temperature in the surrounding area is like 60F.

Peace

My room temperature is 81, so I'll just keep them on the shelf for now.

Good move. Incubators cause way more problems then they solve. I haven't used one in years. Glass is an insulator and holds heat very well. I've seen up to a ten degree increase over ambient in the temperature inside the quart jars of grains, when a thermocouple is inserted into the center of the jar.

The other problem with using a tub as an incubator is stale air. It does little good to have filters and holes in your lids if they all just vent into a sealed tub.

Normal room temperature is fine for colonization of mycelium. Colonization speed peaks in the 75F to 81F range, and falls off dramatically above 83F. Stamets published a chart in one of his books that said 86F is the fastest for growth, and that is just plain wrong.
