How long will pint jars last when fully colonized?
    #992145 - 10/25/02 11:52 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Me and my friend have a few fully colonized pint jars and just haven't had time to make the casing. They are the orisis strain and we were just wondering how long they can stay in the jars in the incubator. They have been colonized for about two weeks now are they going to go bad or will they be ok?

Two weeks is fine. If you want to store them for much longer, I recommend putting them in the fridge.

How long do you think they would last in the fridge? Weeks? Days? Months?

I kept some pints of EQ's in the fridge for roughly two months. No problems.

I think I read that Anno has kept them for up to a year in the fridge.

Why would you put a fully colonized jar into the fridge? Is this to delay pinning?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am a newbie.

That's why I put mine in the fridge. You can also put cakes in the fridge to cold shock. Cold shock cakes for more than 12 hour but less than 24 hours. Stall mycelium, well for as long as you need too.

"fully colonized pint jars"

Of what?

I have kept jars of colonized bird seed under refrigeration for months & all worked well, when put to use.

If you stick a load of colonized BRF/Vermic jars in a fridge (sealed etc) for say 1 month and then try to use them with a casing layer would this work
The reason I ask is that surely the prolonged refrigeration acts as a cold shock.  If your gonna case you don't want the mycelium getting a shock until after it started to peek through the casing layer (i,e you want a bit more vegative growth).

Informed answers would be uselful as this is a predicament I'm about to face

>If you stick a load of colonized BRF/Vermic jars in a fridge (sealed etc) for say 1 month and then try to use them with a casing layer would this work

So this was a question?
Without a ?-mark?

The answer, if this was a question, would be yes, you can stick them in a fridge for 1, 2, 6 months, even longer, and use them thereafter.

A little pedantic but yes this was a question.  The emphasis being on actually casing the cakes as opposed to sticking them straight into a fruiting chamber.

Does the  icon with 3 question marks on his head not make it clear  ???

Respect for all your advice Anno
