Cordyceps mycelium cultivation

When cordyceps mycelium is sold as encapsulated mycelium, is this powdered grain that has been completely colonized with the mycelium, or is this actually pure mycelium grown in a liquid culture? If it is grown in a liquid culture, does anyone have any info on the parameters / nutrients required for optimal medicinal properties?

This isn't specific for Cordyceps,but I recall Stamets saying that when growing mycelium for medicinal purposes,they find it is better (more effective) to grow it onto grain before extraction,rather than just liquid culture.
