Eeee eeE eiieee *click click* ee eeee Eieee eee!
    #9009006 -

Unless someone can accurately translate this greeting from one of our genetic cousins, I contend that communication with an ET species is nigh impossible.

Seriously

Dolphins use tools in the form of sea sponges, and different pods around the world have different "dialects" of squeaks and clicks.  Amazing stuff

When researchers first saw something strange on the snout of a dolphin in Shark Bay, Western Australia, they thought it was a massive tumor. Now they say it provides the first evidence of a tool-use culture in marine mammals.

The object turned out to be a marine sponge broken off from the seabed. Later other bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay were observed holding sponges over their beaks, and appeared to use them as a fishing tool.

Researchers now report this odd hunting technique originated in a single female and is passed from mother to daughter.

Basing their findings on genetic analysis, the team suggests that this so-called sponging behavior represents the first known example of tool-related culture in cetaceans. Cetaceans are a group of mostly marine animals, including whales and dolphins.

...

"The sponges probably act as a protective glove so the dolphins don't get stung by stonefish," Krützen added. (The stonefish is a bottom dweller with highly venomous spines.) The sponge also appears to disturb fish hiding on the seabed. The dolphins then snap the fish up.

Observers also noted one dolphin spraying a dirty rock with Formula 409 and another dolphin sponging it off. :yesnod:

But we can still have sex with a dolphin, even though we don't understand each other's language. That alone fills me with hope.

Yeah, but if we do have any ET sexual encounters, you can bet the human will be the bitch.

How would you know if a given translation attempt was right or wrong....?    :smirk:

The answer to that quite simple, but before I spill the beans, I will wait for any translations.

BTW, this is actually meant to be a serious thread. I have long contended that we will be unable to communicate with an alien species who's bilogical structure, needs and desires are so foregon to our own.

A common ground is needed and it is unlikely to be pi or prime numbers.

Hell, consider the cuttlefish who communicate with skin pigment shifts of complex moving patterns that we will never know the nuances of.

We may not be able to communicate with a dolphin in the same way in which we communicate with each other, but that does not mean that we do not communicate at all. Even though we may not be intelligent, or developed enough (yet) to have a clear conversation with a dolphin, that does not mean that an alien species would not be intelligent, or developed enough to do so with us.

If another sentient life form intelligent enough to travel through space(assuming that space travel isn't in some way an innate part of their existence in the same way that a dolphin swims, and we walk) were to evolve in another part of the universe, their forms of communication may be so distant, and "alien" to us that we cannot yet conceptualize them. Perhaps the will greet us in an advanced language of beard strokes :strokebeard::strokebeard2::strokebeard3::strokebeard2::strokebeard:

Oh and I am Dr. Mokinus from the planet yomomm-ma7 and what the dolphin is trying to tell you is "quit fucking up my water ya fin-less cunt......dry land is a myth!"

Not to mention our 5 senses may be completely different from how aliens sense the world and therefore communicate.

But eyesight evolved here or earth independently in several animal kingdoms... assuming they come from a solar system they can probably see. But they may not see the same wavelength as us or even perceive it in the same way... but that at least is a start. "Impossible" is too strong a word I think.

Unless they are a race that evolved underground...or on a planet with thick cloud cover...or in some strange, far off place in the universe that works in a completely different way...etc

the easiest way to communicate with dolphins is to set a deprivation tank up next to a dolphin tank, take 12 dry gram cubes and 800mg ketamine.  soon enough you'll be in the dolphin hive mind.

800mg is a bit much ain't it? 150 at most if you're mainlining.

And then you can so far as to contact Galactic Control Central and discover the real beings pulling the strings on planet Earth.

Then to get further instruction, you start IMing ketamine daily, sometimes twice a day, until you are committed to an insane asylum...
