Cultivating Wild Subbs
    #8990812 -

Been trying to figure out the best way to do this.

This is what Ive found through research:
-grow well on horse manure, and soggy grass clippings
-Most widely found mushroom species
-Many people have had success growing them in gardens or lawns.

Heres my situation:
-Im in Alaska, where the prime season for these are now.
-They wont be around in the winter
-Id like to grow them (indoors of course)

After researching mushroom cultivation a little, mostly Psilocybe Cubensis, and unfortunately after finding that subbs dont grow the same way (after I bought all the supplies), this is what Ive come up with:

-Terrarium with Horse dung or decomposing grass clippings (both hold moisture well, so it doesnt seem like I would need much of anything for humidity.)
-inoculation by syringe from wild mushroom spores.

Now this is where I get confused. If someone could answer these questions for me, or tell me if this method has a chance to work, this would be helpful:
-Sterile technique, how much should I follow as far as introducing the spores to the horse dung? Should I use jars for the substrate, or does it matter?

-Is the temperature of growth for these mushrooms different from others? From what I can tell, other than keeping it humid, they seem to grow well in a large variety of temperatures, so it shouldnt matter if Im 50 degrees, or 70 degrees?

Before anyone posts about how I should make sure theyre subbs, I realize that, and I plan to make absolutely sure through multiple methods. One mistake could mean getting very sick or even prove to be fatal and I dont intend to gamble on something like that. Ive been practicing finding them and have read every thread and ID guide I can find on subbs and potential lookalikes.

So, can anyone help me fill in some gaps here? Any help is greatly appreciated.

id suggest looking through the videos on

www.mushroomvideos.com

particularly the pftek and grow some cubs before going with other types of psylocibe mushrooms which are much harder to cultivate.

Grow some cubes and once you have an understanding of how it works move to other types.

I've seen a few vids on cubes already. Unfortunately I'm not in a situation where they grow nearby, or where I can buy them.

Even though I already have the substrate ingredients and everything necessary, I don't have access to a spore print. =\

See the sponsors of shroomery, you can order prints from most of them.

They can be bought online from one of the sponsors. without a print your not going to get anywhere.

If your thinking of picking a wild mushroom and using that for to clone or make a print, its a long process involving agar and petri dishes. Wild mushrooms are most likely infiltrated by bacteria and mould spores.

Which means that you will have to make up petri dishes with agar and grow out on that, and transfer unti you dont have contaminations anymore.

Spore syringes arnt that expensive, theres usually deals where you get 3 for a good price or 1 for free.

As stated above, I'm not really in a position where I can buy them.

I don't have 60 dollars to pay for 4 syringes of spores (shipping included) at the moment, because I'm a college student. I'm also staying in a house where the mail goes through someone else, and if they find I've ordered any kind of syringe or spores, not only will they be suspicious that something is going on, I may very well be asked to leave.

So please, answer the questions I posted, not suggestions of other mushrooms I can grow. I'm aware of the risks of contamination from wild spores, but I'm very willing to keep an eye out and immediately discard any of those tries (even if it's all of them). The whole reason I posted here was so that I could make sure I'm going about this the right way, and I'd appreciate it if the content stayed to what I asked.

The more I'm looking at horse manure substrates, it still looks as though I still have to sterilize them quite a bit, is the pressure cooker still needed?

I'm researching all of this more in depth at the same time, but not very much is coming up.

Are you planning on growing and hiding your set up from people that live with you?
If so horse manure is probably not an option for you, you're worried about how people will react to the mail but not about how they'll react to you preping horse shit in the kitchen?  Do more research, you can't just slap some spores in horse poo and watch it grow.

If you used the search feature you would find that hpoo doesn't require a pressure cooker but is instead usually soaked in a pot of very hot water inside a pillow case on a stove, boiled in quart jars, or etc; at least two things that, as you pointed out you wanted to prevent, would be questionable to those in your dorm.

If on the other hand you want to keep it on the downlow, than the PF tek and a small FC are for you.

Either way you'll need spores.

As veda_sticks said, if you're hoping to use a wild mushroom you need to start with petri's.  If you don't want to do that than you'll most likely fail if it's your first attempt at growing.

You should start with a syringe from a vendor and maybe consider invitro in a closet.  My first syringes from THE were in a nondescript box so unless they open your mail no one should know what it is.  Go to the vendor forum and ask about packaging.  Will a USPS flat rate box draw attention???

Well, it's not a dorm, it's a house, and a large one. I'm going to school in a small community, so it also has a large lot with a rarely-used basement. I can find things around to cook with, I don't need use of the kitchen. The mail comes to a PO box, or their mailbox, which I can't check because I'm not home all day.

The reason they would care is because I'm related to them, and they know my parents. Since I'm living under their roof, I'm sure they wouldn't care if they looked into a piece of my mail. They would also want to know why I'm getting it, and how much it costs, since I'm on a tight budget. Very uncool, but it's how it is.

Since I have a weird schedule, and I'm fairly free to do what I want, so I can find a way to hide the mushrooms.

Also I did use the search feature, and I've been searching through threads all day about trying to cultivate subs on horse feces. Seems like most people don't grow them, they pick them, or grow them in their garden, so there's little information that I could find. I'm not saying it's not there, but I have been searching.

I understand what you guys are saying, that a beginner should start with the BRF cakes (PFtek) and Cubes because it's easier for a beginner to learn, and it teaches important techniques involved in other grow methods.

In fact, I would be totally okay with this if there were a safe (cheap) way to get the spores without rousing any suspicion. I would much prefer it.

I'll do some research for getting spores as well, but I still would like to know the alternatives in case I can't find a viable option. If anyone has grown subbs before, I'd greatly appreciate the help.

Even if I fail, that's not the problem, I'm doing this for something to do in my spare time as well. If it doesn't work out, then all I've done is learned what I might be able to do different next time. The whole reason I posted was because it seems difficult to find information on these methods for subb cultivation.

Anyway, I will look more into spore syringes. I'll also browse the Vendor forum and see what they have to offer.

ive tried it acouple times...  started to see slowly colonize then boom cotamed. every time. i didnt have the patience to keep trying but who know maybe youll have more luck than me.

you could try pulling out a the "good" parts and let that colonize. and repeat untill you get all the contams out. but idk if that would even work. and if it would it would take a LONG time. and at that point you should probably be using agar dishes.

that said... can't you buy just a print on piece of tinfoil?  does it get any more discrete than an envolope?

if you cant get that in the house your not gonna be able to hide a grow op of any kinda IMO.

It's not so much once it's in the house that I'm worried about. It's a huge house, and there's more than one family living here.

It's just the mail.

In any case, I'm still looking around. I took a look at THE, they seem pretty decent, and it wouldn't be too weird of a charge...

Dr watson, when you ordered it, was the return address to a person? or to Anti-hangover? I couldn't find what they send other than it says nothing about mushrooms.

I would feel more comfortable doing this if that piece of information was given. Then at least I could come up with a viable story.

This has been said many times over if you arent the only family living there dont grow.  Hiding it from anyone isnt a good move.  Not to mention the shit everyone else would get in if something bad happened.

The return address said simply

T.H.E.
PO BOX
City, St

I'm leaving the actual address blank on purpose but you get the idea.

You shouldn't be hiding it though.  It sucks to have to wait but really it's better that you do.  Or just grow something nonactive

Thanx Watson.

I realize I shouldn't be hiding, but who grows mushrooms that ISN'T hiding it (In the US). I can't really explain how big this house is or the situation I'm in...I basically have a whole 3 bedroom wing on my own... There's lots of places to do this discretely, and if worse comes to worse, I'll bury it w/ a light on a timer. I'm on like a 2 acre lot with plenty of empty cars that haven't been driven in 10-20 years.

I have no intention of getting caught, or letting anyone find out about it, if I do indeed decide to go through with this. I'll make absolutely positive every detail is worked out.
