Hollow stems(much less wieght), controllable ?
    #876786 - 09/11/02 07:34 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hey gang,

I was wondering if it hollow stems come with a strain or is it the growers fault? Mushrooms with hollow stems weigh much less, so i hear. So can hollow stems be controlled?

Thanks!
Fd

All of the P. cubensis that I have seen had hollow stems.

I find sometimes some of em are way more hollow than others. Some are real thick with a very small hollow hole up through the stem. Some have a HUGE hole up through the stem.
I believe it has something to do with humidity.
My buddys been working with the same strain for bout 2 years and it varies with it.

the GT's my friend grew were pretty damn meaty in the middle. Some strains like treasure coast, though.. are VERY hollow in the stem.

To answer the question
the stem hollowness (or lack thereof) is primarily dependent on the strain.  I am sure with some tinkering with environmental factors you could shift it a little in one direction or the other. If, however, you don't like hollow stems, then your best bet is too do strain comparisons.  One environmental factor that does seem to play a larger role in stem length is CO2 concentrations, so maybe having greater air exchange (too mimick  mother nature) would provide you with shorter, possibly more dense stems.
  some conjecture here

Mickey?? all the cubensis you`ve seen have hollow stems?? that`s strange.
All the cubensis I`ve grown have good solid thick stems.

They are still technically hollow.

From FIELD GUIDE TO THE PSILOCYBIN MUSHROOM written by F.C.Ghouled:
The reader has a simple task to preform in order to locate the most
common psilocybin mushroom. He must search cow pastures after rain storms
during those months in which the temperature is between 65 to 85 degress
Fahrenheit. Only those specimens which occur on manure, turn blue when damaged
and have a hollow stem need be considered. There is no chance for error.
Peace

I have seen plenty of meaty stems and plenty of thin stems. They were all hollow even if the meaty ones had a very small hole.

Ok I understand what you`re trying to say.
I guess even a tiny hole makes it hollow, makes sense.
Oh no, that changes everything.

Hehehe.  I just didn't want some newbie to read this thread, think there actually are cubensis out there without hollow stems, and pick the wrong thing out in the field.

Peace

Im not sure this is correct - from descriptions ive read by Stamets and Singer there is no mention of whether the stem is hollow or solid.
The hollowness is strain orientated to a degree, but large fruits often exhibit it. Golden Teachers, Argentineans had very thick meaty stems without hollowness - Tcs and Mazas have very hollow stems in all the isolates ive grown out

in my experince. (sorry for spelling) I have found the B+ leave the leaste amount of hollow stems. I think it mostly depends on your nuterients though. Just my opinion though.

Wow thanks for all that info guys! I guess it goes from strain to strain....

What i ment by hollow was that the walls of the mushroom stem are very thin. If the walls are thick and there is a small hole down the center i wouldn't exactly call it "hollow".

Thanks again!
Fd
