Cactus seedlings and sunlight?

I've been experimenting with different methods to get my cacti seedlings to grow their best. I kept putting them some places and they would turn yellow and other places they would turn red. Even sometimes in the shade outside they would start to turn red. Now I have some at a window with mostly shade and they seem to be doing alright.

I recently put some of them at a window that gets allot of sunlight and I just put a thick paper towel over them and they seem to be doing great. The yellow ones are turning back to green and the red ones also. The little spines are even standing straight up. They look like they are loving it and growing more steady than in other spots.

Is this a bad thing to keep it at a sunny spot like that? Even with such good shade cloth? Will they continue to do so well? or will they burn pretty soon? If I moved them outside could I put them in a sunny area with shade cloth? If so is that better than total shade without shade cloth?

put them under flouros, seedlings cant stand much hard light

The problem is I already have an HPS light going to add flouros it's to expensive. I've also noticed that they seem to grow much hardier with natural light. I just haven't been able to figure out whether they are better off in total shade or partial shade with paper towel as shade cloth.

In total shade they do alright but don't seem to show the hardy growth that they do since I've just moved them to a window with partial sunlight and shade cloth. I'm just worried that this might be a bad idea long term. I'm checking them frequently. If I see any signs of burning I'll move them immediately.

wrong
go to home depot, get urself a t8 fixture, a 6500k and a 2700k bulb. do not buy thr grow light flouros, regs put out more light

that setup is plenty for cacti seedlings, salvia, and a variety of others to grow that dont need as much light

this will cost u 25-35 altogether, and barely any for electricity

It's not the initial cost I was worried about it was electricity bill. I had 3 small cfl flouros going along with my HPS light and 1 month it almost cost 50$

I'll look into the lights your talking about it's probably cheaper. It'sd just now that the weather is getting warmer I'd rather use natural light. I have my Salvia Plants in a 75% shadey location and they seem to be loving it. I just need to keep experimenting where my cacti seedlings do best. As I mentioned before I have noticed much better growth with natural light rather than HID or Flouos.

I'm gonna save the flouros for the winter. I just need to figure out if it's better to keep them in full shade rather than partial sun with shade cloth but I guess I'll learn soon eneough. The first signs of burning I
ll be sure to move them. Thanks

Ummm... 3 'small' wattage CFLs would be what? 60 total watts? Were you running them 24 hours or what?

Yes actually I was. I didn't have a timer and I was trying to keep MJ plants in veg stage during the winter.

You could just use the lighting systems during the winter and let the plants enjoy the natural sunlight during the summer. My P. alba had a bad case of spider mites while it was inside but as soon as I placed in outside the mites disappear overnight! Gotta love ladybugs and lacewings!

I've just checked my trays that I've left at the sunny window with thick paper towels and double folded toilet papers as shade cloth and after 2-3 days there most of the Bridgesii, Panchanoi, and L Williamsii have all turned a solid green. They have lost there red and yellow tinting.

I'm guessing that inside at a window where the temps don't scorch the seedlings they will continue do do great. I'm also guessing If I moved them outside and did the same thing they would burn. So it looks like I found a good location for a few of the trays.

Since they won't all fit there I'll have to keep the rest in complete shade outside. I'll keep you updated on the success. If I see them changing back to red I'll be sure to move them immediately.

Well, I noticed the columnar seedlings like the window with shade cloth but the Lophs are much more sensative. They started to redden So I moved them quickly to a shaded window.
