Uncomfortable Meditation
    #8295839 -

I was wondering how some of you might conquer this problem. When I sit cross-legged on the floor in a standard meditation position, after about 10 minutes my back really starts to ache. I don't know what to do about this because it is very distracting and i don't want to sit with my torso all slouched over.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had this same problem during the first year that I meditated. You might want to try the seiza position. It's ideal for tall lanky americans such as myself :smirk:

You could always sit cross legged with your back against a wall

gently practice keeping a straight back all day long, never severe, always gentle. then use that natural straightness in meditation - nothing stiffer.

Im lanky too and my back used to ache so bad meditating all the mental relaxation in the world would not take away the uncomfortableness of it.

Then i bought a Zafu & meditation mat

Im sure a bench as appleo suggested would be great although i never tried one, i sit in half lotus on a zafu and when i stand up after my legs feel a bit shaky but asanas help alot for circulation, i think lotus position helps meditation so much because the blood from your legs goes to your head?

I sometimes do half lotus then stand & meditate or walk & meditate for a bit, its a good way to start bringing meditation into your daily life aswell.

But yeah get that ass up off the ground and your spine will thankyou forever.

Ass up, knees down.

(you can fold a towel 3/4 times under your bum and lay another one on the floor but youll find they eventually just crush & dont spring back)

:peace:

You could always meditate lying down.

Sit in an easy chair if laying down makes you sleepy.

Yea, sit in a chair. Don't rest your head, it can cause dullness. Sit in a position that you're used to and comfortable with. Sometimes pain can be a projection of your minds unwillingness to sit still.

You could try focusing on the pain sensations--make that your object of meditation. I do this with my legs, which are the first things to give me pain after sitting cross-legged a long time.

BTW, my theory is that any pain can be tolerated as long as you are disciplined enough to remain focused on it. But, the more places it comes from and the stronger it gets, the stronger is the urge to take the easy road by reverting to familiar pain-averse thoughts and then adjusting your body.

Buy a Backjack. Meditators everywhere use them. They used to be about 25 bucks. Otherwise, as said, put you ass at the crack of the wall and it takes some pressure off ones muscles. Also, learn some different asanas and just rotate through them every so often change position. Not every person can sit in vajrasana.

not being able to sit straight comfortably is a different problem than not being able to meditate comfortably.

as a many poeple suggested, cushions, lying down, and moving meditations work just as well.

if you want to be able to sit straight comfortably follow redgreen's advice, and i would add that stretching gently constantly throughout the day will help alot too.

i think there is just as much benifit, if not more in being able to sit up straight comfortably as there is in being able to meditate well.
