Moses was high on drugs: Israeli researcher

JERUSALEM (AFP) - High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

It would just validate the thoughts of many people who believe psychedelics can teach.

Theorizing that moses was high on acacia is probably one of the most feeble attempts at invalidating the bible I've heard of.

i dont think it is showing psychedelics can teach
more like psychedelics can allow 1 to be easily coaxed into a false reality
the same way charles mansin got those chix to kill people 4 him

It's just something funny to think about. Even if he was tripping balls, that doesn't mean that he didn't actually find Yahweh.

How on earth can you possibly be a Christian and a psychonaut at the same time?

i actually believe that too. and when i say god i mean essentially a higher being, not exactly the same picture that modern baptists give. iv had a few religious...encounters while tripping.

I fail to see how they are mutually exclusive.

No matter if it was completely proven without a doubt and shoved in Christians faces to see, they would never believe it.

IMO Christians are brainwashed from a young age to believe the bible with a consequence of going to hell if not believing in it.

Check out on youtube evangelical brainwashing kids, its horrible...

But on topic, I would definitely agree that he probably was on a hallucinogen... trees/bushes do look like they are on fire when I'm shroomin.

Just crap. That is a baseless and inflammatory comment with absolutely nothing behind it but an uneducated opinion.

How about the Christians that 'came to Christ' later in life?

So because you see burning bushes on mushrooms it is probable that one of the most well known literary characters in all history was high when he received God's law?

As for uneducated... I suppose you have to believe in the bible to be educated??

As far as I'm concerned having "faith" is not an indication of education...

There you go, did your hole deeper, jackass.

So all Christians must believe that the Earth is only six thousand years old because...?

You have any references aside from an image and fundamentalist coloring book that would add to the validity of your question?

The westboro baptist church carries signs like 'thank god for ieds'

I'm in the military, so
you think I agree with them too?

Take your weak attacks against Christianity to the spirituality forum.

Your suppositions couldn't be farther off towards what I said in regards to you being uneducated.
