Lyle Lovett has been unfairly typecast into texas swing and coutnry... but he really dips his toes into almost every major genre: soul, R&B, gospel, blues and the songwriter ballad here and there. almost all present in his most acclaimed album "Pontiac".

the entire album is a good listen from front to back. now it isnt a party album, or a house cleaning album, but it definitely is a drink-sippin, sittin on the back porch on a summer dusk type of album.
by no means is it a concept album, but there are common themes from song to song.
the first song seems to be a very serious, melancholy, somber tune, but it is rather whimsical in the lyrics and at the crescendo of the song it gets somewhat lively and puts you in the proper mood for the rest of the album.
Im not going to go song by song here, but rather pick out the gems, because with this album there is no artistic statement, but rather a frame of mind... a door into the thought process of Lyle which is often a dry wit counterbalanced with goofy sentiments, all piled atop a groove that only he can attain.
not to mention that the album is masterfully recorded.

"she's hot to go" - very funny. the song is a narrative about the build up of a moment where he approaches what appears to be a very attractive woman from behind but when she turns around "my eyes could plainly see... she was ugly from the front! i said ugly ugly ugly ugly" with full episcopal harmonies.
"black and blue"
"she's no lady" (shes your wife).

all of the tunes with the exception of two or three are very witty. Everytime I listen to the album I get a few chuckles.
and to all the people out there that dont "like country or rap" might as well just simmer in their ignorance for the rest of their life. it is like saying "I will never like black or hispanic people".
now I understand why you dont like garth brookes or brad paisley, but this album really isnt country, and I garauntee you will enjoy it.
