Oh my god mushmaster. I agree with every band you listed there. Especially Kiss. They apear to me as money grubbers, just out for fame, fortune and women. Also so many people say Eddie van Halen is the greatest guitar player ever, I just don't get it. He seems too goofy and his playing just don't move at all.
A few other bands I could add to that list are.
Lenny Kravits ( seems like he learned to play from a text book, just has
no originality at all, he's all about image)
Creed ( I just wanna gag when I hear this)

I don't think rush is over rated at all. They are a great band and their drummer is astonishing.

the beatles were the first back street boys. they invented the 3 minute pop song. In the sixties, they sang about "all you need is love". Twenty years later they were suing eachother over royalties. Now they are a bunch of sellout yuppies that do "Say No to Drugs" commercials.

Let's see here... Rush isn't overrated. Sure, some of their songs are.. iffy.. but they are pure talent. They are like perfect musicians, virtuosos on their instruments (Geddy Lee! fuck yeah!). I think they should have gotten a singer, though, cause Geddy should have stuck to bass...

KISS is only in it for the money. Gene will straight up tell you that. The music.. isn't all that great. It is good enough, I susposse, but I don't even listen to it anymore...

Aerosmith was once kick ass. Like up to Get a Grip, I susposse. Of course, all their last albums before they completely sold out were barely written by them..... but like Livin' On The Edge remains my favourite song of all time...

TOOL, overrated? Haha. If anything, they are underrated...

AC/DC isn't really overrated, either.. they keep it simple and easy on a purpose, and to continue in that vein for that long is sort of amazing.. I mean, the songs are pretty cool.

Now, it be time to bring up what will be the biggest difference in opinion here.

METALLICA. To consider Load and Reload overrated is bullshit. The songs are fucking amazing. Is it speed metal? No. Does that mean it isn't good? No. Have you ever heard the song The House that Jack Built?! Fucking amazing. It borders on psychadelic..

I mean, Load and Reload are pretty damned good, as long as people don't compare them to their earlier work. If they were interested in continuing in the vein of Master of Puppets and Master of Puppets, they fucking would have, and they would have eventually burnt out and died away.

And Jaymz's vocal work is simply stunning. The best fucking singer in metal, bar none.. (Maynard and Serj come close, of course).

Of course, I won't even get into St. Anger.. it is good enough, I susposse, but I consider it a transisition... if they don't put out a new album in the next two years, though, (it should only be one year before they put out a new one, of course), I will fucking disown them......

The next album will like decide METALLICA's fate. They can stick to being true musicians or they can follow the current trend and fuck it all up.. METALLICA needs to like seriously come back out of the desert, get their act together just like any other band, and kick some serious ass.

yeah, there is a big difference between "bad" and "overrated"

I think Nirvana was overrated, but I don't think they were a bad band at all. Indeed, I own all their albumns.

having said that, I think the Grateful Dead is overrated, too.

90% of the people I know who chose to start listening to the dead did so for entirely social reasons. I appreaciate the culture that surrounds the band, but aesthetically, to me anyways, they are just another rock band from the 60's.

Some people listen to music because they like it, aesthetically. Others listen to music to fit in with some social circle, to get laid or get drugs. I find it hard to believe that these plastic hippie yuppie larvae kids really "get" what Jerry was trying to say.

Even Jason said his vocals are way too limited.
Maynard cannot be compared to James.

I think Kirk is a fucking AMAZING guitarist, but I still think they're overrated.

I also think you can't judge Bob Marley by the modern "hippies" that say he's a god. just like Jerry...

Is there anything wrong with that? First off, they didn't invent it, but they did create a new approach. They made some great pop music.

Pop music isn't inherantly evil or bad. There is lots of great pop music, it doesn't necessarily have the technical mastery of some artists, but sometimes it is far more passionate.

Take Nirvana, for example. They weren't necessarily the most revolutionary band, but they were excellent. Kurt Cobain had all the pain and passion of Robert Johnson.

Sure, great sprawling guitar solos can be amazing, but that doesn't mean that simple, three chord rock doesn't kick ass sometimes. There's more than one way to be a great musician.

there's only something wrong with pop music when it is created exploiting whatever talent the performer has for as much money as possible. Pop music just happens to be the perfect medium.
People don't have to like it, but they should at least know the difference between real artists who happen to play pop music, and sell-outs who play pop music. (not directed to anyone here specifically)

Okay, fair enough, Eddie doesn't play blues based licks so his style may not be as purely "emotional" as some people would wish, however he was exceedingly innovative with the guitar(especially on the first 4 albums) and changed the way the instrument was approached, ask Hammett (sp?), Vai, Satriani and the rest of those monkees, they'll tell ya :grin:

I can't believe you said the Who. Listen to Live at Leeds and you'll hear simply the BEST LIVE ROCK N ROLL EVER. They were essentially a live band, they never worked as well in the studio.

That said, The Who Sell Out is one of my favourite albums of the sixties.

In my opinion, Endwhistle's the best bass player ever. Keith Moon's one of the best drummers. Townsheands up there as a guitarist, but think bout his composing. And give me Roger Daltrey over Robert Plant any day.

Yes, we will have to agree to disagree, because Jamyz' voice sounds so much fucking cooler.. they really can't be compared, though, because they both have something else going on.

And Jaymz has so much fucking control, it is amazing. Years and years of fucking Bob Rock riding his ass until he got everything perfect, I guess. And Jason can fuck off, cause he isn't all that limited; he has been working on his range for quite some time now.

I'm sorry, I just can't get over how great his voice sounds.. hehe.

Yes, Kirk is one of the fucking best guitarists out there.. I consider METALLICA underated, at least for Load and Reload. I think everyone really rides their fucking asses about it, but they really don't sound that bad. I mean, it isn't fucking speed metal, and maybe it is just because I grew up with that METALLICA, but the sound is so fucking sweet... you can't get better than fucking The House that Jack Built, King Nothing, or fucking Until It Sleeps.. Ain't my Bitch! yeah!

all of my favorite mattalica songs featured mustaine on lead, or they were written by mustaine. Funny thing is, I decided I liked these songs best before I knew mustaine wrote/was involved with them.

Are there actually any METALLICA songs featuring his playing? I know he has credit for like two songs, heh, but I don't think he actually played on them.. unless you have some bootlegs or something..

I actually dug up some demos they did back in '82! in original bassist's Ron Mc Govney's garage.. some pretty cool shit.

Are you guys serious? I don't think any of the bands anyone listed were bad, they all have their good points and bad points. Aren't we forgetting all those pop stars? Britney, Justin, Jennifer, blah, blah, tits, ass, etc. I think we can all agree they suck, but people are obviously buying their music, you hear their bullshit over the radio, on t.v. at work, and so forth. That's the real overrated garbage.

I for one think the Beatles are the greatest band ever. I think too many people equate them with the backstreet boys when this is WRONG! They all came together on their own accord for the music, which by the way was just beginning to get interesting around their time. They have been too BIG of an influence over the music genre to ever be considered bad or overrated. Almost every musician out there owes them a debt of gratitude.

A bunch of the stuff on Kill Em All was credited to Mustaine. I can't give you an exact list because my pothead ass lost the origional liner notes. I'm sure its online somewhere. I was also told he wrote "Call of Cthulu", however the fuck you spell that.

his dependence on the pentatonic. His unwillingness to go minor. His integration of the blues into metal (I'm a neoclassical kinda guy myself). the predictable nature of his solos. His playing lacks edge, because he tends to stay in the safe territory. When he does use an exotic scale, he doesn't articulate it fully, and often plays it slowly.

I dunno, I'm sure he could blow ME away, I'm not saying he's a bad guitarist, I just prefer to listen to others.

Anyway, its prolly good mettalica kicked mustaine out, because Megadeth kicks Mettalica's ass.

Oh, and I really dont mean to pick on your tastes or anything, but I think Hetfield sounds like a redneck jock motherfucker when he sings, definitely not something I want to hear mixed into metal.

Of course, Mustaine sounds like Oscar the Grouch, but I actually like that. It fits the tone of the music, and its very origional.

this list has grown too much into popular bands that you personally don't like.
Overrated, to me, means they get too much credit for what little talent they have.
This has gotten out of hand, and I think some are making judgements because they don't like their music and don't know enough about it to realize how skilled they are (or are not).

Soochi's right, the new pop acts are overrated, but not many people give them a 'talented' label... so it's more of a 'too popular for what little talent they have'.

Personally, I've ripped on bands I hate the music of, but have no idea the real chops or influence they've had.

I looked up it, I think Mustaine helped write four songs on Kill Em All, like two on Ride the Lightning, and maybe one song on Master of Puppets. Just a second, I will pull the website back up quick.. The Four Horsemen, Jump in the Fire, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, Ride the Lightning, and The Call of Ktulu (none off of Master of Puppets, I guess).

I think he like only played a small part in the writing of them, though. Enough to get credit, I guess. Like Call of Ktulu, it was like only the one riff, and like METALLICA made it better without him, by like changing root notes to get movement in it.... and you can hear that fucking riff fucking everywhere. Megadeth has used it in some of their songs, at the end of The God that Failed on the black album they even play a part of it...

A lot of what Kirk is capable of, we have never even heard.. his solos, though, they have a lot of taste, they stick in your head for quite some time.. at least mine, I guess.

Heh, I like his vocals, that is all I can say. It just has this certain sound that really sounds good to me... it could be because like my voice can really get the same tone going for at least awhile (I've been working on vocals sort of, at least stamina so I can sing long enough to match tones and whatnot). Something about that really low Hetfield sound he can get.. hehe.

I like Dave Mustaine's singing as well, it has real character. If you notice, all the truly great bands all have singers that have their own unique sound.. METALLICA, KoRn, Megadeth, Ozzy, IN FLAMES, etc. etc. etc..

So, in conclusion: METALLICA's Load and Reload: extremely underated. Megadeth: extremely underated.

Iron Maiden as overrated? I haven't exactly heard many people giving Iron Maiden their fucking due, and they are still moving on, still making some kick ass music true to their sound...

Iron Maiden is the fucking shit. I actually decided to start referring to them in capitals (only IN FLAMES, METALLICA, and TOOL have that privlege now), but then I would have to go back and rename all of my files, and I haven't gotten around to that, so until I do, capitals pending. :grin:

I think Kiss is defiantely overated. They dont have many good tracks....the reason they are big is because they were the first to put on a show that was run by broadway production team. Phish and Grateful dead are Good but I think they are overated as well...Then again, half of the experience with these bands is incorporated in the staging-lighting and just being part of the show. Grateful Dead didnt really sell that many records but they still draw a HUGE crowd when what's left of them play in concert. I agree with their approach. Im trying to be a live P.A. recording artist and one of my philosophies is, "If the crowd does'nt like what they are hearing, then atleast give them something else to look at. When puting on a show you must try to stimulate as many senses as possible." So they are not musical genious' but still put on a good show.

I think a lot of people are just posting bands they don't like. I don't want to post my list because I know I'll always be offending someone just as you guys probably have offended each other (and me).

One thing is for sure... The Stones, The Beatles, and The Who are certainly not overrated... but it is completely understandable that some people wouldn't like them. I don't think threads like these really work to be honest.

Nirvana
Aersmith
Rolling Stones.... ehh the list can get way too long..

But then there is the Beatles: Over-rated, I dont think so. I hate them, I think their music suck balls and I cant listen to it for more than about 15 seconds, BUT they were a huge influence on some of my favorite artists...

And the Grateful Dead? Defanatly not over-rated, especially these days. And just because there a A LOT of stupid fucking 'hippies' that think its cool to talk about the Dead and LSD, doesn't make them over-rated. I think every member (up to the 80's i guess) deserves a lot of fucking respect....awww... I could go on for hours about the dead...

I think all those lame metal/rap bands that became popular in the late 1990s are totally overated. This includes Korn, Limp Biskit, Kid Rock, etc. Whatever, they suck.

Also, all the music that passes as "punk" these days is quite lame too. Something about really melodic, sappy pop songs played on MTV under the once-rebellious name of punk rock is quite lame in my book.

I'll say that 99% of what is being played on MTV and/or big corporate commerical radio sucks and is over-rated.

Hey, man, I don't consider KoRn overated. They are full of talent. They might have come up with a totally original kind of music that sounds great, is unconvential (at least, until everyone started attempting to leech their sound), and was capable of carrying a lot of meaning and emotion.

If anything, KoRn is underated by all the old fucks that write it off so quickly...

It's probably "Fell in love with a girl" which is lego-riffic. The White Stripes are very good to their fans and aren't the corporate pigs other bands are.

Actually, I did exagerate a little in my previous post. I do like the song "A day in the life" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" is kinda cool. But, Honestly dude, I just really can't get into the Beatles for the most part. I have listened to a lot of it because I know so many people like them, but I just plain do not like most of their shit. Just pecause a shit load of people have the same opinion, does not make that opinion a fact.

How can Phish be overrated? The media almost entirely ignores them. They get zero radio play. Trey is a mad scientist. Phish has written too many awesome songs and they effectively utulize many different styles of music.

The Grateful Dead. Their music is definitely not overrated. But there are too many kids that sport stickers and shirts for reasons other than the music. Not a crime but, I could do without that.

The Beatles. Possibly the most important band in the history of rock? OVERRATED? Hardly.

I don't think Tool is overated. That said, I dislike their music. I know this sounds so cliche, but all their songs sound too much alike, Those fuckers need to diversify. They have their own style: shitty. I liked their first couple songs, but then it got old fast. Dissapointing to say the least.

Metalica they wrote some good songs. Overrated? Probably.

Soochi has a damn good point. Why are arguing about these bands. Even I'll admit I'd rather listen to Tool than JT or whatever the shit they are playing on mtv these days. MTV and most radio is all about advertising and money and so not about MUSIC.
