this list has grown too much into popular bands that you personally don't like.
Overrated, to me, means they get too much credit for what little talent they have.
This has gotten out of hand, and I think some are making judgements because they don't like their music and don't know enough about it to realize how skilled they are (or are not).
Soochi's right, the new pop acts are overrated, but not many people give them a 'talented' label... so it's more of a 'too popular for what little talent they have'.
Personally, I've ripped on bands I hate the music of, but have no idea the real chops or influence they've had.

I looked up it, I think Mustaine helped write four songs on Kill Em All, like two on Ride the Lightning, and maybe one song on Master of Puppets. Megadeth has used it in some of their songs, at the end of The God that Failed on the black album they even play a part of it...
A lot of what Kirk is capable of, we have never even heard.. his solos, though, they have a lot of taste, they stick in your head for quite some time.. at least mine, I guess.

Of course, Mustaine sounds like Oscar the Grouch, but I actually like that. It fits the tone of the music, and its very origional.
Heh, I like his vocals, that is all I can say. It just has this certain sound that really sounds good to me... it could be because like my voice can really get the same tone going for at least awhile (I've been working on vocals sort of, at least stamina so I can sing long enough to match tones and whatnot). Something about that really low Hetfield sound he can get.. hehe.
I like Dave Mustaine's singing as well, it has real character. If you notice, all the truly great bands all have singers that have their own unique sound.. METALLICA, KoRn, Megadeth, Ozzy, IN FLAMES, etc. etc. etc..
So, in conclusion: METALLICA's Load and Reload: extremely underated. Megadeth: extremely underated.

No, I really believe those bands are talented, but overrated. Except, perhaps for Elton, who is extremely talented and just irritates me.

Iron Maiden as overrated? I haven't exactly heard many people giving Iron Maiden their fucking due, and they are still moving on, still making some kick ass music true to their sound...
Iron Maiden is the fucking shit. I actually decided to start referring to them in capitals (only IN FLAMES, METALLICA, and TOOL have that privlege now), but then I would have to go back and rename all of my files, and I haven't gotten around to that, so until I do, capitals pending.

AC/DC?! The father's of metal...if anything there under-rated for the world they opened up...most over-rated band of all times is sooooo blink-182...some people actually call it punk : /

im gonna just throw this out and see how it goes. i think that green day was/ is way over rated. they brought with them a supposed punk revolution? more like a pop revolution. and about the whos pop thing...pop isnt always bad, but when refering to greenday, my opinion is that it is bad.

Eh.... i consider Black Sabbath the founders of metal. Although AC/DC certainly played a large part. But I claim loyalty to Black Sabbath. .

I think Kiss is defiantely overated. They dont have many good tracks....the reason they are big is because they were the first to put on a show that was run by broadway production team. Phish and Grateful dead are Good but I think they are overated as well...Then again, half of the experience with these bands is incorporated in the staging-lighting and just being part of the show. Grateful Dead didnt really sell that many records but they still draw a HUGE crowd when what's left of them play in concert. I agree with their approach. Im trying to be a live P.A. recording artist and one of my philosophies is, "If the crowd does'nt like what they are hearing, then atleast give them something else to look at. When puting on a show you must try to stimulate as many senses as possible." So they are not musical genious' but still put on a good show.

i agree with all of those, but would like to point out that rush is not only overrated, but they suck.
the white stripes have rush beaten by light years as far as sucking and being overrated goes.
another band i think of, when i think of overrated bands, is widespread panic.

I think a lot of people are just posting bands they don't like. I don't want to post my list because I know I'll always be offending someone just as you guys probably have offended each other (and me).
One thing is for sure... The Stones, The Beatles, and The Who are certainly not overrated... but it is completely understandable that some people wouldn't like them. I don't think threads like these really work to be honest.

My list of over-rated bands-
Nirvana
Aersmith
Rolling Stones.... ehh the list can get way too long..
But then there is the Beatles: Over-rated, I dont think so. I hate them, I think their music suck balls and I cant listen to it for more than about 15 seconds, BUT they were a huge influence on some of my favorite artists...
And the Grateful Dead? Defanatly not over-rated, especially these days. And just because there a A LOT of stupid fucking 'hippies' that think its cool to talk about the Dead and LSD, doesn't make them over-rated. I think every member (up to the 80's i guess) deserves a lot of fucking respect....awww... I could go on for hours about the dead...
