Jay-Z + The Beatles = The Grey Album

This has been doing the rounds on the net recently, so I thought I'd post it here too in case anyone hasn't heard about it. Basically DJ Dangermouse has taken the a capella version of Jay-Z's The Black Album and combined it with (new beats) and samples from The Beatles' The White Album. to create The Grey Album.
It's caused a bit of a stir apparently, here's some blurb from the site:
Quote:
DJ Danger Mouse's recent Grey Album, which remixes Jay-Z's The Black Album and the Beatles White Album, has been hailed as a innovative hip-hop triumph. Despite that and the fact that only 3,000 copies of the album are in circulation, EMI sent cease and desist letters yesterday to Danger Mouse and the handful of stores that were selling the album, demanding that the album be destroyed.
"EMI isn't looking for compensation, they're trying to ban a work of art," said Downhill Battle's Rebecca Laurie.
"Special interests, including the major labels, have turned copyright law into a weapon," said Downhill Battle co-founder Holmes Wilson. "If Danger Mouse had requested permission and offered to pay royalties, EMI still would have said no and the public would never have been able to enjoy this critically acclaimed work. Artists are being forced to break the law to innovate."
The Grey Album has been widely shared on file sharing networks such as Kazaa and Soulseek, and has garnered critical acclaim in Rolling Stone (which called it "the ultimate remix record" and "an ingenious hip-hop record that sounds oddly ahead of its time"), the Boston Globe (which called it the "most creatively captivating" album of the year), and other major news outlets.
You can download the whole thing (with 192kbps bitrate) here.
I'm quite impressed with it, the highlight of the album for me has to be 'What more can I say'. In fact, if you're only going to download one song to get an idea of the album, I would suggest that one.
-------------------- The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame". In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience. And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him. "Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I'm not very excited by this album (What more can I say and December 4th are nice though), but I recommend checking out the Danger Mouse & Jemini The Gifted album released last year.
It's called 'Ghetto Pop Life' and was released on the UK label Lex. Definitely one of the top hip hop albums of 2003. It's downloadable from bleep.com (and slsk of course).

If I'd never heard the Beatles before listening to that, it'd be mediocre at best. Since I have definitely listened to the Beatles, that is horrible.

I actually like rap, but that doesn't sound too good. The quality isn't even that good.
Jay-Z's voice comes off very monotonous to me.

Jay-Z is as poppin' today, as The Beatles were in their day, and i'm a fan of both artists. but i'm dissapointed in Danger Mouse. it should be called The Brown Album, because he shat upon great music. my little sister could do better, ...but that's just my opinion.

If "What more can I say" is the highlight I will pass on the rest. It is bad enough that I have to listen to classics set to Hummer commercials or Jimi Hendrix selling Pepsi. This butchery is even worse than that. What the Beastie Boys did on Paul's Boutique with some Beatles samples is pretty tight.

I like rap, and I like the Beatles...
But i also like Sushi, and I like ice cream... doesn't mean I should mix the two.

I just got done listening to it. Moment of Clarity is my favorite track so far. Wish he had sampled some more Beatles vocals. But great fucking work. I can't believe EMI is throwing a hissy fit over this. It's not like DJ Dangermouse is looking to make profits off it. It's probably just something he put together in his apartment and wants to share. Does anyone know whether Roc a Fella has made any comments?

A friend of mine actually just gave me a copy of this and I thought I'd see if there were any previous posts on it before making a new one. I actually am kind of enjoying it. I love the beatles and have forever (and this really doesn't have much to do with why I enjoy the album), and although I don't like rap, I do like hip hop, which in my opinion you have to have intellegence and originality to create and I feel Jay-Z has both of those things. Does the album do justice to the work of the beatles? No....Does it do justice to Jay-Z's original production and Rick Rubin's skill as a producer? No...but for what it is I think it's really enjoyable and I've enjoyed listening to it. No one respects and appreciates the work of the beatles more than me. They were truely gods in the world of music and they changed the entire world on more levels than anyone will ever realize, but I don't think something as silly as an album made by taking lyrics from Jay-Z and samples from one of the beatles albums takes away from anything...if anything it's a testament to the far reaching influences of the beatles. Just approach the Grey Album with an open mind. Realize that although maybe it's not the best thing since sliced bread it's not necissarily trying to be. The concept is interesting and the music is enjoyable. Realize that there is a certain level of skill and creativity that is needed to produce something like the words Jay-Z uses, and the mixing DJ Danger Mouse does... Anyway this is just my rant I thought I'd post since I've been enjoying this stuff for a few days and I thought maybe someone else might too, which was the original intention of this post. I'm not saying my opinion matters...Peace and Much Love EVERYONE. I do think that the cover is a bit misleading and definately an overstatement to what this album is...a simple grey cover with black or white letters would have been more tasteful, since it really didn't have the backing of either party.

you know listening back over the black album there's a lot of songs I like better as done on the grey album....like encor for instance, not that the black album version is bad, and I'm really suprised too, because it's produced by kanye west I think (or at least this is what i've been lead to believe and it sounds like his style) and I love Kanye. Really there's a lot of songs I prefer the grey album version, even if I like the version on the black album.
Like for instance, I fucking love 99 Problems and the way it's done on the black album, I mean it's fucking Rick Rubin, producers don't get much better than rick rubin, but the way it's put to helter skelter on the grey album just gets into me.
I don't know.....
