YA's album of the week #2

I decided this week to increase the "comfortability zone" by picking an album that is more consumable than last weeks. However, it probably will not be liked or even listened to due to stigma about the artist and his genre. but I am doing this more for me than you guys and only hope that someone out there actually listens.
Pontiac by Lyle Lovett
Quote:
Chart success Pontiac reached number 12 on Billboard's chart for Top Country Albums, and 117 in the Billboard Hot 200.
[edit] Critical acclaim Pontiac was ranked as 201 in the list of the "500 Best Albums of All-Time" by the German edition of Rolling Stone. [7] The album was also cited as one of the top 100 albums of the 1980s by the Italian magazines Il Mucchio Selvaggio [8] and Velvet.[9] The album is also one of 300 listed in the book, 50 Years of Great Recordings[10] and appeared at number 33 the Village Voice's list of top albums for 1988.[10]
sorry, I have no audio clip or anything to offer this week... but seriously, go listen to the album. Lyle Lovett has been unfairly typecast into texas swing and coutnry... but he really dips his toes into almost every major genre: soul, R&B, gospel, blues and the songwriter ballad here and there. almost all present in his most acclaimed album "Pontiac".
All songs written by Lyle Lovett
"If I Had a Boat" – 3:06 "Give Back My Heart" – 3:00 "I Loved You Yesterday" – 2:56 "Walk Through the Bottomland" – 4:11 "L.A. County" – 3:17 "She's No Lady" – 3:13 "M-O-N-E-Y" – 3:15 "Black and Blue" – 3:58 "Simple Song" – 3:17 "Pontiac" – 2:24 "She's Hot to Go" – 2:30
the entire album is a good listen from front to back. now it isnt a party album, or a house cleaning album, but it definitely is a drink-sippin, sittin on the back porch on a summer dusk type of album. by no means is it a concept album, but there are common themes from song to song. the first song seems to be a very serious, melancholy, somber tune, but it is rather whimsical in the lyrics and at the crescendo of the song it gets somewhat lively and puts you in the proper mood for the rest of the album. Im not going to go song by song here, but rather pick out the gems, because with this album there is no artistic statement, but rather a frame of mind... a door into the thought process of Lyle which is often a dry wit counterbalanced with goofy sentiments, all piled atop a groove that only he can attain. not to mention that the album is masterfully recorded.
some of the gems of the album are: "give back my heart" "M-O-N-E-Y" "she's hot to go" - very funny. the song is a narrative about the build up of a moment where he approaches what appears to be a very attractive woman from behind but when she turns around "my eyes could plainly see... she was ugly from the front! i said ugly ugly ugly ugly" with full episcopal harmonies. "black and blue" "she's no lady" (shes your wife).
all of the tunes with the exception of two or three are very witty. Everytime I listen to the album I get a few chuckles. and to all the people out there that dont "like country or rap" might as well just simmer in their ignorance for the rest of their life. it is like saying "I will never like black or hispanic people". now I understand why you dont like garth brookes or brad paisley, but this album really isnt country, and I garauntee you will enjoy it.

alright, so im curious about what it is that makes people not take music reccomendations.
is it laziness? is it ego? is it that you dont care? is it that i am such a huge dickhead about music that you would hate for me to be right?
i just dont get it. atleast last week someone had already heard the album.
would it help if I tracked down a torrent link and put it on here? all i want is one person to give it a listen. just one listen.

Downloading as we speak. I know with threads like these, a lot of people really do go check the artist without posting. I know I do all the time. If I happen to really like the artist right away...which tends to be more on the rare side, I'll post.

I bet you're the guy at the party who takes command of the ipod all night. Picking songs to fit the perfect mood of the evolution of the party. Then you talk to girls and are like, 'yea you know this song...'

the reason no one takes your recommendations is because you act like you're the end-all critic of good taste. stop being so pretentious and people will start listening. saying stupid shit like "you need to listen to this or you haven't lived" is aggravating, and it makes me want to avoid you out of spite.
and "all i want is for one person to listen" is ridiculous. play it for your mom or something.

I'm busy enough listening to the music I already have and looking into artists that have been on my "listen to these guys" list for a while. One of these days I'll listen to Mr. Bungle, just be happy you'll get me to do that much.

so toddo, did you give Lyle a listen?
also, I completely realize that I am a pretentious asshole when it comes to music.. but frankly, I have earned it. I spend more time playing music for people than I do mixing music for bands.
and no I am not that guy that takes control of the iPod. in fact I dislike iPods all together. but I will spend hours making fun of peoples musical choice.
I cant count how many times I have been talking to someone about band X and they say "I havent really listened to them" with growing disinterest for the conversation, or "I dont really like them much". then I will play a phenomenal track from that band, and guess who comes rushing over to ask "who is that you are playing?".
I understand (to some degree) the need to "be the first to find the music"... but people seriously dont take music recommendations because they truly believe that they are in the know about every great band. I find atleast one new band a week that blows me away, and I find out they have been around, or already broken up, for years.
there are a few bars in town where the bartenders hand me money when I walk in, to play the jukebox. I survey the crowd, and pick a playlist that will increase liquor sales. im like the ice cream guys fromCity Slickers.... how they could name the perfect match of ice cream for any meal.

torrents suck nowadays, for me at least, so unless someone uploads it i won't listen to it. although, maybe in the morning i'll use rhapsody's free trial to hear it
also, i forgot to tell you, i listened to last week's mr. bungle album. interesting, as i know i've heard it before, but it's definitely not something i'd ever put on
