Is there an interest is subtitles for RRs DVD?
    #7838285 - 01/06/08 06:03 AM (16 years, 26 days ago)

So, I have some past experience making subtitles for TV series.

Would there be an interest in Spanish subtitles for RRs DVD?

I'm surprised there isn't now considering Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in this country. I can certainly see a need for many languages including French, although I will admit that I don't know what options are on the DVD at this point. Maybe they're already there. Anyone?

Anyway, this is really not the appropriate forum for this discussion, so I'm going to move this to the Sponsors forum.

Yes of course there is! If you want to make RR's video more popular in non-English speaking countries... Try to speak English in Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Spain, Italy, France (countries I've visited) - you should be glad if they understand "what's your name?"
Spanish, German and French are obvious choices for subtitles.

This is certainly possible. I own DVD's containing different subtitles. I even got a few containing different soundtracks (dubbed voices).

My DVD production software can produce up to 23 channels for subtitles in that many languages.  The problem is the economics of hiring certified intrepreters, and then the problem of exactly where on the screen is expendable and can be covered up with the writing.  Already, all measurements are shown on screen in English and Metric units at the bottom.  The subtitles would have to be across the top, and that's often where the action is.

No need for certified interpreter. My native languages are English and Spanish (I'm English but I was born and went to school in Spain).

If you find the space to put the subtitles, I'll start working on them. I'll even do it (nearly) free of charge. A little box from you with a copy of the DVD and a few filter disks/injection ports and some other little annoying things I can't find here (like a few tyvek envelopes) would be more than enough payment for me.

I'll start doing subs for the demos on youtube and email you them so you can check me out for quality.

The biggest problem I'll find is finding a word to translate for casing. All the Spanish speaking cultivators I know use the word casing even when speaking in Spanish.

Many English words have migrated into other languages and also the other way around.  If you're interested in this, I may hit you up on my recycling DVD, so they can be put in at the beginning.

Let's Grow Mushrooms! is replicated from a glass master that I paid to have produced.  This ensures that each DVD is the same quality as the original.  In order to add subtitles at this point, I'd have to spend a fortune to have a new glass master made, essentially producing the DVD all over again. Retail stores that have started buying the disk set like Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com would require re-submission with a new UPC code for the updated version, and it would be another six months of 'approval processes' before they started placing orders. At this time, the costs are simply too high, and I just received another shipment of 10,000 disks, so we're not likely to run out before I get the next DVD produced.

I'm leaning heavily towards making the next project a book, with an enclosed DVD to show the lab parts.  I'm not sure there's enough market demand to produce the entire book and DVD in multiple languages, but I'll definitely look into it.  Thank you very much for the offer.

Niblin, I believe there are websites where you can submit and upload subtitles to. A Spanish-speaking person could go to that site, download the subtitles, pop their Let's Grow Mushrooms DVD in their computer DVD drive and have the subtitles they need. Would be better than nothing for someone who didn't understand English, I suppose, even if the translation was scrawled across the bottome of the screen. This would only work if they played the DVD in the computer, not a standalone DVD player, though.....

What might be better than subtitles is recorded voice. With all the effort it would be to put in subtitles, I could easily shut off the audio track channels that hold the narration, and insert the correct audio file in its place, using Adobe Encore.

Often, there's writing on the top and bottom of the screen, so any subtitles would cover at least something else up.

another option, althow maybe not as pleasing, would be to have a little booklet provided, with each section and the translation. They could read the booklet and then watch/pause video.

also for your next dvd couldn't you save money and make one dvd master(normal dvd), and then save a copy to your hard drive. From the hard drive you could then make your replications avoiding the dvd entirely, this could also speed up your replication process. If you were inclined to make them yourselve that is

That wouldn't be replication, it would be duplication and doesn't have near the quality. I already have the entire DVD digital master on three separate hard drives, one of which is in a safe deposit box at the bank. From my hard drive, they carved the glass master, which is then used to make the DVDs. It's a more expensive process, but delivers the best results. I have a DVD burner that will burn 16 DVD's at a time at 32X speed, but I don't use it. I wanted the higher quality of replication, and I wanted full color offset printing on the disks and covers. To get that, I had to have them professionally made.

I've just about decided for sure that the next release is going to be a book, with attached DVD. There's only so much that I can cover in video format, and things like fruiting parameters that could take hours to cover on film for the various species, is simply not suited to the video format.

I'm sold^^^ A book/ DVD combo would be phenomenal! A section of habitat/ growth parameters and pictures of agar growth etc would be great. What kind of subjects are you looking at in the future? outdoor beds? microscopy? Or is it a secret?

Hell, I'd even do the voiceovers for you. I wouldn't mind appearing in the credits of one of your DVDs.

Anyway, I'm working on the subs for the youtube vids atm.

Let's Grow Mushrooms! has quite a bit of agar pictures already. I'm leaning towards making the recycling book/dvd focused more on the actual growing projets, picking up where Let's Grow Mushrooms left off. There will be more on fruiting parameters, contamination, greenhouse construction and humidification, and bulk substrates. I have a mini-microscopy course already filmed that really won't be appropriate for the recycling dvd, so I might just throw it up on youtube one of these days.

Or just add it to the extras section of the DVD.

All important points, and all measurments are subtitled at the bottom of the screen.  Every word is not.  I decided against that due to the cluttering of the screen it causes.  You could probably watch with the sound off and get the point, since everything is demonstrated.

Amazon is back down to just one left again. http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Grow-Mushrooms-Marc-Keith/dp/B0011ZJ53G/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1200079263&sr=8-1
