Which method is really for newbies?
    #779785 - 07/27/02 09:41 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Ok I was all jacked up to start this pf tek project, now I'm not so sure. I just went over the "Why is pf tek recommended for newbies" thread and I'm thinking I better start reading up on caseing. Anybody had success with pf tek because all I'm getting is horror stories?

its very hard to fuck up pk tek, unless your jars get contaminated during innoculation, your pretty much garenteed success. you may run into to problems casing, but even that isnt that hard. if you want to be safe, fruit them as cakes. you can dunk them to increase yeilds rather than casing.

I've read the PF tek is the easiest for newbies, like myself. So far I haven't had any problems. I prepared six 1/2 pint jars and used the oven tek to innoculate with PF classic spores. I hear they are the easiest to get to fruit, because you can start the fruiting in the jars, but their yield is not very good because of so many aborts. My jars are 60%-90% colonized after only 9 days. I've had no problems with contamination so far. I used a pressure cooker to sterilize the substrate. A couple are just begining the fruiting stage. I see nubs of mycelium sticking out from the surface and they're still in the jars. Casing is a little more diificult because it is easier to have contamination problems. I read if you use a non-nutritive casing like vermiculite you can increase yields over cakes without greatly increasing chances for contamination. So you need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. If you follow the PF tek it is very likely you will at least get something, but probably not a large amount. If you use grains and casings you will get a much larger yield , but will increase your chances for contamination and failure.

Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.

Just do the pf tek once or twice to get used to things. Since its hard to fuck up you will at least get something. There is nothing more frustrating then trying bulk and getting nothing but mold cuz you werent prepared. I know from experience
So my opinion is to try it until you're pretty comfortable and understand things, then move on to rye grain or whatever you choose, for the larger yields. just my two cents though, do whatever you are comfortable with. if you choose to do bulk you better read up a lot, cuz there is a lot to consider. peace

the guy who started that thread is pretty much a newbie himself. alot of times pf fails because people get greedy and put in too much brf, in the hopes of more fruits, but there isn't enough oxygen to colonize that much substrate, and the cake stalls out. back when i started it was something like 1/8 cup per cake, now it's 1/4 i think. I havn't done pf in quite some time, so don't quote me. I've been doing grain with filter disks off agar with good success.

If you follow the PF Tek to the letter, you are -GUARANTEED- to succeed. No shit. Do the PF Tek a few times, enjoy the shrooms, learn something, and then try your hand at bulk production.

go through the PF Tek at least once. it's educational, and you'll get something from it. You can screw up other teks, but this one's hard to mess up. once you've grown your own PF style, you'll have some motivation, some shrooms, and some experience. then fool around with other teks.

PF tek is a great place to start, i didnt read anyone elses post on this thread but casing isnt hard! I started with the PF tek thinking i couldnt do anything harder, but while my jars were colonizing i was always reading up stuff on here and i figured casing is VERY easy!

If you think you can try a 100% vermiculite casing. All you have to do is wet the vermiculite and case with it. Here's the LINK!
The casing is way better than cakes but some people should stick with the PF tek their first time around, its your choice. Evaluate your own skills and go from there!

Good luck
Fd

Like Shaw said, I'm a newbie, but found casing easy and will continue to do it. I just tossed out my 1st PF cakes... they finally started to mold after being stalled for almost 2 months.

Try everything once and stick to what works for you!

I think newbies should start out with the chonic tek cause its just as easy as the pf tek and you get shrooms faster plus its less work...no misting or fanning

Go with chronic tek and EQ strain you can't lose

Yes, but IMHO, myco bags are a kit and not really a sustainable TEK.

I did a search on all forums and within this site in the grow teks, what is Chronic tek? If someone has a link that would be really helpful. Thanks

Well people seem to be complaining about the easy ass teks, like the PF tek and loosing all your cakes etc.

PF tek is incredibly easy, no offence but if you cant get the PF tek right then I don?t think this hobby is for you. I mean its so easy I don?t understand how it could go wrong, maybe a few contam problems but those are very easy to prevent even withought a pressure cooker. Its cheap and the instructions and very straight forward.

Just do it like everyone else did, start with PF tek and go from there. If you think you have the skills to try casing your 2nd time around do it, if you don?t then prefect your PF tek.

It?s really not hard, really!
Fd

I don't understand how anyone could have problems with the PF Tek if they follow it to the letter. It should be the newbie's first introduction to cultivation. Every time I used the PF Tek in the past, I always had 100% success. I guess using common sense and following directions is not a gift all people share.

I wish I had a resource like this place back in the day. We had almost nothing except a few books and a few shitty grow texts from dubious BBS sources. Hard to ask a book or text document a question and expect an answer.

Anyway, everyone should feel fortunate to be out of the information dark ages. The internet really has made the world a smaller place.

Well, I've only grown once, and I didn't even get to finish properly, but here's my take on the PF tek.

I did six half pint jars, using the PF recipe. First, I put the vermiculite and the water into a large bowl, and mixed it around until the vermiculite was saturated. Then, I tossed the flour in, and stirred it till the vermiculite was evenly coated with the flour. I was worried it was a little too dry, so I splashed in just enough water to cause the mixture to start clumping, then put it into the jars. Then, I very gently compacted the mix in the jars to get a nice level surface, leaving about a half inch of empty space, which I filled with vermiculite before putting on the lid. Pressure cooked them for about 20 mintes at 15 PSI, left to cool on the stovetop overnight. Next morning I innoculated via the oven tek, and stuck the jars in my incubator.

They colonized perfectly, everything was going great, but a few days before I would have birthed them, my roommate who was initially OK with the grow got paranoid. To make a long story short, he threw away all my spores, the jars, four myco-bags that had only given one flush each, and my BRF and vermiculite while I was at work one day. He adamantly opposes any future growing efforts, so I have yet to try again.

So, unfortunately, I can't tell you how successful I was in terms of yield, but the steps of the tek I did get through seemed very simple. I just used common sense, plenty of sterile practices, and followed the instructions.
