Mushroom cultivation isn`t as difficult as some of you are making it out to be. And then regarding the boiling option, it does work and I`ve never had problems with contamination. only time I got a contaminated jar was because of too much water in the jar. Other than that boiling works like a charm.

For a Raccoon I know, it took learning great patience, getting an AA PC, glove box, Hepa filters, filter disks, creating a small clean place to work in & another suitable for incubation of things before he had any outstanding pins. Then, it took another while to catch on to casings.
After any PF trys, It is wise, once you have another clean viable spore syringe to start small w/grain or Bird seed. Pints are fine, your spore syringe(s) go further, any mistakes are smaller. Try multiples of differing grains or bird seed, or plain white millet with a single syringe. That way, you will find out what works -- best -- for you as it all started from the same syringe.
Once you find a way that works for you, go anywhere or way you want. There was a time when the Raccoon never thought he would have 6 or 8 differing strains colononizing grain jars & differing substrates like gangbusters. Once spawned, colonized & cased --Its fun watching them develope pins & the differances between them & how they grow. Then learning the methods of making prints.

There was a post similar to this going a little while ago. I thought that it, too, brought up many good points and thought I'd post a link.
Happy Shrooming!

Great thread, Moe! And thanks again for sending me the outdoor tek! I think the most helpful thing I picked up from the board when I started was this: Pick a tek and stick with it 'til you have it down. Every Tek on this site works, just be patient and find one that works for YOU!

Im not sure how checking your terrarium constantly will effect anything. Generally everyone will be using perlite which usually keeps humidity at around 95-99% when optimal humidity for cubensis once primordia have formed is 85%-92% - so extra fanning will not only lower co2, but also stabilise the perlite's humidity. Also added air exchange fights contamination because most molds (aspergillus, penicillium, etc) germinate and grow in stagnent and stale air. It may introduce more nasty spores, but it will create and environment where they cannot easily take hold - whereas a chamber that is only provided with air exchange once or twice a day invites nasties. I think the most important lessons for anyone starting out is that cleanliness is paramount - dont cut corners then try and dip your contaminated cakes in bleach. Bleach is no substitute for sterility. Also multispore sucks. Try clones and isolates once you get the pftek and everything down.

What!! You mean to tell me the "bleach tek," isnt the one and only way to grow mushrooms? And on top of that I read a post that claimed any newbie could grow a 1/2 lb of mushrooms a month in a couple months from start up by the same guy that pushes the bleach. Patience and sterile practice is the key to mushrooms, bleach, and the rest of those ideas are just encouraging bad practices for people that dont practice those two things.
