Hello there...
Thanx very much for the post. I am in that situation - my first jars were contaminated and yesterday i innoculated some more. I also tried to make a small cake. I am terribly anxious and dont know why i cant help myself stop thinking that everything will go bad again.
Patience is what I need but its sooooo difficult to convince myself! LOL
Thanx for your caring!

Those are key points you've isolated there, Moe. The one my cat had a problem with was the patience issue. It's understandable to want to check on your jars every 20 minutes (especially since they grow so damn fast!), but jostling them around and changing their environment alot is really ill-advised. I had to put him on an every-other-day check schedule. The 5-day thing is a pretty good idea, too.
I also hear all sorts of newbies say how they got impatient and birthed the cakes too early (my cat did that the first time, too). Here's some advice to all you newbies thinking about trying this: DON'T, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! My cat lost his entire first attempt (12 1/2-pints) because of this and other factors. It's a fact of mushroom life that mycelium cakes tend to slow colonization right toward the very end of the incubation phase.
Anyhow, good post Moe. Happy Shrooming!

Another tip! BE CLEAN! Do not think that boiling your jars is a sufficient way of sterilizing your jars! Some people may tell you it's fine but most will agree with me. I tried boiling twice do to the lack of a pressure cooker and both times I lost numerous jars to contams. (Last time *my second attempt* I decided to start my jars while I was drunk and now I've lost 4 out of my 10 jars) Not a good idea! I bought a used pressure cooker off ebay for $26. It's definatly a small amount to pay to insure your babies will be healthy.

I'd like to add something i've seen a lot of newbies encounter after innoculating their jars.
Taping the holes in your jar lids is a good idea. microscopic mold spores can easily fall in the holes while incubating and when checking the jars. as far as "what about air exchange?" if you are doing the pf cake method, air exchange in 1/2 pint jars is unnessesary. if you are working with grains in pint and quart sizes, go with a 1/4 inch hole with polyfill or a filterdisc if you think they'll need air exchange. I know there are some teks that say not taping the holes is ok, but you may just end up contaminating your entire batch of jars.
another item, do not pack the substrate into the 1/2 pint jars. lightly fill the jar up to about the lower glass lip and put a layer of vermiculite on top. do not pack it down at all. the reason for this is because the mycelium has more channels to grow through the substrate when its not compressed. this will result in faster colonization time.
lastly, if you're doing the cake method and have your terrarium set up, you're going to need something to set each cake on. some teks say to use the jar lid. not a good idea if you want to get another batch of jars going any time soon without buying more lids. instead, use any kind of cleaned plastic like lids to yogurt containers or Pringles can tops.
good luck growing.

I just use folded up aluminum foil to place my cakes on, works great, and i havnt had any problem with the mushrooms growing down toward the foil due to reflected light either.

My advice would be to use tape over the holes of your pf jars, cause if your verm layer is damp or soaked your jars will all contaminate.
