Casing for Newbies?
    #593894 - 03/30/02 05:38 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all.  I have a question regarding why newbies are usually told to do the PF Tek, etc... for their first time.  When is a newbie not a newbie anymore?  I mean seriously, what are you going to learn about casing or other substrates by doing a PF BRF Tek?  If you've had success with BRF cakes, you're STILL a newbie to any other method or substrates.  I just received a response in another thread that said "If you're a newbie, use PF Tek, otherwise throw those babies on dung!"  I have to assume that this means dung (horse from what I've read) works better than PF Tek, yes?

I managed to find Hongus' "Casing for dummies", but he only uses a vermiculite casing in it.Assuming that a person has unlimited time and funds, and has 3 spore syringes of Mazatapek, Ecuador, and Tasmanian, what would be the PREFERRED method of growing these strains?

I've read a bunch about casing, and it doesn't seem that much more difficult than cakes, except perhaps a little more risk of contamination, due to the added steps.  I've also read that whole grain rice is preferred over the flour as in PF Tek, because it gives the mycelium more room to grow.  So maybe a few jars could be PF Tek, a few with whole grain, and some casing done, even if it's divided up into several smaller containers rather than one large one (ie: not putting all your eggs in one basket).

What I'm getting at is if you had to make a suggestion as to the BEST method, one that YOU would use for growing the above strains, what would it be?  Sounds to me like some kind of straw/dung combo, though I have to admit I haven't read everything on the subject of shroom growing.  A person could spend MONTHS reading every post and every resource!

Is there any resource that tells you the best substrate and best technique for each strain?  I've been reading so much over the last 3 weeks that my eyes hurt!

I'll just answer that as long as you already have seen shrooms growing, you can try whatever you want. You may try to case before you try too much things, so that you'll have more experience.
Try to grow your strains on dung if you want the best results. There isn't an ideal substrate for each strain. Cubes are quite similar.
Good luck !

You are not a newbie when you put the PFTek back in the closet where it belongs.
go with grain/casing.
