Hello there...

Thanx very much for the post. I am in that situation - my first jars were
contaminated and yesterday i innoculated some more. I also tried to
make a small cake. I am terribly anxious and dont know why i cant help
myself stop thinking that everything will go bad again.

Patience is what I need but its sooooo difficult to convince myself! LOL

Thanx for your caring!

Those are key points you've isolated there, Moe. The one my cat had a problem with was the patience issue. It's understandable to want to check on your jars every 20 minutes (especially since they grow so damn fast!), but jostling them around and changing their environment alot is really ill-advised. I had to put him on an every-other-day check schedule. The 5-day thing is a pretty good idea, too.

I also hear all sorts of newbies say how they got impatient and birthed the cakes too early (my cat did that the first time, too). Here's some advice to all you newbies thinking about trying this: DON'T, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! My cat lost his entire first attempt (12 1/2-pints) because of this and other factors. It's a fact of mushroom life that mycelium cakes tend to slow colonization right toward the very end of the incubation phase.

Anyhow, good post Moe. Happy Shrooming!

Another tip! BE CLEAN! Do not think that boiling your jars is a sufficient way of sterilizing your jars! Some people may tell you it's fine but most will agree with me. I tried boiling twice do to the lack of a pressure cooker and both times I lost numerous jars to contams. (Last time *my second attempt* I decided to start my jars while I was drunk and now I've lost 4 out of my 10 jars) Not a good idea! I bought a used pressure cooker off ebay for $26. It's definatly a small amount to pay to insure your babies will be healthy.

I'd like to add something i've seen a lot of newbies encounter after innoculating their jars.

Taping the holes in your jar lids is a good idea. microscopic mold spores can easily fall in the holes while incubating and when checking the jars. as far as "what about air exchange?" if you are doing the pf cake method, air exchange in 1/2 pint jars is unnessesary. if you are working with grains in pint and quart sizes, go with a 1/4 inch hole with polyfill or a filterdisc if you think they'll need air exchange.
I know there are some teks that say not taping the holes is ok, but you may just end up contaminating your entire batch of jars.

another item,
do not pack the substrate into the 1/2 pint jars. lightly fill the jar up to about the lower glass lip and put a layer of vermiculite on top. do not pack it down at all. the reason for this is because the mycelium has more channels to grow through the substrate when its not compressed. this will result in faster colonization time.

lastly,
if you're doing the cake method and have your terrarium set up, you're going to need something to set each cake on. some teks say to use the jar lid. not a good idea if you want to get another batch of jars going any time soon without buying more lids. instead, use any kind of cleaned plastic like lids to yogurt containers or Pringles can tops.

good luck growing.

I just use folded up aluminum foil to place my cakes on, works great, and i havnt had any problem with the mushrooms growing down toward the foil due to reflected light either.

My advice would be to use tape over the holes of your pf jars, cause if your verm layer is damp or soaked your jars will all contaminate.

Mushroom cultivation isn`t as difficult as some of you are making it out to be.
And then regarding the boiling option, it does work and I`ve never had problems with contamination.
only time I got a contaminated jar was because of too much water in the jar.
Other than that boiling works like a charm.

For a Raccoon I know, it took learning great patience, getting an AA PC, glove box, Hepa filters, filter disks, creating a small clean place to work in & another suitable for incubation of things before he had any outstanding pins. Then, it took another while to catch on to casings.

After any PF trys, It is wise, once you have another clean viable spore syringe to start small w/grain or Bird seed. Pints are fine, your spore syringe(s) go further, any mistakes are smaller. Try multiples of differing grains or bird seed, or plain white millet with a single syringe. That way, you will find out what works -- best -- for you as it all started from the same syringe.

Once you find a way that works for you, go anywhere or way you want. There was a time when the Raccoon never thought he would have 6 or 8 differing strains colononizing grain jars & differing substrates like gangbusters. Once spawned, colonized & cased --Its fun watching them develope pins & the differances between them & how they grow. Then learning the methods of making prints.

Great thread, Moe! And thanks again for sending me the outdoor tek! I think the most helpful thing I picked up from the board when I started was this: Pick a tek and stick with it 'til you have it down. Every Tek on this site works, just be patient and find one that works for YOU!

Im not sure how checking your terrarium constantly will effect anything. Generally everyone will be using perlite which usually keeps humidity at around 95-99% when optimal humidity for cubensis once primordia have formed is 85%-92% - so extra fanning will not only lower co2, but also stabilise the perlite's humidity.
Also added air exchange fights contamination because most molds (aspergillus, penicillium, etc) germinate and grow in stagnent and stale air. It may introduce more nasty spores, but it will create and environment where they cannot easily take hold - whereas a chamber that is only provided with air exchange once or twice a day invites nasties.
I think the most important lessons for anyone starting out is that cleanliness is paramount - dont cut corners then try and dip your contaminated cakes in bleach. Bleach is no substitute for sterility.
Also multispore sucks. Try clones and isolates once you get the pftek and everything down.

What!! You mean to tell me the "bleach tek," isnt the one and only way to grow mushrooms? And on top of that I read a post that claimed any newbie could grow a 1/2 lb of mushrooms a month in a couple months from start up by the same guy that pushes the bleach. Patience and sterile practice is the key to mushrooms, bleach, and the rest of those ideas are just encouraging bad practices for people that dont practice those two things.

That is so correct! Some of the teks you speak of may have benifits yet they should not be an issue in the first place. If need be, I bet they are handy though, even the bleach tek.

surgical or medical grade masks <----look like doogie houser and shit
fist tank air pump<----5 bucks at wally world
some type of padding<----if you dont want to hear "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

take your bread pan and cut out a hole a about 2inc by 2in
tape your surgical mask, doubled up over the hole

now poke a hole in the top of your grow chamber and feed some pump hose through it and then seal air tight with tape.
put your padding down then your air pump over it, then the bread pan over that and tape the whole thing down to the top of the chamber.

jorge fills his jar that he feeds the pump line into with 50%h202 and 50%h20 and he bought a clear container so he can look through instead of opening it(he covers it with a towel the rest of the time) dont put any exhaust holes in your set up. im not even sure there is a need for this type of set up but my friend has alot of time on his hands.

In reply to:

if you are doing the pf cake method, air exchange in 1/2 pint jars is unnessesary.

untrue.
such jars will most often stall colonizing until the tape is removed.

Yeah, my cat is doing something similar - though he is using filter discs in place of the surgical masks and the padding is a dense-fibrous aquarium air filter material.

The only problem he's noticed is that the perlite dries out faster and needs water added more frequently.

Otherwise, works like a charm!

Really? no exhaust holes, I was always worried about that. But if it works for someone then it's worth a try.
