Re: perlite instead of vermiculit
    #11661 -

I have heard of people using perlite instead of vermiculite that were successful, although I have not tried it myself. Where have you looked? where do you live?

I am pretty shure that you can order vermiculite over the internet. It might be kind of expensive though. If you don't have alot of money you can try the perlite, but vermiculite is recommended. I do not live in europe, but mabey someone that does will tell you wear they got theirs. Good luck.

Sure it works. I`ve done the straight PF-method when perlite used instead of vermiculite. However, the harvest was little. Maybe just beacuse im a newbie. I you can, put some other puffers, it could help.

Hi, I live in Europe too, and it's true that no garden center sells vermiculite over here. Maybe you can try a company that sells building supplies, I know they use vermiculite for heat insulation or something.

I went for the simplest way. I looked in the phone book under "mushrooms", and I found a lab that sells mushroom cultivation kits (shii-take, oysters, etc.) to amateur cultivators, they do some research too. The lady asked me what I was gonna use perlite and vermiculite for, and I told her straight away that I was gonna try to grow psilos. She just smiled and asked me to keep her updated with the results...

Where in Europe?
UK no problems, B&Q and others in garden section for "potting" though I imagine that means something different in the more liberal countries (like not Britain). I know Smart botanics sell the mixture.
Good luck

you can use perlite but you'll need to case the cake to get a decent fruiting.

Hmm..just curious...
How cab one use perlite instead of verm..??
The Verm. _keeps_ the water in the cake whilst perlite is used to "release" water into the air...
Completly different...
I wouldnt recomend using perlite..
But however i havent tried it so im not 100% sure...

i think i will order vermiculit at http://www.kunden.www-pool.de/kakteen-und-pflanzenzubehoer/
but there are two sorts of it
there are 2-3mm and 3-8mm big wich one is the better the fine or the roughly one?

both perlite and vermiculite can hold and slowly release large amounts of water.
vermiculite is not as porous as perlite and so is unsuitable for use in humidifying terrariums.
perlite can be used in cakes and in casings with good results,
but unlike vermiculite, does not trigger pinning.
so a ake made with perlite as a substitute for vermiculite would require casing to fruit but would otherwise be just fine.
i have done it.
