whats the dif btwn perlite & vermiculite

what is the diffrance between vermicultie and perlite? i need to make cakes and it calls for vermiculie but all i have is perlite. should i use it ? same measurments? useing pf tek

i think its possible but you have to take into consideration the fact that perlite is designed to disperse water into the air instead of holding it like vermiculite..

Verm. is brown in color, very similar to grinded up cork.
Perlite is a white rock, used for humid. levels.
So don't use perlite in your substrate. Make sure you use verm. You can buy it at a gardning store. Stuffs pretty cheap.

Actually, I've heard many times not to use Perlite in substrate instead of verm, but I've had more success using it than with verm.
In fact, I've never successfully used verm for ANYTHING. All the successful casings I've done have been with Peat\Perlite, and all the verm casings got cobweb within a week.
All the verm substrates I've used got wet spots that gradually took over the jar, and nothing whatsoever colonized in them.
The only thing about Perlite substrates is that you MUST have the jar sealed tight for the entire colonization process, since perlite releases moisture much faster than vermiculite does, so you're likely to have dry jars within a week if you're using filter disks, or holes in the lid.
I cant explain my constant failure with verm, but I've just learned to go with what works for me. I hear verm is a better idea in general for most.
