Perlite vs. Vermiculite at bottom of casing

What do you guys think.. what should I go with?
I've stocked up on coco... I've realized that pet reptile suply shops are the shroom cultivators mecca... you can find everything you need there (except spores perhaps... :frown:).

Anyway... I'm gonna try out my first casing and I was just wondering what you guys prefer to use underneath the substrate layer... in the Faq and also in the teks there are both possibilaties presented.. which is best?

I like using a sub-base layer to give an extra source of water.

Here's an exhausted tray and it was coir as the sub-base, same layout as this 1st to 3rd flush tray example.



Here's growool as a sub-base tray, 1st to 3rd flush (heat slayed it in the end).



I'd go the vermiculite over the perlite if it's a grain casing. I'd use perlite if it was bulk as a drainage layer.

I'M gonna be casing regular PF cakes... so what do you say to use for this? a layer of pure coco? or perlite? or Vermiculite?
and does it really make a big difference?

Ah, PF cakes, I wouldn't bother with a sub-base, considering it's already embellished with water retaining vermiculite. PF cakes, as you know are 1 part BRF, 2 parts vermiculite and 1 part water. It's not like millet that's really dry and benefits from adding extra water retention, be it the ^above examples with a sub-base of whatever media you choose, or this example given of field capacity vermiculite added to the millet and then cased.



Just crumble your cakes and case them in 60/40 and you'll be fine.

I would put the base layer if not for moisture (which really isn't needed if you keep up with your mistings) but for a place for the myc piss to drain off to. Not really that big a deal but I hate letting em sit in it.

I know some people like using coir for a casing layer, but I would personally recommend using a 50/50 verm and p.moss. While the benefits of coir are that you can see when the moister has run out, there are cons too. If you let that coir dry out for a day or two, your screwed. Plus, coir vs p.moss, p.moss will provide the mushrooms nutrients, while coir does not.
