bottom casing layer

I have been reading many many casing teks, all of which say to use a bottom casing layer of either perlite or vermiculite. Yet when i read and look at someones results they state they used no bottom casing layer. anyone not use a bottom casing layer? which is a better idea and why?

If your container is transparent, use a nice fat layer so light can't get through it, if you do not you will have mushrooms that grow down as well as up......If you want to save some money on verm, paint the bottoms and sides of the containers flat black so light cannot penetrate it.....You do not need a bottom layer if you use foil containers or the like.....

my cat occasionly uses a bottom layer just to absorb any excess water (you dont want to drown the mycelium)
so perlite, verm or coir works fine for this application
