Should I have a bottom casing layer?

Hey everyone,

I have 1 cake that is colonizing considerably slower than the rest due to over-hydration(too wet substrate). I desided i would try a very simple 1 cake verm casing. I am planning on doing a verm only casing because it seems to be simplest and i dont have to order anything like coco-coir online. I read alot of the casing FAQs and read that a bottom casing layer is optional.

I was wondering what people's opinions on a bottom casing layer are? Is is a good think for a 1st time caser? Do you use it? Reasons behind your opinion!

Why not? I've alway's used a bottom layer so i don't know if it's better than not having one. If you felt like going to lowes or walmart you could pick up a bag of jiffy 50/50 (50 peat moss 50vermiculite with lime) potting soil and this is better than just vermiculite. It's alway's worked so i haven't changed it, no matter what the casing material.

Basicly a bottom casing layer serves one main function that is to hold more moisture, I'd say its better to use.

yes hes right if you use a bottom casing you need to be concious of your moisture level, given the added moisture underneed your casing, if you can get the ratio right the extra moisture will help, in your 2 or 3 flush

You couild possibly put a dry layer of verm on the bottom. Since your cakes are really moist this may soak up any extra water that may prohibit the casing from progressing.

Why would over-hydrated substrate be a bad thing?
