Save yourself time and materials and dont use a bottom casing layer. Its is not necassary.

say i split the amount of casings i have with a few bottom layer ones and a few with just substrate and a top verm, would this differentiate the times at which pinning is induced or would it pretty much be the same for both, avoiding any chance of overlay for the non bottom ones? also wouldnt a bottom casing layer be kinda like more juice for more flushes?

Yes, it may help keep your substrate from drying out early. But then you have another breeding ground for contams that may go unnoticed. Is it worth the risk? Try a few casings with and without and see what you prefer. A bottom casing layer may do you good. I myself have been satisfied without.

I agree with pleezr, why bother putting something in that will risk your whole casing? It's more to worry about. And I dont really see it as being worth it becuase I throw my casings out around 3-4 flushes I don't see what huge use it would do. I can always keep the casing mad moist by spraying the top layer and patching after harvest.

The idea behind a moist verm bottom layer is for a moisture reserve. Vermiculite by itself has no nutrietional value. Like was posted before you can mist and not use the verm. Either should produce good results. Putting dry verm on the bottom is frankly useless! Agreed, you should experiment and find what works best for you.
