i wonder about this: stamets says that *partially moistened vermiculite can be placed along the bottom of the tray to absorb excess water* (TMC p 134) but never a mention about the bottom layer as adding moisture/preventing it to be dried out, which is what i've always heard here & there. has the bottom layer's use changed? just curious.

Can anyone support this? Anyone else use 50/50 for the bottom layer or anything else besides verm? I would think that having that moist nutrient layer at the bottom would be an open house for contams, especially in a place where the water will collect.

It's been proven time and time again that the bottom layer has absolutely no effect on the size of the fruits, the yield or any other desirable aspect. It seems some people still choose to use the bottom layer and that's cool too. I have seen hundreds of beautiful flushes so thick with mushrooms it looks like you could walk on them, both with AND without a bottom layer. Whether it be of vermiculite, 50/50, perlite, whatever. In my opinion, I truly believe it has no effect whatsoever.

Taz, what's your deal with 50/50? You responded similarly to my post but didn't explain yourself. What's wrong with it? Can't it be sterilized?

Here's my take on bottom casing. It definitely is a contam risk while the mycelium is reestablishing itself after crumbling, BUT, if it is applied after the casing has become a solid mass again it can be a good source of moisture. What I have started doing is not bottom casing until the top casing layer is colonised, or even pinning, then carefully popping the mycelium "loaf" out of the tray, adding a 1+cm layer of saturated perlite, and replacing the casing. Seems to work well enough from the look of my "PESA pics". Also, it's easy to introduce more water to the bottom layer, once the casing is looking a bit shrunken, using a syringe down the side of the tray.

yes, I also want to know about using the 50/50 for the bottom layer, I had just read that this was a better casing tek, per Ryche, and now I hear otherwise.
As of now I've stuck with plain verm. on the bottom, but was about to try the 50/50

All i want to say is, to the guy with the friend who does not use a bottom layer of vermiculite as to save money, wow that sucks.
