Re: Using/Mixing Perlite as a casing layer

I wouldn't think perlite would help a casing layer too much. The components of a good casing should be materials that hold water. The casing is the "resevior" for the developing mushrooms. Vermiculite and peat are widely used as casing ingredients because of their ability to hold lots of h2o. Perlite, on the other hand, does not hold nearly as much water. Perlite is better used for humidification of the terrarium because it wicks water rather than holding it. However, some like to place cakes directly on top of the damp perlite in the bottom of the terrarium to help case the cakes for a second flush. You would need to case the top of the cake with at least some vermiculite.

I think Hippie3 once said he used a 70% verm and 30% perlite casing.. I assume you'd sterilize it, as I don't think either contains micro-organsims you want to save.

I myself don't know why it would be better than straight verm (in fact, I think it would be bad since perlite would dissipate the contained moisture) but if it works, it works.
