Perlite vs. Vermiculite

My friends cat made 18 pint jars half with perlite and half with vermiculite. The strain is Cambodian. I am at day 12 and I have had to through away 6 perlite jars and 0 vermiculite jars. Would it be safe to say that perlite is a worse barrier for the top layers of the jars? They are growing at the same rate and we will have to see if the fruit size is any different.

Did you use perlite for the whole cake? or just the top barrier. Im not sure about the effectiveness of perlite as a barrier, in fact a friend of mine is testing some half pint jars with a perlite top, we'll see how it goes. As for perlite being an actual substrate, I've seen pics posted here that show a fruiting perlite cake, I believe it took longer than a regular verm and brf cake though. One can't really say if it's the perlite that lead to contams as there are many other factors that determine this.

i would stick with the verm! why? well because the verm does a better shield since its smaller it can cover/seal the top layer better.
NOTE: this is just my opinion. From what i hear and have seen peeps mostly use verm.

Vermiculite is preffered for use in cakes because it absorbs and stores water. Perlite actually is more of a wick type material. That is why it is used in fruiting chambers. It wicks water from the bottom of the tub to the surface where it evaporates and humidifies the chamber. I'm not sure why perlite doesn't work so well as a barrier. I ran short of vermiculite once, and used perlite for several jars. All the jars with the perlite barrier contamed. Just my two cents. Good luck

i haven't tried it, but i would think a layer of dry purlite would suck the water out of the cake, it would probably already be saturated after pc-ing.
