    #2488111 - 03/31/04 09:22 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Vermiculite retains moisture and releases it slowly which is ideal for a substrate. Perlite wicks moisture (by greatly increasing the evaporative surface area) and is thus better for maintaining high humidity.

You're best off buying verm online somewhere. If you really can't find it, why not try grains and case? If you don't have a pressure cooker you might try fractionated sterilization but I haven't seen a whole lot of confidence in the efficacy of this procedure

By the way both can be found at Lowes. Thats where I get mine, in the garden section. Both are under 3 dollars there for big bags.

Perlite is like little lava rocks. Verm is like little sponges. You can use plain coir to case with.

use half coir and half verm to case, perlite is what you see on the bottom of everyones incubator, it helps maintin humidity.
