Inoculation in Perlite, Vermiculite, BRF Cake
    #4039450 - 04/11/05 01:59 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has ever had any success with a mixture of BRF, Perlite, Vermiculite, and gypsum for inoculation. I am new, and have actually never attempted before. The vermiculite that I am able to get hold of here is ground quite finely, and i have read this is not good. I was just wondering if maybe a combination of Perlite/Verm would aid my cause when attempting the PF. Thanks.

Heard it works, in Some cases, but i personally wouldn't...

Finely ground BRF isn't IDEAL, but it'll work...

You could always use grains

X-Nay the perlite idea. And yes, fine vermiculite works fine. Stick to the tek on point and you'll have success. 1/4 cup of brf to 1/2 cup of vermiculite to 60cc's of h2o per 1/2 pint and pc for 60 minutes @ 15 psi. Or steam sterilize for 90 minutes in a spaghetti pot. No gypsum required for this tek. Good luck and welcome to The Shroomery!

Thanks for your replies, that was damn quick. Will definitely go w/ the fine vermiculite and I'll just grind half my BR to F. Should make for less of a paste that way anyways.

Yep, BRF works nice IMO for new growers. If you follow the tek to a tee, it's fool proof. And you can produce nice yields for yourself with a doble end cased cake. Then expand your knowledge into the realm of grains/straw/poo. Good luck. These were done with wbsf. Nothin special. BRF excedes WBSF IMO.

I wouldnt bother grinding half I'd leave the brown rice whole and soak and simmer it, strain and mix with about 20% verm and load into jars and PC it. If you have a PC, theres no reason to do BRF, you can just use whole brown rice. I did some quarts of the above steps and they colonized INCREDIBLY fast. From G2G transfers (1 quart into 12), done in 3 days...from spores, done in 6 days. Just between 1/2 full and 2/3 full in the quarts.

Skip the PF Tek and go directly to WBS (Wild Bird Seed) and casing with 50/50+. If I knew then, what I know now, I never would have wasted time on the PF Tek. I have gone full swing with the aforementioned teks and my results are profound. Everything is on schedule, contam free, and fruiting appears eminent.

With the advice from previous posts and members on the forum, you can't go wrong. Pay particular attention to posts by Scatmanrav, Diver, Agar, and the like. If I forgot to mention someone, please forgive me. It's not personal.

This would always be my advice, EXCEPT if ther person has no PC. If you have a PC though, theres no reason not to go with whole grains (millet, WBS, whole brown rice, rye) over the PF Tek IMO. I gather this person has a PC, though, if they planned on grinding only half the BR into BRF (leaving the other half whole needing a PC).

If he doesn't have a PC, I suggest he go out and buy one. I bought an 8QT PC from Wal-Mart for $40.00 and it works fine. I'll probably upgrade here pretty soon because it only holds 4 quart jars at a time. I need a PC that can hold 6-8. A minor inconvenience though.

A very wise investment...however some only want one or two grows and it may not be worth it for the person. If you plan on continuing though, a PC is really needed for this hobby to do right.

The best place for PC's is on ebay. I've gotten 2 that hold 10 quart jars off ebay, one was 30 bucks shipped, the other was 20 bucks shipped. Both worked fine when I got them (though the 30 dollar one's seal melted when I ran it dry for like 6 hours when I fell asleep so it doesnt hold pressure anymore)

Point well taken on the Ebay source. I didn't even think about that. I just hate waiting for things. I'll probably make my next purchase for a PC on Ebay though.

Scatmanrav, I heard that the PC's that have the rubber seal are the ones to avoid. Is that right? Should I get the ones that seal metal to metal?

If you can afford an AA, or other with metal to metal seal, FOR SURE, get it...I was just starting out when I bought these though, hadnt done a grow yet and was still learning...went with the cheaper of the PC's I could find that looked sturdy and that sellers said heated up fine (and had good feedback)...so I got no metal to metal seal. My next PC will have one though (All American).
