I scored horse poop!! Also...a question...
    #775100 - 07/25/02 05:09 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

I just got off the phone with my housemate and it turns out that our nearest neighbor up the road from us has 3 horses and he called her asking if I could take poop from her every month for gardening purposes...she was totally cool with it.

The Goa Gods are indeed smiling upon my new hobby. LOL

Now for my question to my peers who use millet or rye: which do you prefer for cubensis and why?

Also...are rye berries the same thing as rye seeds?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Love & Light,

Boppity

PS - How long must you dry out the horse dung before you can pasturize it with the horse poo tek?

rye berrys and rye grain are the same thing. Rye seed is also. I have seen rye seed from a feed store that i didn't like quite as much. If it looks good, get it. hopefully organic though.

I havn't used millet, just because rye works so well for me. i may try it if i just get bord with rye. Right now I have a standard pf tearing through horse dung per the roadkill tech.

Hi Shaw,

I plan on ordering my spawn from Myco Supply. They're currently out of stock with the rye grain...but have millet...that's my whole reason for asking.

I can wait though...I still have two pounds of BRF I need to use up first and since you just answered my question if it's cool to case/spawn horse poop with broken up cakes...I have no fears. Plus I just got a bunch of prints in the mail from trades...next month is going to be SO exciting!!

Did I mention I love this hobby?

Peace,

Boppity

Shiiiiit Boppity,

Good on ya for finding a free source of horse poo.

The Raccoon does about the same. Every month or so he goes to a FOAF & gets a small PU load just for the time it takes to shovel it in. For cow poo he buys it from a dairy (somewhat composted & pretty dry) for $18 bucks a cubic yard & they will even use a tractor to load it in the truck.

He gets wheat straw bales from a feed store for $5 each.

The Coon bought an old pickup bed cheap & a liner for it. Set it on concrete blocks 2 high in the front & one high in the back so it would drain.

Throws in some straw, poo, straw, poo ....etc. Wets it with a hose, covers it with a tarp (loose) & lets it work. After about 10 -- 15 days he turns it over w/pitchfork, wets again (if needed), adds some gypsum & lets it work somemore. After 3 or 4 weeks he has fair compost up the ying/yang.

For grain just get some from any grocery that sells bulk food grade rye grain. It works fine & is cheap by the pound. Since it is human food grade, it is not full of insecticides & fungicides.

Also, try PetCo or PetSmart (if they are in your area) for wild bird seed. They have 40 pound bags for around $6 bucks.

Once you get the hang of seed to seed or grain to grain transfers, you will have spawn up the gazooooooo. One colonized quart jar, by transfering, will get you 20 more & the colonize quick.

Best-O-Luck. SixTango

Wild birdseed is often a great value, and it has some benifits over rye if your going to spawn it out.. Namely more innoculation points, and some variety to the grain. Around here most more predominantly Millet, although in another post someone said that around them the generic birdseed was predominantly sorgham.
good luck
