While I'm sure that this information is not the final word, according to Frabil's worm box insructions, the mold doesn't affect the worms.
And I've read on some vermiculture site that the worms will eat the molds and their spores thereby pasteurizing the medium. Don't know that I'd trust the sterility, but I like the idea.
About a week ago I acquired 2 huge styrofoam coolers. They measure approx. 48"x18"x16". Comparing that to the size of a habitat II, this box can support 480 worms or so.
If anyone is interested, talk to your local flower wholesaler, I paid $25 a piece for mine. They do like to hoard them here in MN, because the only way they get them is the cut flowers they order from CA are shipped in them.
For anyone near the Twin Cities, I am able to get several more, but they can't be sent ups due to their size. I can only fit 2 in my Ciera, one in the back seat and one in the trunk.

Sorry to hear that. Mine just smells like damp earth. My bedding is newspaper, straw, dung. Do you bury the scraps you add?
*Sorry, I missed the part where you mentioned burial. Maybe overfeeding. Maybe you make enough scraps for more than one bin. Or it's so warm that contams. get a chance to spread before the scraps are consumed.
*Also keep a close eye on the temp inside the box if you have it outside. They die easily if they get too warm. I killed a box off in '99 because of that (outdoor temps. in the 90's). My basement is always 57 deg. f. The worms seem to like it, and as long as I bury the scraps, there's no unpleasant odor.

that's pretty... * How much material can you put in? And do you have temp issues?
*that relate to the worm activity?
