Open air grain to grain transfer idea..
    #1575886 - 05/25/03 01:00 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Maybe this has been done before but anyways. I was pondering on a way to do grain to grain with spawnbags (without letting contams in as I don't have a flowhood or anything) and this popped into my head..any comments good or bad welcome

Basically just an 'airlock' type idea,
1) Tie string near top of bag, open it up to make a pocket and mist with peroxide solution.
2) Drop some colonised grain in and mist again.
3) Tie off top of bag and leave it for a few minutes for the peroxide to do its stuff (maybe give the grain a shake around)
4) Undo the bottom tie and let the grain drop into the bag.

That's interesting.  I bet it would work, though it's risky.  The cleaner you can be the better when loading the airlock.  I don't know if this will make any difference for success, but I might be tempted to let the spawn re-establish itself in the airlock for a few days before dropping it down below.  Nice idea

I do grain to grain transfers using the oven tek.. works like a charm.

Need a cheap flowhood?

Get a fresh, medium to large-sized plastic garbage bag and lay on it's side.. Wipe your hands and the surfaces to be touched on jars or bags with rubbing alcohol. Place materials inside of bag and spray inside with Lysol or similar disinfectant. Turn off any nearby fans or air conditioning and close windows and doors so that the air is still.

Now just reach your hands inside while keeping the opening draped and transfer away. I use a tablespoon to transfer material from jar to jar. You can be pretty darn sloppy and never get contams with this method.

When done, just toss the bag.

I empty the colonised grain into a clean bowl and then put a pinch or two into each of the jars. All open air, but i run a hepa filter in a small room prior worked great at my last house, but recently i've been having failures...i think it could have been the spawn though.

You might as well be doing them on your counter top. Oven tek is bogus. Pictures have been posted showing the air currents actually force air down into your containers.

I do like the airlock idea. I wouldn't worry about letting the grain recover in the airlock. I think it may help if you're having problems. I know somebody that played around with a similar idea for bulk kits. He actually made a dual chambered bag, grain on top, compost on bottom. Pc'd the hole thing and sealed it up. Grain was innoculated, then once colonized, was dumped onto the compost without ever exposing to outside air. It worked, but he gave up on the idea before bringing it to market.

I simply use a drinking glass filled with 3% peroxide... drop a tablespoon in there..

unscrew both lids from colonized and uncolinized quart jars. spray some lysol in the air, quickly take spoon and scoop colonized grain chunk, transfer to other jar. put spoon back in peroxide. and move on to next jar.. don't wipe spoon, just scoop and go!

no bad jars so far.. 25 done.

nice. i thought this shit alot harder, but apparently not. What kind of success rates are you guys getting just doing open air transfers?

10ml of 3% h2o2 per pint of substrate into the receiving jar, and a hefty shaking, just before transfer, and g-g transfers can easily be achieved without any kind of glovebox etc. IME.

Not quite. I've seen the pictures myself but it is done with incense, which is much heavier than most air particles. Plus, if the materials are placed in the correct position of the oven, so that you are working in the upward moving part of the convection cell created, there should be no problem.

It?s the air current that carries the incense smoke into the jar.

depending on your grain, that may be a little much. I regularly got success with 10 ml's per quart, and often less. Some grains, and some prep methods, will have less ability to absorb the extra moisture. Particularly, I've hear that popcorn doesn't soak up much extra at all, and these levels would be far too much.

The peroxide will keep the grain plenty clean ime.

i find that just the coating of h2o2 on the spoon when you transfer. as long as you dip between each transfer is enough!!

Horrible success doing open air transfers, unless peroxide was used, or a glovebox/flowhood.

That's my experience though, I have 8 cats - so my situation might be different from yours.

my lack of clarity there...
I meant per pint of substrate not per pint jar, so assuming quart jars are roughly half filled, to allow for shaking, that is roughly the right proportion.
I'd use less on large grains, the 10ml is more suitable for the likes of millet.

Here are some pic of some g2g?s that a friend of mine did on the 3rd
These were done open air. No oven , no glove box. Just very clean working conditions. Ran the HEPA at full blast for all day and periodically liberally sprayed the room with lysol. He used a long spoon swabed with alcohol and put a little in each and some to spawn on straw.

Left is Equarorian center is Creepers and right is Elephant Gate

EQ is WBS grained with WBS

Creeper is popcorn grained with popcorn

Elephant Gate is WBS grained with popcorn

Here?s a couple of pics of the staw w/Elephant Gate colonizing nicely...I can?t wait

lol, i wish!

if only they were helpful to my studies, rather than detrimental, my life would be perfect!

I love my cats, but sheesh - they have made it so I had to rent a garage in order to make my lab. I attempted in a room in the house, but after the 1st time i left the door open for about 5 minutes, they were already into all my stuff, and sharpening their claws on the straw i had bailed. So I realized I needed to be elsewhere, they are so cute - but so destructive! satans angels!

>It?s the air current that carries the incense smoke into the jar.

It's gravity that makes it fall. If the incense is in the downward moving part of the convection cell then it will also make it fall. Otherwise, the force of air resistance from warm air rising will push air born particles upward.

You will most likely not have anything floating around in the air that is heavy enough to fall through the upstream of the convection cell, unless you disturb it by moving objects through it.

If it's done right you can get great success with an oven. Then again, I could get great success just about anywhere if enough precautions are taken. Where ever you do the transfer, the main points area always to keep the surrounding area clean and the less air movement the better. If air movement is unavoidable, make it an upward draft.

Ive colonized wbs with agar plates in ziplock bags with this method no problem.
