Running queston (left leg)
    #7686811 - 11/27/07 04:43 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Why is it only my left leg that experiences pain while running? The right one never feels pain. Is it because I'm right handed and my left leg just isn't as developed?

Is it possible to run wrong?

Stretching perhaps? Or you have injured your left one in a previous exercise. it IS possible to injure one muscle in a certain limb

could be a number of reasons. youd have to be more specific. what part of the leg? sharp shooting pain? dull achey pain? joint pain? there really are dozens of things it could be according to your description :P

be a little more descriptive and i can probably help you. if i dont know off the top of my head, i have a book dedicated to running injries, pains and rehabilitation.

and YES it is very possible to run wrong. most people do run wrong.

it could also be your back. a friend of mine told me to see a chiropractor as i may be walking off balance. it would cause you to use one leg more than the other and thus the pain in the one leg. i just stopped running though lol. although i may pick it back up again. you may just have a dominate leg and its putting you off balance idk.

It's like a sore/achy pain, where my thigh is. And if I push (or even walk) on it, it hurts. Maybe I've been overdoing it...

I'll take a day off tomorrow with the running and just do something else.

ok that narrows it down a bit. tell me this, when did you start running? what was the distance? how many days do you run? how has your progression been from when you started until now? and when did the pain start? basically, give me a very detailed log of your running habits from beginning to present.

just a thought, unless you are a marathon runner and have ALOT of experience and run daily, you shouldnt try to. progression in running should not be quick. run one day, rollerblade or bike the next. when i started running i found that my body would seriously let me hear it if i ran more than twice a week for the first month or two. if you are new or even fairly new to running, you need at least a day or two of healing in between runs. running is one of the most damaging activities you can do to your body, outside of contact sports. every step you take is another impact on every joint and ligament and tendon in your body.

Okay, thanks for the feedback, I guess I've been overdoing it.  I just started running maybe about two months ago, but I've been trying to do it as much as I can, despite hearing that I should give myself a day or more between runs.  Damn!  I didn't listen to common sense and now I'm paying the price, typical.

Well...I'll take a few days off from that activity and find something else in the meantime.

If the muscle is sore/achey, it may be overworked. Rub/massage it a lot, use a tennis ball to roll over the muscles. Work the knots out, then stretch stretch stretch. Start with your feet, then hamstrings/calves, knees than thighs and hips. Most people tend to wolk lopsided due to not standing up straight and having their hips in line. If you stretch the muscles out a lot of the tension created by bad alignment will be released and you will find your posture, strength and flexibility improving. These are some important keys to getting stronger

just remember, your body will tell you all you need to know. if its telling you to take a rest, do it. you should do as much as you can, but as much as you can ends when the pain starts. despite what other people say, it should not HURT to run. the only acceptable pain associated with running should be cramps. if at ANY point you experience muscular or joint pain, stop running immediately. walk the rest of the way home. NEVER run "through" the pain. it always makes it worse.

how far are you running now?

also, most people dont realize that you should stretch before AND AFTER running.
