Psilocybe cubensis Ecuador on rye cased with 50/50
    #767556 - 07/22/02 02:03 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Spores: 2 syringes of P. cubensis, Ecuador strain ordered from sporeworks.

Spawn: Rye grain (5 pounds)

Casing: 50/50 peat/vermiculite

Spawn preparation procedure:

The rye was soaked in regular tap water for about eight hours. After soaking it was boiled for 45 minutes until some kernels burst. The rye was then placed into pint jars. Five pounds of rye after procesesing filled 21 pint jars with a fair amount left over.

Sterilization procedure:

After the jars were filled the lids were screwed on loose with the seal side up. Two layers of foil was tightly placed over the lid and trimmed to a half inch below the lid to allow for easier opening and reclosing durring inoculation. The water level in the pressure cooker was kept low so that boiling water would not bubble up into the jars and over soak them. The jars were then pressure cooked at 15 psi for one hour. They were then allowed to cool overnight in a makeshift clean box.

inoculation procedure:

The oven tek method was used. To insure sterility a dust mask, latex gloves, a hairnet, and plastic poncho was worn. The air was heavily sprayed with an water/alchohol mix to bring contaminants out of the air. All working surfaces were cleaned with alchohol. Each jar was inoculated in several spots then shaken to distribute spores. After each inoculation the needle was flamed and wiped with an alchohol swab.

The jars were then placed in a plastic tub to colonize. The tub sat on top of another container filled with water and a small amount of bleach. This container had a submersible heater set to 88F. This kept the inncubation chamber at about 85F.

Friday/Saturday June 21/22:

Jars sterilized and inoculated.

Monday, June 24:

One jar shows the begginings of fuzzy hite mycilial growth.

Thursday, June 27: Most jars show some growth. All jars are shaken to further distribute mycilium.

Friday, July 5: The four jars with the most extensive colonization are selected for casing. A 50/50 mix of peat and vermiculite is used. The casing layer made about half an inch deep.

Casing preparation procedure:

In an oven bag the peat and vermiculite was mixed and water was added untill a few drops of water could be squeezed out. The oven bag was wrapped in a shirt to prevent it from melting to the side of the pressure cooker and then cooked at 15 psi for 1 hour. Care was take with the water level in the cooker to keep boiling water from bubbling over the bag. The bag was also not closed so tightly that it would burst. It was then allowed to cool overnight.

The cased setup was then placed back in the inncubation chamber for three days to allow the mycilium to recover from the stress of being broken up and cased, this also allowed it to colonize the casing somewhat.

Monday, July 8:

The casing is placed in the basement to cold shock it. The temperature remains about 70F for three days. The casing is also exposed to daylight durring this time. The casing is also fanned to bring in fresh air at least two times a day from this point on.

Thursday, July 11:

The casing is brought out of the basement into the fruiting chamber. This consists of a large plastic container with a clear top. The botton of the chamber is covered in a layer of perlite soaked in water and a little hydrogen peroxide. The casing is misted daily. The temperature is kept around the high 70?s low 80?s.

Sunday, July 20:

First pins begin to show.

Monday, July 22:

Pins progress nicely. Its obvious that the shrooms are going to for some reason be extreemly fat. It is also noted that the heads of the shrooms are strangely small.

Update:
I didn?t mist today and increased the air exchange by venting much more frequently. This seems to have helped the fatass problem and increased the rate of growth dramticaly. Note the rediculous amount of pins in the second picture.

195.1g harvest and drying setup. [Re: Techniques]
    #773853 - 07/24/02 05:44 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Harvested 195.1g wet today.

Used a tupperware container inside an ovenbag full of Dry-z-Air to dry the shrooms. The air was sucked out of the bag since I read that being exposed too to much air can produce shrooms with a heavy body load (ref. The Mushroom Entheogen ). They were also placed in a cool dark area.

A paper towel separated the two layers of shrooms with one over the top to keep dust off.

Hmm, weird for EQs. Them resemble Matias Romero to me, it is obvious they are not though. I think there is something definately wrong with the growing conditions or possibly the strain. Either way they are very appealing

I agree. [Re: pleezr]

I agree, they are odd eq's. After doing some research I've come to the conclusion that their odd form is due to a bit too much misting, too little air circulation and the fact that its be consistantly VERY hot in my house. I've decreased the misting, increased the air circulation and its been cooler the past few days and the next flush is looking much taller and classicaly eq'ish.

The second part of the uneven first flush was harvested today. 270.6g total this harvest. 195.1g from the last harvest + 270.6g this harvest + 39.0g eaten tuesday = 504.7g for the first flush.

After harvesting the casing was misted heavily to replenish water taken out. All shrooms harvested brused deep blue no matter how delicatly they were handled.

Also all the shrooms where moved to a new drying chamber. The bottom pan from the pressure cooker was turned upside down and the empty space underneath filled with drying agent. The shrooms were placed on top of the pan and the pressure cooker was sealed. It was then placed in the basement on the cold cement floor.

Too much misting will cause rot. The caps will even cave in in spots.

The second flush has been on its way for a few days now and I just got around to taking their picture. Misting has been greatly reduced this time around and the shrooms thus are not developing into fatasses.

(Note: the blotchy sections are more a trick of the shadows than the actual color of the casing, someone else?s camera was used so it looks abit different from the other pics.)

Flush number two is commin along well. No sign of fattass?s and the pinset seems to be fairly dence (although abit uneven)

.....I dont think those are EQs.  I would bet they really are PF classic Matais Romero.  This could be why they have grown funky.  MR dont like to be cased....I am pretty sure of it.  You mention they turn blue super easy, well so do MR.  Where did you get this strain?  I will be back with pics to compare if you dont mind.  I hope you havent traded any prints of this   I could be wrong, but I know EQs.

Also, now that I look at your pics again.  You have a case of bacterial blotch there.  IME it is pretty harmless if not out of control.

......so how did the casing turn out?

Ya know, I come to this thread over and over to get another look.  And I cant make
up my mind on that strain.  Today I think EQ, a few days ago I was sure they were MR  I cant get over them shrooms!  They take the shape of MR, yet MR usually have a golden cap.

I doubt Sporeworks would make that mistake.
