Psilocybe cubensis "Treasure Coast" PF-Tek cased
#537932 - 02/01/02 03:37 PM (22 years, 8 months ago) |

Cake Substrate: Dark rye flour, vermiculite. The water added to the substrate was boiled and while still hot 2 teaspoons of honey was added. Honey was dissolved and fragrant water allowed to cool and be added to substrate. It made the substrate sticky on the hands, but still was easy to work with. Pressure cooked for 1 hour, in a PC with 5 other 1/2 pint jars. After pressure cooking, it was noticed that the honey had maybe carameled onto the glass, and the cake looked harder than the batch without honey. Cake created Dec. 9, 2001. Inoculated with Treasure Coast spores from a syringe from Captn Max. Incubated in dark and at 83 degrees Farenheit, fairly constant. Slow colonization, caramelized areas of cake cause trouble for mycelium perhaps, cake is completely colonized approx January 29, 2002. Casing : Ryche Hawks 50/50 Tek loosely followed. Vermiculite moistened with boiling water and allowed to cool at room temperature inside semi-sterile area. 1/2 inch layered in bottom of ez-foil aluminum tray, dimensions 8 inches by 3 3/4 inches. Cake crumbled inside ziploc bag, black (burnt?) vermiculite grains noticed, cake consistency is VERY stiff, but still moist, stiffness believed to be result of caramelization between substrate grains. Cake layered in tray about 1/2 inch thick. 3/4 inch mixture of boiling water moistened vermiculite + worm castings added to top. Placed inside perlite lined container, boiling water allowed to cool for 10 minutes then added, humidity easily 100% Now for the wait. Feb 1, 2002

February 2nd, 2002: Looking at the crack between the casing and the tinfoil tray, you can notice rapid mycelial growth is occuring. No photo (yet) because he?s not sure how photogenic this development is, and the digital camera is elsewhere at the moment. This is very encouraging, after having little success at cakes due to impatience for fruit maturity. Temperature is approximately 72 degrees farenheit, which should (?) be nearer to 80 until mycelium is exposed on the top, correct? A sealed bottle of heated water to use as a heat source is added to the terrarium. Baraka, what do you mean by "yell at you" ? Are you referring to angryshrooms nick? Peace

GODDAMNIT WHY THE HELL DO YOU AHVE SO MUCH WATER IN YOUR PERLITE!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ehheheheeheh I just jokin too No, but seriously I've heard that too much water actually inhibits the perlites function as a humidity source...it cant evaporate the water as fast, therefor theres less humidity. SO WATCH OUT OR I MIGHT YELL AT YA! heeeeee ehhahahhhahaa (im crazy its ok)

February 6th, 2002 daily misting continues, mycelium can be seen poking through in a couple spaces, looking through crevices shows a fairly even mycelium bed under casing layer. For a higher quality copy of the top picture where you can really see the mycelium poking through and saying "hi" click here (350k, but I just love the picture). I'd apologize about the image size, but no one told you to click on this thread

Originally I was going to post this as a "wtf is wrong with my casing, help help help" post, but now that I take a look at it, there are pins!! Holy Heck batman, thats amazing. Ok so here goes. Pin-tastic! I've got the casing you see there (the one with the pins) in a rubbermaid container, with perlite on the bottom, and I fan it everytime I think about it (at least once a day). Does this seem like it should work? This is a picture of my casing incubation chamber, I'm wondering if this is ok for my purposes? Cmon peoples, heckle my setup, help me make it better!

I cant say I've been really pleased with the fruiting capabilities of this mushroom, I've found its really a bitch to get good fruits (maybe its just me). I'll post a link to my thread with pictures of my TC cakes that I'm really mad at, they produce a shitload of little itty bitty shroomies, damnit I want bigguns! They are potent though (from my experience), eating a spoonful of aborts makes me pretty happy. I havent really gotten enough material to really blow my doors with it though. Hopefully when this casing starts to rock I'll be able to answer your questions a little better.

It's filled with heated water and set in the perlite layer, keeps the temperature up a bit (regulating effect) and maybe heats the perlite layer, adding to the amount of moisture evaporated out of it. Thats my thought anyway.

I wish, my pressure cooker is gone right now, but I hope that I can talk one of my friends into buying one again. You DO need a PC for straw teks right? I tried the oven-bag tek, I'm still debating whether or not it worked, I'm not sold on it at all. I'll stick to these casings, the pins look much bigger today, its very encouraging.

Awesome. Can I use just any hay? I have a bag of timothy hay here that I had tried to mix with worm castings and verm and spawn a surgically cleansed cake, the mixture was then cased, but I'm still waiting for it to fruit (hopefully days?). Long question short, is timothy hay ok?

RoBsTaMaCk - February 19th Split - February 20th Who else is in? I feel like hooking some people up! I havent grown many at all really, I did it a couple years ago, and right now its not like I?m growing tons, just enough for myself every once in a while. To answer your question, I?d case 2 of them, and leave 2 as cakes, but thats just me, I like variety.

Azurepower, sorry dude, there is a bit of a complication because RoBsTaMaCk already picked the 19th, you can pick early or late on the 19th, and automatically bump RoBs.. into the other slot for the 19th (early / late aka am/pm are the 2 slots). Bah that got complicated...I will only probably have a couple sporeprints to give away though, need to hook some friends up first. the breakdown: baraka : late 18th windex : late 20th fresh357: 22nd robstamack: late 19th azurepower : early 19th highonlife: 21st joshua: 4:20 am 18th -> dont think I wont be up to check! phrozendata : 23rd ( i know, but its just for fun! ) Haha this is kinda fun. Peace out

...and I just noticed another pin coming up out of a kinda wacky half sized TC casing of substrate that was hanging around the lair for a long ass time in a plastic bag. Hooray.

I'm kind of worried about what's going on here, the caps are getting shriveled and sort of funky looking, I have been fanning RELIGIOUSLY, could someone point out what I'm doing wrong, or if thats just the way they go at this point. You can see what I mean right?

Kinda looks like they're aborting (or beginning to abort for that matter)...though i've never had a mushroom abort that big, so maybe just bruising? Hell just my two cents. Either way the TC's i've worked with never did that, they do bruise very blue however, you been fondling those caps? LOL Peace

Motherfucker! The ones on the cake did the same thing, now what causes aborting? High humidity? High CO2? Temperature related? Any possible fixes? I guess if they abort, they abort, but this is a piss off, I kind of wanted to make some prints. But I guess if the strain sucks then I should just let it fade. Damn.

if you are fanning TOO much you may be drying them out and aborting them?.. do you mist after you fan?

Hmm how often do you fan. I fan 2 times a day with my perlite setup and it keeps the humidity way up.

Ok, I've made a mistake here, I think your 'too much fanning' idea may be it. I am pretty sure this batch is fucked, and no way I can un-abort them right? Next time I guess, I will fan twice a day, and ensure my perlite is the correct humidity. Could someone please tell me how much a hygrometer would cost, a simple one that would at least let me ballpark it, I think that is the next thing I should purchase. Oh well. I'm really sorry about the bet thing guys, I've written all your names down as if you've all wone and as things get better for me I will be sending out stuff maybe. Ugh, I guess thats life though.

Man I was kicking mad until I saw my signature and thought about it, I guess this is just another chance to try my skills again at something that I really enjoy. Who expects perfection the first time? Not that what I had was near perfection, this just inspires me more. Damn I love this place. The majority that looked aborted have been picked, and the remainders have been given until Thursday at the absolute latest to do their thing or be picked. Ahhhhh, next time.

I went shopping about today, and found an analog hygrometer & thermometer "in one" unit at canadian tire. it was pretty cheap, $9.15 CAD including tax...probably not the best thing out there, but hey, it seems accurate enough for the task.
