Hello,
Because I have not seen many detailed grow logs from newbies, I decided to post my progress. I am using a combination of The Magic Mushroom Grow Guide and the PF TEK (They are basicaly the same thing). I ordered a syringe of Ecuadorian Strain from www.sporeworks.com. I prepared 10, 1/2 pint jars using the formula in the MMGG (2/3 cup vermiculite, 1/4th cup brown rice flour [which I ground myself], and 1/4 cup water). Sterilized in pressure cooker at 15lbs for 20 minutes; let jars cool over night. Left the jars with 4 holes in top of lid (rubber side against the glass) with tin foil on tops.
Day 0 (day of inoculation) - Sprayed bathroom with lysol; disinfected hands with antibacterial lysol wipes; put on gloves, disinfected gloves with wipes; put on face mask (the kind you use when painting so you don't inhale the fumes); sterilized tip of needle with lighter flame. Shook syringe and inoculated all 10 jars, a little more than 1 CC in each jar (although the sporeworks syringes are 10 CC syringes, they fill them up over 10 CCs  ). Recovered jars with tinfoil and put them back in the box they came in. Placed box in cool dark place (under my bed). I don't think I need to adjust the heat because it has been around 75-80 degrees latley.
Day 3 - Checked the jars; Some of them showed no growth, while others had many spots where I couls see small white fuzz. About 3 of the 10 jars showed growth. It's been hot latley (over 90 degrees); I think I might need an air conditioner but all of the stores around here are sold out!
Day 8 - All of the jars have lots of white fuzz. All of they jars show growth in the 4 spots that I inoculated in each. Some of them are growin much faster than others (probably because I didn't measure out exactly 1 cc for each jar; more solution in some) - Some of the jars (2 or 3) are about 50% colonized on the surface. No signs of contamination, which makes me happy (better not be any contamination! I used a pressure cooker, gloves, face mask, lysol spray AND lysol wipe!)
Anyway, let me know if you have any advice/comments.
For your info: Although this is my first time growing, I think I am going to case at least 2-4 of my cakes. My plan is to get clear plastic "Sterilite" or "Rubbermaid" container and use perlite for humidification. Is a 12 inch tall container too short? (I want to keep it under my bed, and my bed is exactly a foot off the ground). Also, I plan on casing bottom layer with 1 inch vermiculite, then about 1 inch of crumbled cake (1 cake per casing), and then a thin layer of Jiffy Mix on top.
Let me know what you pro's have to say; I will keep you updated.

I sterilize for 20min at 15PSI all the time (PF jars) and never have problems. Whole grains get 1hour at 15PSI though.

I wanted to leave them in the pressure cooker longer, but unfortionatly I was pressed for time. Also, I beleive the MMGG says that if you use a pressure cooker rather than a pot of boiling water, you only need to leave them in for 20 minutes.
Day 10 - All of the jars are continuing to grow. None show contamination. IN a few of the jars, the 4 areas of growth (the 4 points when I inoculated) have reached eachother (they are no longer 4 seperate patchs of growth; they have connected to form one big growth). Some of the jars still have 4 seperate patches of growth though. They are growing pretty fast.
I read in the MMGG that the closer the jars become to being 100% colonized, the slower the fungus grows because of CO2 build up and lack of oxygen. It also said that if you turn the jars upside down for a little while it will allow some CO2 to drain out, because CO2 is a heavey gas, and it will allow some fresh air to be sucked into the jar. I know that if I do this it may introduce contaminates to the jar too. I was wondering if anyone here has ever done this, and if so, how succesful were they?
Also, does anyone know if a 12 inch tall Rubbermaid container is TALL enough for the fruiting mushrooms? The jars are 5 inchs tall, so the cakes will be 5 inches tall minus the half inch or so of vermiculite on top. That leaves me with about 7 inches of grow space. Anyone know if that is enough space for Ecuadors?

Whenever I PC my PF cakes for an hour or more, they seem to dry out. The only way I could tell is when a jar wouldnt take the spores, and I opened em up. But the ones that DO take seem to be less dried. I always figured, the high temp for a long time dried em out. So I do PF's @ 15 PSI for 45 mins. 10 PSI might be good enough too. But thats just my experience.

I'm with pd.....on this one!
I sterilize for 20min at 15psi all the time (PF jars) and never have had any problems.
I also sterilize rye grain at 1hour at 15psi.

The last batch I had slowed down a lot when they were closing on 100% colonization, so i turned them upside down to let the CO2 drain out, and it seemed to speed the colonizing up, with no contams introduced .

Day 11- Some of the jars have started growth on the bottom of the jars. Almost all of the jars no longer contain 4 seperate areas of growth, and instead contain one giant growth wrapping around the sides of the jar. Some of the jars that have started growth on the bottom still have uncolonized places on the side of the jar. I think that these areas will be colonized soon.
Everything is happening much faster than I had expected.
Comments anyone?

Day 14 - Four of the jars were completely colonized on the sides, so I flipped them to help speed colonization on the bottom. These are the four jars which I will be casing. Id had been cold the last few days, so I had put the jars on a heating pad to keep the temperature in the mid 80's, however, the next day when I checked the jars they felt really warm, so I removed them from the heating pad. I hope I didn't harm them with the heat. Anyway, most of the jars are almost completely colonized on the size. 1 or 2 od them are still only avout 75% colonized.

I pressure cook for 45 mins to an hour i also heat up either an oven (i use a toster oven now to 150-200 degress and inoculate in there quicklly 1 at a time!. the heat makes any airbornes fly awayfrom the heat.ovens are really sterile hehe dont use clear plastic trays for cassings or youll get groth from the sides and underneth the cassing and collinize at 85 degrees works best for me like 75-80 seems way slower to me for some reason.......good luck man sounds like you did your homework i had succsess my first time with cakes hopfully you will to!

Oh, I forgot to say that when I prepared my substrate jars, I PRE-STERILIZED vermiculite and Brown Rice Flour by baking them in seperate pans at around 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Maybe this is why I was able to sterilize the jars for only 20 minutes in the pressure cooker and get away with no contamination?

Day 16 - Hey guys, I finaly got my camcorder out and got some pics of my substrate jars. I took the pictures yesterday. Here they are:

This jar is the fastest growing jar - here is the only spot left which is not colonized. Since yesterday (when I took the pictures) this spot has already been colonized. I am going to wait a week before casing this jar, along with 3 others:

Day 19 - I flipped over all of the jars because they have all started to colonize the bottoms of the jars. One of them is 100% colonized. All of the others are near 100% colonized except for one. None of the jars except for one have a spot of uncolonized substrate larger than the size of a quarter. So I am guessing all but that one are about 95%+ colonized.
The one that is not almost done is covered with growth except on the bottom. I decided that I am going to case 6 jars, and let the other fruit as cakes. Once the jars are fully colonized on the surface, I am going to leave them for another week to let them colonized the insides of the substrate. The first 6 jars done will be cased. I am using small aluminum foil loaf pans. I will be casing with the 50/50 mix (peat moss and vermiculite). I couldn't find any HYDRATED lime OR crushed oyster shell anywhere, so unless I can find some within the next couple days I will use just pure vermiculite and peat moss. I will sterilized the dry casing mix in my oven in a covered foil tray. I will be using perlite for humidification.
Should I make the bottom layer of the casing pure vermiculite, or should I have the bottom layer contain the 50/50 mix?

oyster shell is at pet stores. mine came in boxes.
hydrated lime is easy and cheap. i got mine at a hydroponic store along with coir.
the lime was 4 bucks for a huge bag.
ace hardware has hydrated lime.

I have been doing some reading and have decided that I am either going to use a bottom layer of damp vermiculite or damp perlite. I already sterilized my 50/50 (peat moss/vermiculite) casing mix. Do I need to sterilized the vermiculite or perlite for my bottom layer?
The reason I don't want to use the 50/50 mix for the bottom layer were concerns about contamination. I think I may just do half of the casings with perlite on the bottom and the other half with vermiculite.
Also, I am NOT going to use crushed oyster shell or lime. I read that casings will come out fine without it, and I can't find any; so screw it.
Let me know what you guys think.

Day 23 -
6 of the jars are 100% colonized. 3 of them are about 95% colonized and one of them is about 90% colonized (everything but the bottom) I am going to wait 5-7 more days for the 6 colonized jars to finish colonizing the insides of the substrate and then I am going to case them.

Day 25 - 9 of the jars are 100% colonized. The last one is about 90%-95% colonized. I think I am going to wait about 5 more days before removing the 6 fastest colonized jars to case them. I am going to use a bottom layer of vermiculite on 5 of them, and a bottom layer of perlite on one (I ran out of vermiculite and read of using perlite). Then I am going to take the colonized substrate and cut it in half verticly. Then I will lay these halves down in the vermiculite and put a layer of 50/50 casing mix on top.
5 more days. I can't WAIT
After I case them, I will allow them to colonize the casing for 2-5 days (until I see growth in the casing) then I will put them in a terranium with perlite, indirect light.and tri-daily fannings. More if needed.

Day 27 - Today I took the 6 jars that finished colonizing first and cased them in 50/50 mix.
Details:
My initial plan was to just cut the cakes in half vertically and put them in small loaf pans with the casing mix on top. I didn't want to crumble the cakes because I thought it would harm the fungus less if I just cut it in half. I was doing 1 cake casing. After doing 2 casings, I realized that the casing layers were not very level, so for the next 4 casings I crumbled the cake. The cakes were all fully colonized through the center of the cakes.
I covered the loaf pans with saran wrap and poked holes in it. Place the finished casing where the other 4 jars which were not cased at still incubating. I plan on putting the casings in the terrarium in about 2 days, or whenever I see some growth. At this time I will also put the 4 other substrate cakes which were not cased in a terrarium.
I will put more pictures up as soon as I see some pins.

Hi,
Youre operation sounds like it is going good. Have you thought about using a bubbler system to create humidity and to add fresh air to your terrarium. This way if you cant fan it then it will still be ok. What you need is two fish tank pumps and a couple bubbler stones. Just put two cups of water with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide in your terrarium and run the hoses from each pump into the cups with the bubbler stone on the end of the hoses in the cups. This is a good technique if you cant fan it all the time and the hydrogen peroxide in the water makes the air released by the pumps clean and fresh.
