Sadly for your friend, the driver is ultimately responsible for everything... legally, you owe nothing. Cosmicly, maybe throw him some cash if you can.

im sure it sucks but i dont see how you are liable for the damages. you gave an advice based on you seen other park there and never seen anything like this before. your friends got unlucky for parking the car on the same day the owner of the parkin lot or whatever decidet to clear it. it was no sign sayin no parking or anything, you shouldnt feel like this is your fault at all.

Something like this happened to me and a friend, I lived in a gated community and he came over, and there were lots of "resident parking
only" signs, but my dumb ass friend parked there anyway.

He got towed, so I took him to the impound lot, payed and told him the next time, I am out of the loop.

I believe a driver is responsible for his own car, and the decisions he makes.
