Zeppelin is cool. I like most of there music but I like the blues/rock part of there music more.

I was raised on zeppelin also and many other great bands.
Tull, dead, the doors and rolling stones just to name a few. My mother is a baby boomer.

I had the good fortune to see Led Zeppelin live in Montreal when they were touring for Led Zep II. I believe it was 1970.

Tremendous band, no doubt. If I had to choose just a single album of theirs, it would be II. If I had to choose just two albums, it would be I and II. I didn't care for every single cut on some of their later albums, but there was still so much good stuff on each album that the occasional mediocre cut didn't matter.

I saw The Who live as well, a few years later (in Toronto), when they were touring to promote Who's Next. It may surprise some of you to know that for a few years, The Who were considered the rock band of all rock bands -- bigger than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones... bigger than anyone. Tommy is still considered by music critics to be one of the most advanced rock albums ever produced, and when you compare its sophistication to anything else that was produced prior to the Seventies, it stands head and shoulders above everything else. I would say it wasn't surpassed until Dark Side of the Moon (which I also saw live during Floyd's promotional tour -- again in Montreal).

A few of my other favorite concerts from that era -- Hendrix at the old Capitol Theater in Ottawa in 1969, Jethro Tull in the Ottawa Civic Center (Thick as a Brick tour) in 1972, Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" tour (Ottawa, 1973 or 1974), Frank Zappa (Ottawa 1972 or 1973), Emerson Lake and Palmer (many times from 1970 on), Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elton John, Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, King Crimson (Lark's Tongues in Aspic), Supertramp, Yes....

I first saw Supertramp in a freaking high school gymnasium -- they were touring to promote their first album and played in Ottawa's High School of Commerce gym. Admission was two bucks Canadian. I saw Yes for the first time on a triple bill. They had just released their first -- The Yes Album. They were the warmup band and blew everyone away. At that time no one I knew had ever heard of them. The next act was Black Sabbath. Good, but a letdown after Yes. The headliner act was -- are you ready for this? -- Bloodrock. What a letdown. Still, the admission price for that concert was four bucks Canadian, so I was satisfied.

There were just so many excellent concerts to see from about 1969 to 1974 or so when Disco took over. In my opinion, music didn't recover till the late Eighties. Now it pretty much is going down the tubes again. Sure, there are the occasional flashes of brilliance these days, just as there were the occasional sparks in the mid Seventies to mid Eighties, but I fear the halcyon days of live concerts ended three decades ago.

Bummer.

Thank goodness for CDs and tapes and vinyl, though.

To be honest, there are a surprising number of bands that can't play live worth a shit. I've seen The Rolling Stones live a few times and in my opinion it wasn't worth the money. The sound quality at The Who concert was pretty shabby, too. Same with Bob Marley -- the distortion level was hideous. Sounded like a cheap car stereo cranked past the max. I enjoyed Marley anyway, but I'm just saying, is all. And I have to be honest and say that Hendrix's show at the Capitol Theater wasn't exceptional either. If it had been anyone other than Hendrix, he wouldn't have got away with it. Sloppy playing, distorted sound, slurred lyrics. It was genius, but flawed genius.

Also, I don't mean to say that there are no decent bands doing concerts these days. Some of them are superb -- Wide Mouth Mason, for example. It's just that there are a lot less of them then there used to be.

But to get back to the topic of this thread....

Led Zeppelin is definitely a classic. I used to tend bar at a beach bar here in the Dominican Republic. The bartenders were responsible not only for mixing the drinks, but also for spinning the tunes. It never ceased to amaze me how many people of all ages and nationalities -- from sixteen year old Dominicans raised on Reggae and Merengue to sixty year old Swedes -- would go apeshit whenever I'd put on a killer Led Zep tune and crank the volume. If I was ever at a loss for what to play next, I knew I couldn't go wrong with Led Zep.

I guess Tommy is too advanced for my ears. I get bored to tears when that thing is on.

Not every cut on Tommy is a winner, that's for sure. But Tommy is an opera. Like all operas, seeing the action adds to the music. Some of my favorite Who cuts are from Tommy, though -- Pinball Wizard, Sally Simpson, We're Not Gonna Take It.

Zeppelin I - Physical graffiti Are all my favorites. I can't pick one over another. Theres too much to like in all of them to have one favorite. Like on one hand I'll say I like zeppelin 4. I can't decide.

Alounacara... if I recall, you're still in your forties, right? You must have started going to concerts at a younger age than I did. When I was a young'un, I had almost no coin, so I missed a lot I wanted to see out of sheer poverty.

The thing that pisses me off the most was missing Woodstock. I could have gone, and would have gone if I had heard about it. Ottawa isn't that far from Woodstock. But I didn't even know it had occurred till weeks after it had happened. I wasn't real big on reading newspapers back then, and I didn't have a radio either. I barely even watched TV.

Ah, well. At least I didn't get rained on.
